How Gamestop Hit A New Low During the MW2 Launch

by Nov 17th 2009 9:00AM 47 Comments

I’m sure many of you out there have heard many stories about the recent launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. And it seems that lately it’s all about the mom and pop video game stores breaking street dates to stay competitive with the evil corporation that is GameStop. This story is about how one Gamestop store in NYC has stooped to new a despicable low and out of sheer jealousy decided to really hurt their local competition. It comes to us from Michael Hurdle and Corey Ashley, the hosts over at RawGamePlay, a public access video game news show from Brooklyn NY. Check out the video below to find out exactly what bastardly act it is that I’m talking about. It starts at right around 2:30 and get’s real down and dirty at around the 5:00 mark. Have a look and a listen, and let us know what you think. Have you heard about similar behavior from other Gamestop locations?

  • http://www.dualshockers.com Al Zamora

Wow! Gsmestop has grimy ninja agents looking to screw anyone who opposes them.

    Shout-out to the junction!!!

  • PJ

I disagree with these guys. I NEVER have to go to gamestop. I either buy games online from Amazon, or I go to Best Buy/Target/Wal Mart/Toys R Us, whoever has it in stock.

  • http://pixelatedsausage.com Robert

Umm, the mom and pop shots are breaking the rules. gamestop had every right to do what they did.
I worked for Blockbuster, and I know how this time of retail works. There are a reason for Release Dates.

It is so no one has an advantage in selling the product.

People make Gamestop evil. I love my local gamestop. And I buy from them more that any game store. GROW UP!!

  • EMac

So Gamestop is snitching? Snitches get stitches should be a national policy.

  • That_Whore

    @Robert

    STFU_GTFO!

  • Pete

I love these guys! They speak the truth. Screw you Gamestop, I don’t have a mom and pop store near me but I will go anywhere else for you not to have the money from my purchase.

  • Panic

Same thing happen in East Longmeadow, MA @ this Gamestop. I went there to cancel my reserve. The nerdy kid ask me why I returned it, I said I got it already and he was mad like he wanted to fight somebody. Kid was getting minimum wage and wanted to close the mom and pops stores asking where I got it. I said it doesn’t matter just give me my money. Damn I felt like beating his ass just to show why I would NEVER shop at GAMESTOP ever again.

  • selits

These guys are idiots… should gamestop “tell” on stores who sold early? meh who cares… the stores shouldn’t have sold the game early. Period.

8 minutes wasted cause they are mad at gamestop for respecting the release date of a game… sure, gamestop is evil… but you are stupid if you think its ok they are mad about stores releasing a product before they are supposed to… I hope all stores that did get blacklisted on top games.

  • BigM

Look, these mom and pop shops who released MW2 early aren’t the first public or known cases of early release of a game.

The fact that GS reported them isn’t that much of a big deal, it’s the fact of WHEN they decided to do it.

Go figure that when the most hyped game of the year releases, they pull some stunt like this.

GS knows what they did was evil, out of their area of concern, and just down right fighting dirty, and if you think they had every right, ask yourself this -

If they supported what they did, why didn’t they make this public? If it’s so right and lawful, why not explain these secret GS agents?

  • Izuna

    Briliant show, thank you!

Despite the fact that what Gamestop did was promoting the law, the Mom and Pop store did something for the consumers and Gamestop stopped them from doing it. I’m not a communist, but Gamestop, as a business, still shouldn’t try and get all of the money for themselves.

  • HAHA

Here is the number to the gamestop (718) 859-3029

  • cleft5

I think that the point that they where getting at is that the manager of that Gamestop did what he did not because someone else was breaking street date for the game but simply as a way of hurting their competitors. The truth is that this manager probably isn’t even going to get a promotion for his or her efforts and it was completely unnecessary. This store wasn’t selling so many copies of that game that it would have hurt Gamestop in anyway. And no one working at Gamestop has any invested interesting in selling as many copies of a game as possible because Gamestop does not typically reward that beware with promotions. In fact Gamestop uses fear tactics to punish their employees if a minimum number of pre-orders isn’t made. Fact is, that a week later when it was legal to sale copies of the game, Gamestop would have still sold out of MW2 because of all the pre-orders made.

The mom and pop store does not having the marketing of Gamestop, so by them selling the game early they where making cash that would have typically went to Gamestop. You might say that, well they are getting Gamestop’s customers so that hurts them, but the truth is Gamestop is a corporate giant and any business that the mom and pop store would have done in that week would not have dented their overall sales or profit margins.

With that said, the mom and pop store was breaking street date and they had to know that when they do something like that they run the risk of being blacklisted. While it is unfortunate that they got blacklisted, the only people they have to blame for this is themselves. That sounds cold, but when you take risks like this you all know that their could be repercussions.

