“Nude Females” is NOT the Most Popular Skyrim Mod

by on November 18, 2011 6:14 PM 46

Today I came across a news piece on GameZone claiming that “Nude Females” is the most popular mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

I fully expect gutter press and Fox News-like media outlets to try their hardest in order to paint gamers as sex-starved basement dwellers, but to see an actual gaming site using flawed data to fabricate a controversial headline aimed towards the same goal is a little disturbing.

The article claims that the “Nude Females” mod is the most popular between the community because it’s been downloaded on the Curse network 26,294 times (actually 29,316 times at the time of this writing), and that’s undoubtedly a whole lot of downlods, but as I hinted at above, the research behind it is fatally flawed.

The simple reason is that anyone that has the slightest knowledge and experience about the Skyrim modding community (or the Elder Scrolls modding community in general) knows that the place to go for mods is not Curse, but SkyrimNexus, the Skyrim-focused spinoff of the extremely popular TESNexus that played host to the largest part of the modding community through Morrowind and Oblivion.

Quite obviously that large part of the community didn’t suddenly move to Curse, but just shifted to SkyrimNexus. The numbers are undeniable: The same “Nude Females” mod on SkyrimNexus has been downloaded 71,658 times. Now That is a whole lot of downloads. It’s almost two and a half times those on Curse, making Curse’s numbers just a tad irrelevant.

Now, while that’s a very sizable number of downloads, is “Nude Females” the most popular? Not even close. The most popular Skyrim mod is “No More Blocky Faces” (That I already featured in my weekly “The Skyrim Mod Forge” column), with 123,790 downloads on SkyrimNexus. That’s more than enough to abundantly surpass the numbers of “Nude Females” on SkyrimNexus and Curse combined.

Mind you, “Nude Females” isn’t even the runner-up, as that spot belongs to “FXAA Post Process Injector” with 122,212 downloads on SkyrimNexus alone.

One could say that “No More Blocky Faces” is still a mod based on aesthetics, but it definitely doesn’t share the same goal (and looks a whole lot better). Turns out that the modding community of Skyrim and those that enjoy it aren’t nearly as sex-crazed as someone would like us to believe.

Since there was no “no blocky boobs” mod yet..so we prefer the “no blocky face” until then

      Lol, good one :D

    Well, interesting post, thanks!

  • SvenVDP

The author makes a fatal flaw too in his reasoning, however. To see what is the most ‘popular’ you need to look at the number of downloads *in any given timeframe*. So, you have to look at, say, a week’s time for both mods, and look at which performs ‘best’ (in downloads) to know how popular something is. For instance, hypothetically, if ‘the blocky faces’ has been there since 12/11 and the ‘nude female’ mod only there from  18/11, then NATURALLY the latter wouldn’t have gotten as much downloads then the first, while at the same time the numbers would indicate a HUGE popularity that dwarfs that of the ‘anti blocked faces’ mod.

‘Most popular’ thus, is about how much the fans crave a mod, not how many ‘total’ downloads something has without placing it in a timeframe. Especially in the beginning this makes a huge difference, though it will level out a bit during the months to come.

    • http://www.facebook.com/giuseppe.nelva Giuseppe Nelva

While you have a point, might have wanted to give a look to the upload dates for the mods before making an hypotetical argument. They are, in fact, publicly displayed on the pages I linked. There’s only one day of difference between the two, and considering that a week has passed, and there’s a 60k difference in downloads, we’re already past the moment in which it levels out. Wether you want to consider that day of difference or not, though, “nude females” is still not nearly the most popular as “FXAA Post Process Injector” has been downloaded one day after “Nude Female”, so it did a lot more downloads in a smaller timeframe.

Don’t worry, no fatal flaws here.

      • SvenVDP

Well, since I *was* talking hypothetically, I didn’t say you were wrong in the actual statement, only that there was a flaw in your reasoning. I suspect you didn’t check the timeframes until I pointed this out, for instance. At least, you ommited any reference to it, and only concentrated on the total numbers of downloads in your paragraph, to argument your conclusion, and it’s to this I objected because this is a fatal flaw to do so, at least in principle. Of course, it doesn’t mean your conclusion itself was unvalid, only the reaoning to come to that coànclusion was.

But anyway, as I said: it levels out in the long run. I don’t care one bit which mod is most popular, as long as it fits my needs or not. And personally, I always play TES-games completely vanilla first, before I use any mods, and even after 68 hours of play, I still have barely scratched the surface, so it’ll be a while beore I use any mods at all. But that’s personal taste. If people want to use anti-blocky faces or nude mods, they can do it, I don’t really care. Though in honesty, at least they should make it ‘nude’ for males too, to remain fair, then – especially if the argument would be that it’s to bring more realism in the game.

