Seasonal Events in Final Fantasy XIV have always been rather lackluster, most of the times just involving people prompted to ring a bell and get materials to craft an item.
Now that the game is definitely picking up steam thanks to the injection of new content and several sweeping changes, it’s not surprising that even seasonal events are becoming more interesting and unique. On August the 11th at 1:00 AM PDT the Firefall Faire will begin, bringing summer to all the adventurers of Eorzea.
Players will be prompted to talk with a Faire chaperone, that will invite them to take part in the Bombard Hunt and give them a fireproof swimsuit. Then they will travel to one of the locations for the event, talk with another NPC and use emotes to trigger the spawn of bomb monsters that will have to be led to a festive furnace nearby and incinerated.
Once the Bombard is dead, the player will receive a pinch of ash of a random color, that will allow him to receive a firework of the corresponding color. Firing the firework at the mortar positioned in each city will grant another swimsuit of the same color.
But that’s not all. Upon collecting all the colors of the swimsuits (that happen to be quite on the sexy side for ladies), all players will be able to chose a background, a swimsuit color and a pose and the game’s official site will automatically generate a festive desktop wallpaper featuring their character.
I may be wrong, but it probably is the first time something like this is implemented in a MMORPG.
While the event doesn’t start before Thursday, you can already enjoy the lovely commemorative poster drawn by Akihiko Yoshida, in perfect 70’s B-movie style. FFXIV may have launched badly, but they sure don’t skimp on the art.
