The first week after the fateful E3 press conferences is now behind us. Shots were fired and returned, and preorders for both the PS4 and the Xbox One are open in many countries.
Who is faring better so far? We set out to search the top sellers and preorders lists of the most popular online retailers in quite a few of the countries where the two consoles will be available at launch.
Counting the retailers in which both consoles were ranked, PS4 is very solidly in the lead with thirteen retailers against four that seem to be Xbox One strongholds. In addition to that, PS4 seems to have surprisingly achieved almost total domination in the North American online market.
Looking at the preorders of games and controllers (that are often another good indication of a console’s success), the PS4 dominates again basically across the board.
Of course it’s still way too early to declare a winner of the upcoming console war, but the initial reaction of the market is rather overwhelmingly in favor of Sony’s console, determining a situation in which Microsoft seems to have to face an uphill battle. They definitely have ways to recover (as I explained in a previous article), but they’ll possibly have to swallow some pride and adjust, unless they’re just planning to try to elbow their way through with the sheer power of their ponderous marketing machine.
It also has to be said that what we’re seeing now is the result of the purchasing trends between early adopters, that want a console at launch or as soon as possible afterwards. That group includes a large percentage of core gamers that are the most sensitive to the news that came from E3, while Xbox One seems to be targeted towards a more casual crowd.
The war has just started, but you can see the results of the first battle below and draw your own conclusions.
The Xbox One Controller is ranked 24th, while the first game for PS4 (Watch_Dogs) is ranked 11th. The most popular game for Xbox One (Forza Motorsport 5 Day One Edition) is ranked 22nd behind three more PS4 games.
The first PS4 game (Call of Duty: Ghosts) is ranked 13th, while its Xbox One equivalent is ranked 15th. The Xbox One controller is fifteen positions below the PS4 one, ranked 21st.
Strangely enough, the DualShock 4 is not ranked.
The DualShock 4 is ranked 11th, while the Xbox One controller is ranked 24th. The Most popular Xbox One game is Call of Duty: Ghosts ranked 25th.
No PS4/Xbox One games are ranked yet.

PS4 in in the lead here, ranked 3rd, against Xbox One ranked 21st (4th and 5th if you count only preorders). PS4 also wins for games in the preorder list, with Call of Duty: Ghosts ranked 36th against the Xbox One version that lags ten positions behind.
The first Xbox One game is Forza Motorsport 5, ranked 56th, while the Xbox One controlled is even more outclassed, ranked 151th.
On GameStop Germany (after sorting the list) Xbox One actually beats PS4. Ranked 1st against 3rd. PS4 has the best ranked game, with the Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Buccaneer Edition in 20th. The Best ranked Xbox One game is Forza Motorsport 5, ranked 28th.
The best ranked Xbox Game is Forza Motorsport 5 (ranked 44th), while the Xbox One controller way down the list in 111th position.
PS4 (ranked 1st) soundly beats Xbox one, that barely makes the top 10. The first PS4 game is FIFA 14 (ranked 20th), while Forza Motorsport 5 leads the charge for Xbox One games, but hangs back at a rather humiliating 357th place. The DualShock 4 doesn’t fare too well, ranked 103rd, while the Xbox One controller doesn’t seem to be available at all.
Again GameStop seems to favor Xbox One, at least for consoles, with Microsoft’s SKU ranked first between preorders and the PS4 ranked 3rd. PS4 and Xbox One games aren’t ranked at all.
Amazon.ca has Xbox One inching over the PS4, even if the PS4 wins in the controller battle. Forza Motorsport 5 is ranked 11th, while no PS4 games are ranked at all.
The PS4 is ranked 1st, while The Xbox One is ranked 3st. The first PS4 game is Battlefield 4 (ranked 12th), while its Xbox One equivalent is ranked 28th (Editor’s note: Thanks Devlar for noticing the mistake here).
The PS4 overpowers the Xbox one by quite a lot, ranked 1st against 8th. The DualShock 4 is ranked 17th against a poorly ranked Xbox One Controller in 135th place. The best ranked PS4 game is Watch_Dogs in position 29, while the usual Forza 5 leads for Xbox One games in 62nd position. So much for Italians loving cars (well..I do).
After Sorting the list for preorders, PS4 was in 5th position while Xbox One was not ranked. No games or accessories for the two consoles were ranked as well.
PS4 inches a victory on Australia’s biggest retailer ranked 1st against Xbox One’s second place. The DualShock 4 is ranked 13th and beats the Xbox One controller (ranked 26th) much more solidly. Xbox One wins for games, though, with Call of Duty: Ghosts ranked 30th. The same title leads the charge for PS4, ranked 36th.
PS4 leads solidly here, ranked 1st against Xbox One’s 5th position. The DualShock 4 makes the bottom of the top ten while the Xbox One controller is in 97th place. Killzone: Shadow Fall (ranked 21st) brings home a victory for PlayStation team against Halo (ranked 38th).
Disclaimer: the full top ten has been reported for each retailer only when a sizable number of products in it were related to either the PS4 or the Xbox One. When only the two consoles appeared in the top 10, it’s been replaced by a blurb to avoid clutter. All lists have been last checked on June 16th, 10:20 EST, and they’re subject to change over time.