Is it circle 2 at 86st?

  • http://UFrag.TV MuRRizzLe

    FLATBUSH!

  • http://UFrag.TV MuRRizzLe

Oh and I remember this same GameStop selling copies of Fable 2 and Fallout 3 early thanks to Bulletproof doing the same up the block :P

  • Jamie

wow – power to the players? screw gamestop…I order games online from Amazon. If I want to get used games, I use sites like SwitchGames or SwapTree…way more value for the dollar and not giving any money back to a greedy corporation.

  • http://www.dualshockers.com Al Zamora

@MuRRizle – nice call with Bulletproof, hadn’t heard that name in a while. LOL

  • Sanzee

-_- ughh, this article is so terrible, words cannot even express how let down I am.

  • Revolution

You don’t buy from Gamestop but buy from Amazon?

So you don’t like corporations, and go from the biggest videogame retailer un the US to the biggest all-in-one retailer in the WORLD?

Put your money where your mouth is and buy from local stores.

  • http://Youtube.com/l1games Gamer Muzz

I own and operate an independent game store. Been building it for the last 10 years. (I started with only 14 games) I work massive hours and strive to better serve the gamers and collectors in my community.
I’m glad to see you guys speaking up for me and all the others who are in the business.
    Good lookin out!!

    This fails…the article does.

  • Revolution

What people don’t realize is that if you don’t support local stores, they go away.

They may not have all those bells and whistles that the corporations have, but if you’re a gamer and build a relationship with them, it’s going to be more benefitial for both parties in the long run. I know it by experience.

Think of whatever you or your parents do for a living, and now think how would it be if people that use those services would go for big corporations or internet companies.

Gamestop, BestBuy or amazon will never put aside a game for you if you don’t pay. They won’t shave a couple of bucks off if you’re short. They won’t be tied to strict policies for sales/returns. At the end, they’re more prone to not give a crap about you than mom & pop’s stores.

  • Evan

I was an assistant manager at a Funcoland in Waldorf, Maryland and they did this exact trick to catch everyone including the big boys like Walmart, Target and 7-11. This, besides the HORRIBLE way they treat their managers and employees, is why I walked out taking almost the whole store with me one day. God I hate them

  • Tim Horvath

so i dont understand why people hate gamestop so much, there is so much ignorance in the hate about them, i am a former employee there and personally i do prefer a mom and pop shop on my nostalgic gaming shopping and even to pick up my games early, this tattle tailing by gamestop is old news, they have done this for years and years, but gamestop does have good deals on alot of used games and terrific and VERY sympathetic return policy on used games, they give you a 7 day return policy on all used games with NO questions asked and a full refund no matter the problem even if you did not like the game, they also are no different than any company on new return policies basically if you open it, its yours. and maybe people should inform themselves before they go and buy a brand new “Jumper” for 60 bucks.
    thanks for reading.

  • Nac

Didnt GS sell the game early too?

  • Gemer

Game Stop did the right thing, those guys broke the rules and they got burned too bad. Yay for Capitalism.

  • Mike

    F**K Game Stop!

I am also against Game Stop and have been for the last 10 years even before they took over EB Games I was like WTF!!! I hate Game Stop they suck and there managers are coporate whores!!

  • Mike

Game Stop 86th and Lex here in Manhattan SUCKS! They put my favorite EB Games store out when they bought them out!! Game Stop are not gamers!! I only buy from Ebay for my games USED and if I need it new I go to Best Buy!

Also a hard to find game store is this:

    Play N Trade‎ 137 E 13th St, New York, NY‎ – (212) 674-0200‎

Play N Trade is just as good or better then EB used to be! You can play the game there before you BUY IT!!

  • http://UFrag.TV MuRRizzLe

So according to the GameStop fanboys, since GameStop had an excuse to break street date we should support them…

That’s like saying Hitler was cool because he had a reason to kill the Jews.

