Games get cancelled all the time. It’s always sad, but it definitely isn’t new or shocking. It isn’t all the time though that a game being developed by one of the most famous and influential game-makers in the industry gets the can. According to a tweet from Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, the project he’s been working on for the past year has become “Meaningless”. This strongly suggests that the project in question has been scrapped. Kojima later made another tweet, saying that he was so upset about the situation that he could no longer remain positive.
No information or hint was given about whatever he is referring to, but I’m pretty sure I know what he’s talking about. In September of last year, Kojima released a statement saying that he wanted to show a new game at the Tokyo Game Show this year. Before this, around July, he released a statement saying that he was creating a new game, and that it involved a rather “taboo” topic. He even went so far as to say that his failure on the game could result in his departure from the gaming industry. Another known fact about the supposed game is that it was a collaboration with 5pb games, or at least their CEO, Chiyomaru Shikura.
Now, here’s my theory. Whichever game Kojima was working on really did pertain to a strongly tabooed topic; my best guest would be religion or perhaps some sort of sexuality. He takes this game to his superiors or the head guys and they tell him “You’re insane, there is no way we’re okaying this.” and then they tell him to throw the game off a cliff. That brings us here, where it seems that the game he’s been building all this hype about has been shut down. Obviously, a good part of this is speculation, but since the solid details are so few, we’ll have to form our own conclusion. If you’ve got a better theory, I’d love to hear it.
