The Secret World Game Director Lays Down the Plans, Will Take a Page from TERA’s Action Combat

With the recent change at the helm The Secret World seems to be going towards a bright future, as today the new Game Director Joel Bylos posted an extensive “mission statement” to let us know about what the future of Funcom’s modern day MMORPG holds.

After releasing three sizable content updates in three months Funcom is already wrapping up issues #4, #5 and #6. The first, titled Big Trouble in the Big Apple will hit the servers in “not too long” and will include the already announced raid (that will be heavily story-driven and won’t include the usual army of trash mobs that make raids so damn boring on the long run), the Chainsaw as the second auxiliary weapon, and the Albion Theatre in london  for the RP community to enjoy.

It will also include a very welcome and surprising feature in the form of reticule combat (TSW‘s own version of TERA‘s action battles in which you have to actually aim at the mobs like in a third person shooter), that sounds very appropriate considering how many actual firearms the game packs. Players will be able to freely switch between the two combat systems whenever they like.

Next year will see the start of the second season with the introduction of Tokyo, that Bylos defines as “a major new region that brings with it new monsters, myths and legends to the game.”

The engine behind the game will be revamped with an entirely new animation backend to make animations more fluid and natural, while the team will also be revising the current animations to make sure all are up to snuff.

Finally the conflict between the secret societies will be brought to the forefront both in PvP and PvE, while “puzzle raids” (group-oriented investigative missions) will also be implemented.

That sure is a lot of exciting stuff to take in. As a current player I can’t say I’m not excited. You can find the whole post here if you want to read it directly from the mouth of the lion.
