Miyamoto: “NFC Feature in Games Will be a Priority for Nintendo”

If you can recall back to E3 2011, during the unveiling of the Wii U, one of the features of the gamepad was the ability to tap physical items on top of its Near Field Communication (NFC) sensor that would affect the gameplay shown. It’s a feature that has yet to make its presence felt since the Wii U has shipped. Something that will soon change.

Speaking with Polygon, Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that moving forward, using the NFC feature in games will be a priority for Nintendo. Citing that it’s “a feature that everyone that owns a Wii U can take advantage of.”

“That’s what we’re putting our priorities right now. We’re hoping that in the near future we’ll be able to show you something that will take advantage of the NFC on Wii U and people will be able to enjoy that” Miyamoto added.

NFC tech is already being used with the popular Skylanders series and will be used with Disney Infinity when it launches later in the year. Both games use NFC enabled “portals” to zap the characters into the game. With the Wii U, Nintendo is hoping they can use the tech to make many games on the console capture a similar experience.
