Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Open Beta Starts with Overwhelming Load and a Challenge (UPDATED)

by on August 16, 2013 11:13 AM 8

Today at 2 AM Pacific time the open beta of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn started, at least for those that fulfilled one of more of the conditions for early entrance to the testing listed below.

Update 2: as of August the 17th the open beta is finally open to everyone. Read how to register and download the client for both PC and PS3 here.

  • Played Version 1.0
  • Legacy Campaign members
  • Registered a Beta Test registration code by Tuesday, July 30, 2013 9:59 p.m. (PDT) / Wednesday, July 31, 2013 4:59 a.m. (GMT)
  • Received a PlayStation 3 promotion code in the days before the start of Beta 4 testing

If you didn’t fulfill any of those conditions, you’ll have to wait for tomorrow at 2 AM Pacific time for the floodgates to open for you.

The testing started with the servers being hammered by an overwhelming number of login attempts. According to the game’s official twitter account “well over 100,000″ users were expected to login at the same time, and indeed they did, bringing down the test forums first, and then putting the login servers under serious load.

At the moment logins seem to be going smoothly enough, but character creation on certain servers is being throttled in order to avoid further troubles. If your server of choice is affected, you’ll need to wait for it to open again or choose another. The official Twitter account is providing up to date information on the servers that open and close (even if the Japanese account seems to have more updated information).

Update: Square Enix just advised that restrictions on character creation have been lifted, but could be re-enacted if the situation worsens. Better get to creating those characters while you can.

On the other hand, Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida posted a new Letter from the Producer to kick off the open beta issuing a small challenge:

I wonder how many people will be able to clear the Binding Coil of Bahamut before the 2.1 Patch? Well, even if it proves to be an insurmountable challenge to most, as the game is updated with new battles, the older ones will be toned down a bit, so there’s no need to worry.

Challenge accepted, Yoshida-san!

The Binding Coil of Bahamuth is the highest level and most challenging piece of content implemented in the game at launch, and Yoshida-san mentioned several times that it’ll be extremely challenging (you can see a fresh screenshot posted today at the bottom of the post). Luckily, as you can read in the quote above, the level of difficulty will be toned down a bit as new dungeons are introduced. Personally, I know I’m not going to wait for that.

If you still need to download and update your PC client for tomorrow’s opening of the floodgates, you can find the installer here in order to prepare ahead of time. For the PS3 version you’ll have to wait for instructions that will presumably be provided when the beta registration site will reopen presumably tomorrow, since you need a code to download the client from the PSN.

If your server of choice is closed to character creation, and you didn’t play the original Final Fantasy XIV, or if you simply want to refresh your memory of the story, you may want to ease your wait by checking out the eight episodes of my The Story So Far column.  They will give you a nice overview on what happened during the first game, including all the relevant cutscenes. Since the story of A Realm Reborn is a direct sequel, reading on what happened before will help you enjoy it better.

The open beta will close on Monday at 2 AM Pacific time, and will be followed by early access for those that preordered the game and Legacy members on August the 24th. The game will finally launch on August the 27th.

Whether you’re a new player or a returning veteran, welcome to Eorzea, or welcome back! If you happen to roll on Balmung and find Abriael Rosen, do say hello. That would be me.

I’m bummed out I can’t make a character on Excalibur. That pretty much means I’m not playing the beta until I can… =