But, well… I think we all know the real reason. ;-)

But we digress. Point is, to actually know what is the most popular, you would want to set it in a reasonably long timeframe, so that the natural ‘skewing’ of the numbers because something was ‘first’, or because of the fact there already are 2 different nude mods (if you count both numbers up, is it still not more popular, for instance? Even though you can’t really count them up, because partly it will overlap by people who switched from one to the other), etc. gets a bit levelled out. One must be careful that one does not make the same mistake as the original article which claimed it was the most popular, when refuting said article.

        • SvenVDP

Correction, I read there are already 3 nude mods. As said, there might be a bit overlapping, but it’s also possible different persons would use different nude mods. While on the other hand, I guess there is only one ‘anti-block face’ mod? It’s difficult to guestimate this, but it is clear that, within a certain genre, one mod might get more downloads than 3 mods in another genre get (each on it’s own). This also, is a point to be recogned with. Still hypothetically, of course. ;-)

And I also found a mod that I am going to use straight away, namely ‘Light Skyrim Tools’. This is, because it doesn’t alter gameplay in the game itself, not even on the ‘cosmetics”-front, but it actually improves in Skyrim using the (hardware) capacities of your computer better. Especially the <2GB ram fix seems a valuable addition, potentially.

          • http://www.dualshockers.com Giuseppe Nelva

No, there’s not only one mod that softens the features of the face, actually there are several. Same as the FXAA mod: there’s a metric ton of mods with similar effects. Even if you count ALL the nude mods together (which would be a pretty weird way to put this), they still don’t even get near the most popular ones, even because while “nude females” isn’t exceptional, the others are absolutely crappy, and their downloads fail to go over 5k each.

          • http://www.facebook.com/giuseppe.nelva Giuseppe Nelva

Well, then one should count all similar mods together, I guess, to know what ‘genre’ mod is most popular. But anyway, the point is a bit moot. The principle of my argument stands, but I’m not saying you’re wrong in the actual claim itself (in this particular instance). I think I can agree with your former statement that ‘nude females’ will probably fade away once good ‘nude males&females’ are made…but I guess that’s true for all first gen mods. Anyway, people should use the mods they fancy. And there is no doubt many fancy nude mods too, even though it’s ‘only’ sixth ranked. However, as said, except for maybe the LAA, I’m first playing skyrim vanilla, because IMHO, you first need to play a game like it was intended, and later I’ll add aesthetic mods and mods that actually deal with things I find annoying (the UI could need some improvements on the PC, for instance, but the mods out now aren’t really what I’m looking for). And maybe much later some good quests. But everyone his own cup of tea.

          • http://www.facebook.com/giuseppe.nelva Giuseppe Nelva

The body mods I’m talking about aren’t simple nude mods. They’re a complete rebuilding of the body models made primarily because vanilla bodies suck, hard, not to remove the underwear. That’s why both versions with and without underwear are normally provided :D

Fact is that if you count all mods with similar effects, nude mods lose even more radically. They may be rather popular, but they’re not nearly the most popular :D

        • http://www.facebook.com/giuseppe.nelva Giuseppe Nelva

You’re right in the fact that I didn’t check the timeframes before. The reason for that is that I didn’t need to. I follow the skyrim mod scene extremely closely, being a modder myself and simply because I love the community (not to mention the fact that i hold a regular column on the subject). So I knew very well that the mods came out in a comparable time frame.

Mind you, I don’t even need to look at a long timeframe to know extremely well that “nude females” won’t ever be the most popular Skyrim mod. Simply because it’s destined to be forgotten quite soon, as soon as someone creates a fully new body model like the Eyecandy model for females and Robert’s body for males. They’ll come in both clothed and nude versions, and they will blow away the basic bethesda default bodies (clothed or modded to be naked) with no effort at all. When that’ll happen lower wuality nude mods like “nude females” will be completely forgotten.

It’s the same community as Oblivion and has largely the same audience. 99% it will produce pretty much the same results :D

The only real way to determine if something is popular is to actually ask people the question.  While downloads can be an indicator of the number of interested people initially it doesn’t represent the people who install the mod then uninstall it because it turned out they didn’t like it afterall.  I had that prolem wihen doing PC gaming.  A really cool MOD would come out but my PC couldn’t handle it so the framerate and what not would be choppy.  Sure it looked great in videos and pictures, but my PC couldn’t run it so I would never be a fan even if it was the most downloaded.

    • http://www.facebook.com/giuseppe.nelva Giuseppe Nelva

No more blocky faces gives no performance hit at all.

  • MoreFunForConsoles

Why can’t there  be mods for Consoles…they are equivalent to PC’s.  Some of the mods I would probable pay for…I just don’t want to buy a new computer with EVERY new game release!

