Sega of America, Youth UpRising, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Oakland community, will be coming together to build a new playground for the children of East Oakland tomorrow on October 28, 2011. Better yet, the new playground will be Sonic themed. The new playground’s design will be based on drawings created by the children of the community center and it will be inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog, his 20th Anniversary and the release of Sonic Generations. The construction will take place all day and those in the area can see the volunteers building the new facility that will surely bring hours upon hours of joy to the youth of Oakland. Here’s an approximate breakdown of how the day will go:
9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Kick-off ceremony and volunteer deployment with Sonic the Hedgehog
Noon to 2:00 p.m. Playground construction taking place
2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Final construction phase and adjustments
3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate new play area with Sonic the Hedgehog
Expect to see about 200 volunteers working diligently throughout the day as they will be moving 39,204 square feet of safety surfacing, assembling brightly colored playground equipment and all the other things that it takes to put together a playground. This will all be happening at Youth UpRising 8711 MacArthur Blvd in Oakland, CA.
I’ve got to say, it is very uplifting to see videogames impacting lives and a generation.
