Gamescom 2013 Interview: Naoki Yoshida Discusses the Future of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is only a few days away, and for those that will be able to partake in the early access phase, the floodgates will open as soon as tomorrow.

DSCN0423aBut if you can’t wait, we have a treat for you. At Gamescom in Cologne I had the chance to have a long chat with Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida about his vision for the present, and more importantly the future of the game. You can enjoy it directly from my point of view in the two videos at the bottom of the post.

Unfortunately I have to apologize for the abundant background noise. Square Enix was holding interviews in the Koch Media stand, and the good folks at Koch had the awesome idea of feeding the whole press and business population of the event with a rich bar service.

The result was predictably the presence of a hungry horde on site at all times and noise all over the place. Luckily Yoshida and his courteous translator are still clearly audible. I also have to apologize for my thick Italian accent. If you follow our weekly podcast you’re already used to how I victimize the English language. If you aren’t, I’m sorry.

Without further ado, let’s let Yoshida-san himself do the talking.

I just want to thank you for your continued coverage of this game. All of your articles have been great and this interview was great as well. You touched on a lot of things behind the scenes of the game that were interesting.

    • Giuseppe Nelva

I’m always glad to be of service 😀

  • Carlo

Completely agree with Jonno’s remarks. Thanks Guiseppe you have satisfied our thirst for every nibble of information. On a note though on the 2nd question Yoshi completely understood the question and started laughing before even the translator spoke. Shows he knows english well saw it at e3 too

Oh man, you have no idea the live action one that everyone in the forum is talking about. It’s a disappointment for some and for others find it ok.

Personally, I think SE could’ve done better. The commercials for the JP audience are superior in quality.

See the link below to see what ppl are saying about the live action commercial that aired in the syfy channel.!

Funky the ad for the video when I clicked it was D3. On a side note is that the official forums? (It kinda looks like it how come I never heard of it ._. But the video wasn’t so bad it gave me a bit of goosebumps wish when they we’re “transforming” They completely became their avatar and not stay human form if you will. Just my 2 cents.

It’s also my impression that Yoshida-san understands English quite well. It was obvious that he had at least the gist of what I was asking before the translation.

But the translator is still indispensible because it minimizes the possibility of misunderstandings (after all my English pronunciation is probably worse than Yoshi’s lol), and it also gives Yoshi plenty time to think about the answer 😀

I was happy you pushed for the question regarding the difficulty in the 2 end game dungeons (Bindings of Bahamut was it?) It should alleviate some fears of people who think the end game will be a walk in the park like the earlier levels. Great interview hope you keep covering ARR for us who thirst for everything about it 😉

Yoshi-P said he’s been learning English since he took over XIV so he could read the NA/EU forums feedback and such, he says although people think the NA threads are terrible, we give a lot more feedback and have a lot more mmo experience, and he likes reading those sort of posts. I’ve definitely noticed since the E3 live letter that he understands more English. I’m proud, I know how hard it is to learn a language in adulthood, as I’m now learning Japanese :]

I love Yoshida-san’s response that the fans do not owe Wada-san any thanks for allowing the creation of this game because he shouldn’t have allowed the release of 1.0 to begin with. It truly speaks of Yoshida-san’s genuine love of the fans who play their games.

    • Giuseppe Nelva

On that question there was a slight misunderstanding (mostly due to my faulty English :D), as with “Thank him” i mostly meant that he had a sizable part in supporting and pushing ARR, so I think that should be recognized as a merit.

I didn’t mean we should be “thankful” in a literal sense (even if I am, at least to a certain extent). Though the humble and down to earth response from Yoshida-san really impressed me 😀

      • notcarolkaye

Well, I’m thankful. It’s tough to admit that you’ve screwed up. He voluntarily endured embarrassment in order to do the right thing, and because of that we now have this great game to play.

  • Gorge

  • Robert

I really enjoy how humble he is and how he genuinely appreciates the player base. Really good interview, thanks for this!

I’m very touched by Yoshida-san’s understanding of the English words and his ability to speak my native language. It stirs a very special feeling deep inside me to just here the words from him in English. I now only wish he would speak more of it especially during letters from the producer live where we see the most of him. Thank You for this interview.

  • Quincy

You sly dog interviewing the one and only Yoshi P. Good job! bit offtopic: translator is kinda kawaii 🙂

  • garotte14

Yoshida is a very respectable person, and if I could I would buy this game 10 times to show my support for the entire team for doing what they did. This is truly a historical event in gaming history IMO, and I wish people were more like Yoshida. Very humble and caring truly about the fans. Bravo!