My response to brainwashed Gamestop Employees… 8===========================D

  • name

i absolutely hate gamestop and everything they own.
there a complete utter rip off.
where i live in AU its called EB who is owned by gamestop.
i took in my 360 and put it towards a psp, its 4 months old, i payed 500 bucks for it 4 months ago.
guess how much they gave me.
    99 bucks.
yup thats right, my 360 depreciated 401 bucks in 4 months.
guess how much their charging for a preowned 360 just like mine.
    400 bucks.
thats a profit for them of 300 bucks, that enough for ya you greedy money grubbing SOBs?
    but thats not it.
i also traded in GTA liberty city stories, which i bought 3 days ago for 100 bucks.
guess how much they gave me for that.
    20 bucks.
guess how much their charging for it.
    90 bucks.
a profit for them of 70 bucks, that large enough for you, you greedy money grubbing SOBs?
oh but thats not enough either.
every single game they sell is minimum 20 bucks more expensive than JBHIFI every single one!
ps3 copies of released games like COD MW2, uncharted 2, R&C ACIT, assassins creed 2 are all 110 bucks at EB.
JBHIFI has them all for 90 bucks.
oh but thats still not enough.
sometimes when i get NEW games, there not new there old used ones they have used for themselves before release date.
like i got my copy of uncharted 2 and it was open, the manual slightly bent and the disk had scratches on it.
and they would not let me take it back for a new one.
thats why people hate gamestop, and thats why i will never, ever, ever be spending another cent there ever again and i will make sure everyone i know does the same.
to hell with these greedy money grubbing selfish SOBs.

  • Mark

    F**k Gamestop and Robert.

  • ThatzMyDawg

If you break the street date DONT BLAME GAMESTOP, Gamestop gets cru-ci-fied if one of thousands of stores gets caught breaking a streetdate but it’s ok for a mom&pop? Because there not a major corporation, Really? Did gamestop do the right thing, no. But they wern’t the ones breaking the rules.
BTW, I just traded ODST in to get MW2 and got $37.45 off (using discount card combined with some sort of promotion), where do these guys get $10-15. If your smart about how and when you trade games you will never pay more than half of full price for a game again. What was the mom&pop offering for your old games?

  • http://Myspace.com/xTr3ndS3ttax xTr3ndS3ttax

I love gamstop but sometimes I rather buy from amazon..

  • mastershredder

I’m not a big fan of what Gamestop has done to corporatize/monopolize walk-in retail gaming stores. The employees are either cool but repressed, know it all jerks/dorks, policy pushers, or just fanatical for either gaming or gamestop itself. Essentially, all the fat that they cut off from attending E3 ’09 (good riddance).

I still shop there if I need to get a hard to find title or have to hunt down an older title for study. (I use a lot of old titles for reference and some are hard to get a hold of in regular retail). So Gamestop still has relevance for me even though I am not to fond of having to go to their shops that usually have an odd odor to them (especially in the used game sections).

Breaking street dates it not cool. It is a legal matter. For anyone who works in the industry as a developer, publisher, marketer or retailer, you would know this as fact and have no sympathy for those who choose to beat others to the punch for sales or reputation. Gamestop did the right thing to report them. The method used to obtain this info/proof however was very lame (douche-like). At the same time, if you get your chops busted doing something wrong, it is your own damn fault. Although you might think it sucks or was unfair, all retailers are bound to contracts and agreements set by the publishers/companies that supply them. You break that and you loose credibility, loose relations with marketing and special marketing
promotions/perks, loose your distribution rights or worse, get taken to court.

  • http://dualshockers.com Roberto Bayde

    @mastershredder

i agree with you, street dates are a legal matter but you cant blame the mom and pop shops especially here in NY -__- lol

but i also agree with this…

“I still shop there if I need to get a hard to find title or have to hunt down an older title for study. (I use a lot of old titles for reference and some are hard to get a hold of in regular retail). So Gamestop still has relevance for me…”

  • mastershredder

    @ Robertro Bayde

Yeah I know a lot are struggling to keep alive what mom and pop game shops are all about. I’ve seen the NY scene and those stores are a world onto themselves (special). I’m moving to White Plains for a project in the upcomming month, It should be interesting to see east coast gaming culture again.

  • http://dualshockers.com Roberto Bayde

    @Mastershredder

Hopefully you can see the true underground east coast culture because it is something special

  • Jason

    broadway junction?

  • Jim Dawson

no one is above the law/rules; the mom and pop store deserves whatever punishment that comes its way, probably more.

  • Darren

LoL I live Around this area.F Game stop.

  • Mark

All you Gamestop banana riders know that they broke the street date to right?

No? Well now you do, STFU

  • Pedro

Awesome show, The gamestop in the JUNCTION! lol

  • Major_Newbie

So their complaint is that GameStop is too corporate with their approach to gaming and are only protecting their bottom line…

..and they go on to explain their beef is because they getter better trade in elsewhere? er.. isn’t that the same thing?

Heck if you get better trade in elsewhere, go with it. But don’t use that to defend mom and pop retailers who broke street date. If they get reported, then they shouldn’t have broken street date, it has nothing to do with trade in values.

This ‘gamers come together’ crap protecting these stores just because gamers want to get releases early is BS, “yo, yo”.

You know what you guys, the worst part about this is that GameStop was selling them early too. And they are playing games like this?
