Dragon’s Crown Gets North American Box Art, Artbook Available with Preorders

A few days ago we saw the Japanese box art and official artbook for Vanillaware’s Dragon’s Crown, and many wondered if the box would look the same in the west, or if we’d ever be able to get our greedy paws on the artbook on this side of the Pacific ocean.

The answer is “yes” to both questions.

Atlus USA just sent a press release showing off the North American box art for the game (for both the PS3 and the PS Vita). In addition to that, those that preorder the game will also get the limited edition soft-cover art book.

The artbook includes 64 pages of full-color illustrations from Dragon’s Crown and comments from George Kamitani himself. It also comes with commissioned artwork about the Dragon’s Crown universe from three prominent Japanese video game artists: Akira “Akiman” Yasuda (Street Fighter II and III, Power Stone, Tech Romancer, and Mecha Designer for the Code Geass anime series), Kinu Nishimura (Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward, Code of Princess, Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom), and “Gouda Cheese” Bengus (Street Fighter series, Marvel vs Capcom 3 and many others).

Personally I’m very happy to hear that we’ll be able to enjoy the artbook with Kamitani-san’s artwork in the west. While a few irrational pundits definitely love to hate it, it deserves this treatment due to the fantastic use of color and the original style.

I’m even happier to see that Atlus didn’t cave to the pressure of the media and didn’t give up publishing the artbook as many feared they would. Creative freedom and artistic diversity should always be cherished and protected.

In the gallery below you can see both box art mock-ups and the cover of the artbook itself.

  • is this included in the Gamestop Pre-Order.

    • I already have my game pre-ordered at Gamestop along with “Tales of Xillia Collector’s Edition”.

    • The press release doesn’t specify any retailer, so I’m going to assume it’s included with all preorders. May want to check with Gamestop for added safety though.

Exact wording was: “Brave adventurers who pre-order the 2D multiplayer hack-and-slash beat ’em up will also receive the Dragon’s Crown Artworks: a limited edition soft-cover art book.”

I have played Guardian Heroes but not Code of Princess. I wonder if Dragon’s Crown is better than GH or CoP.

    • Unfortunately it’s hard to say with just the footage we have so far. Those that got their hands on a preview copy say it’s really good, but we’ll have to wait and see.

      It sure looks better 😀

Where is the thief, will he be dlc?

    • The thief is not a playable character. He’s an NPC companion.