    • Anonymous

Because Sony and Microsoft don’t allow it. Bethesda has said in the past they’d be open for it, but it’s on the console makers’ heads, not Bethesda’s.

So sick of uninformed people such as you spewing bullshit from the mouth ChadAwkerman…. Do a little research on Unreal Tournament 3, then remove Sony from your previous statement and then call Bethesda’s abilities into question and stop being such a blind PC/Bethesda fanboy >.>

        • Anonymous

Wow, that was highly uncalled for. Yes, change my entire statement around and you can bend it into anything you want! That’s so awesome, wish I would have thought of it, then I could have told you exactly what you wanted to hear.

I bow to your awesomeness, because you win the internets.

          • Kid

It is hardly just them disallowing though.

        • http://www.facebook.com/giuseppe.nelva Giuseppe Nelva

the mods of UT3 were extremely limited in scope, and that’s why they were possible to handle. What was available for Oblivion and will be available for Skyrim is simply on another planet in terms of scope and variety.

It’s not just a matter of possibility of injecting some user-created files into the game, but also of control and moderation.

because consoles are not equal to pc, dont get it wrong i still love my xbox but compared to my pc it is a joke. consoles are barely keeping ahead of my phone…

Could you imagine how amazing the graphics and gameplay would be if developers like Bethesda optimized their games for PC? Everything is optimized for consoles and while PC gamers do get the great benefit of modding, they usually only otherwise get improved graphics over consoles.

It’s not hard to imagine, or to see. That’s what the modding community does :D

Honestly I’m not sure that Bethesda would get better results. The reason for that is that Modders pour enormous amounts of passion and artistry in single, small aspects of the game, polishing them way past what an average developer would do. Put them all together and the results are amazing.

Consoles and PCs will never be the same consoles are cheap and crappy and will never look as good as a PC for games just have to spend more for a good PC. Mods will never work on a console they are for cheap people and console games are what you see is what you get for being CHEAP!

      • TheCheapGuy

Meh I’m just gonna download the PC version and get mods cause I’m cheap.

Saves me more money then getting a console version and dlc for it.

    • guest

Even if consoles had mods they would be limited to vanilla stuff.Imagine console users installing better graphics mods and then play the game, I can imagine consoles crashing and never turn on again. So you would never be able to install new meshes nor textures, all you could do would be making stuff with ingame stuff.

    • Kitty

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA as if they are equivalent to pcs

    • Darius2025

Why would you buy a new PC every new game? I’ve had my PC for over 3 years and it still plays all the newest games on max graphic settings with high FPS. Ah… but I guess you would have to learn how to use a computer properly first. Never mind… carry on.

Technically, if you look at File of the Month on the Nexus, Nude Females actually is in the number one spot based on votes.

My computer is from 2006 and i run this game on ultra, if your buying a new pc every GAME release your retarded.

  • Not Sex Crazed

If you think that modders should be able to play using whatever mods they want without ridiculous articles like this, why not head to the nexus and vote for this mod. It is already number 1, we might as well make it official to let people like the author know that it isn’t just for the “sex-crazed”.

    • http://www.facebook.com/giuseppe.nelva Giuseppe Nelva

That’s why I have a weekly column on Skyrim mods :D Next episode will be out tomorrow.

  • Gameboy6619

My first download for Skyrim was the nude mod, not because I am a sex-starved basement dweller, but because it pisses me off that prudes force the gaming industry to adopt ridiculous rules while trying its best to make a fantasy-based game as realistic as possible. I mean, the Elder Scrolls worlds keep getting more and more realistic looking. So it’s almost laughable that when you strip your foes of their armor, they are all wearing the same underwear underneath! HAHAHA–that’s ridiculous! Nude mod doesn’t do anything for me sexually, (honestly!!!) but it adds a realism to an awesome world and frees it from silly North American prudishness. Now when I strip dead female foes, I don’t have to stifle a sarcastic chuckle at their undergarments. However, the dead male characters still make me roll my eyes and give a sarcastic chuckle.

The bottom line is: I hate someone imposing their prudish standards on my entertainment. Yeah for the skyrim nude mod! Now I hope someone will make it equal opportunity, and yes, I am a straight male. It’s just all about realism.

  • Xscottr

Actually they fluctuate from being number 1 to about number 5 or six depending on the day. Get your facts straight. Too bad for all you anti-sex folks but they are popular and usually, depending on the time of day sit at number 1.

    • http://www.facebook.com/giuseppe.nelva Giuseppe Nelva

My facts are straight. The mod has never been number 1. The total number of downloads (or endorsements, whichever you prefer to use) can’t “fluctuate”. It can only increase. And there are a whole lot of mods that beat Nude females by a landslide.

Lol at “anti sex”. That’s a really neat joke :D
