Ben Kuchera of Penny Arcade sat with BioWare’s top dogs Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka for a chat about Star Wars: The Old Republic and the Mass Effect franchise.
The interview sheds some more light on the launch of BioWare’s MMORPG, that was compared to “making the largest Xbox game ever while making Xbox Live at the same time. And they both had to work flawlessly when you launch them on the first day.” It also gives a glimpse on the reasoning behind the launch during a rather unusual timeframe just before Christmas, that mirrored that of Baldur’s Gate, released on Dember the 21st, 1998. Zeschuk and Muzyka also shared that the average play session was six hours long at launch and is about four hours long now, which is quite flattering for a MMORPG.
The most interesting bit is probably the one about a possible Mass Effect MMORPG, that for sure is not a completely alien idea at BioWare and, according to the doctors, “It would lend itself to a different type of game play. It’s fun to think about.”
Of course they didn’t share if the “fun thoughts” will ever translate into reality, but the simple fact that they’re willing to speculate about it is quite telling, even if, for the moment, they have their MMORPG hands full with SWTOR.
