It has been three years since E3 2009 and the official announcement of Team Ico’s newest title, The Last Guardian. This game was announced as a third installment in a trilogy comprised of Ico (2001) and Shadow of the Colossus (2005). The Last Guardian and its predecessors have been hailed as primary examples of video games taking on more of an artistic direction, rather than simple entertainment.
Rumors began circulating that the project had been cancelled. This was initially fueled by Fumito Ueda’s (the game’s designer) recent departure from Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Team Ico, and the overall lack of information released to the public ever since the game’s announcement three years ago. The most recent rumor suggested that the game’s trademarks have been abandoned with, “no statement of use filed.”
Sony was quick to inform journalists that aside from the peculiar status of the game’s trademarks, they are still very much engrossed in developing the game, but have no new information to provide at this time.
