A few days ago Square Enix teased an “epic” E3 trailer for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, and today we finally get to see it in all its glory. The title of the trailer is a very appropriate “Crystal’s Call“.
I expected something pretty epic indeed, as Square Enix is known for not joking around with trailers, but I have to say that this one goes beyond my expectations, pulling all the right heart strings for an old dog like me that played Final Fantasy XIV since its extremely rocky launch back in 2010 and saw it to its end (that was already quite epic in itself).
Contrary to what many thought, the trailer is entirely made of gameplay footage instead of CG, and fully showcases the power of the new engine at the heart of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.
As an interesting piece of trivia, the final mix for the soundtrack of the trailer was handled by Soundelux’s Scott Martin Gershin (pictured below), that worked on many big Hollywood flicks like Gladiator, Riddick, Kill Bill, and Glory, several blockbuster games like Gears of War 2, Bayonetta, Fable 2 and Devil May Cry (the original one, not the sad, sad reboot), not to mention Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn‘s trailer A New Beginning.
In addition to the trailer, Square Enix also announced with a related press release that the PS4 version Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn won’t make it in time for the console’s launch window and will be published in 2014. According to the release, the publisher is “currently in talks with Sony Computer Entertainment to ensure that players who purchase the PlayStation 3 version of the game will be able to smoothly transition their game accounts to the PS4 version upon its release”.
Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida accompanied the announcement with a statement:
“The heart of everything we’re working towards is enabling players and their friends to experience their own rich Final Fantasy adventure. The deeply integrated social capabilities of the PS4 will make it a natural home for FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn. The team and I are thrilled to continue our adventure on the next generation gaming platform, and we hope that you’ll join us!”
Without further ado, enjoy the trailer below (As a bonus I also added the Japanese version, for those that love Japanese voice acting). The reborn Eorzea awaits, and if you haven’t played the first game but you’re preparing to join for A Realm Reborn, you may want to check out the eight chapters of my “The Story So Far” story recap column. They will get you up to speed with the storyline and give you a chance to learn who the relevant characters included in the trailer are.
