During Nintendo’s investors briefing yesterday, president Satoru Iwata announced that there is a new Mario title in the works, surprising absolutely no one.
Along with a “strong lineup of titles” planned for this fiscal year, Iwata announced that the new Mario game will be a 2D side-scroller for the 3DS, surprising absolutely everyone. The new game, according to Iwata, is “a totally new side-scrolling action game,” and “a key title” for the 3DS this year. Rumor has it that Miyamoto lead the development team for this mysterious Mario 2D-but-3D Super Happy Fun Time Side-Scroller Land.
“With the fulfillment of software, we are confident that we will be able to make the Nintendo 3DS active for the full year as the mainstream platform in the video game market,” Iwata added.
Mario titles are Nintendo’s cash cow, with Super Mario 3DS moving 5.03 million copies and Mario Kart 7 4.54 million copies globally. Of course they’ve got another one coming down the pipe.
