Basically everyone knows, by now, that Star Wars: The Old Republic has gone free to play (or more precisely has adopted a hybrid business model) a few months ago. What we still didn’t know is if BioWare deemed the operation a success, until now.
Today Executive Producer Jeff Hickman published a new developer blog in which he answers exactly that question, and the answer is positive, with the new high-capacity servers deemed “teeming with people”. Since the launch of the new business model the game has accumulated two million new accounts and has “thousands of new players jumping in every single day”.
Last time I logged into the game I could quite easily see what Hickman is saying. While the quality of the new community can be a tad hit and miss, quantity is definitely very visible, so calling the operation a success isn’t really far fetched.
That’s quite nice to hear about a game that was defined a failure by many, despite the high quality of most of its elements. I may have some personal reservations on its approach to this business models, as I said quite a few times, but it’s great to see the efforts of the development team rewarded.
