PlayStation Games Dominate Last Week’s Sales in Japan According to Major Retailer’s Charts

by on September 2, 2013 12:35 AM 13

During the last few weeks the Japanese video game market had a period of domination by 3DS games, while the week August the 19th and August the 25th was more mixed, with strong sales of a couple PS3 and PS Vita titles. Last week seems to mark the a turning of the wind in favor of PlayStation games according to major retailer and rental chain Tsutaya’s weekly sales chart for the period between August the 26th and September the 1st.

It’s worth mentioning that the sales charts by Tsutaya aren’t as precise as the Media Create sales charts released each Wednesday, but they’re released earlier and they’re considered by most a good indication of what the Media Create charts will look like, since Tsutaya has a very high number of stores spread across the whole country.

Here’s last week’s top 20 (new titles are bolded):

  1. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle – PS3
  2. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn – PS3
  3. Ragnarok Odyssey ACE – PS Vita
  4. Lost Planet 3 – PS3
  5. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle (Limited Edition) - PS3
  6. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Collector’s Edition) – PS3
  7. Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life – 3DS
  8. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team – 3DS
  9. Youkai Watch – 3DS
  10. Conception 2 – PS Vita
  11. Super Robot Wars OG Saga: Maso Kishin III: Pride of Justice - PS3
  12. Tomodachi Collection: New Life – 3DS
  13. Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 3DS
  14. Saki Achiga-hen episode of side-A Portable - PSP
  15. Fantasy Life Link! – 3DS
  16. Earth Defense Force 4 – PS3
  17. Super Robot Wars OG Saga: Maso Kishin III: Pride of Justice - PS Vita
  18. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies – 3DS
  19. Pikmin 3 – Wii U
  20. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc - PSP

The first evident piece of data is the strong debut of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, that take four spots in the top six by themselves with their standard and collector’s editions for PS3. Of course Final Fantasy XIV also released on PC, and Japanese sales charts don’t track PC (or digital) sales, so it’s safe to assume that its result is even better than what’s shown here, especially considering the record breaking number of concurrent connections.

Ragnarok Odyssey Ace also starts strong, which is somewhat surprising since it’s basically an upgraded remake of a game already released a while ago.

While 3DS games have to take a backseat to PlayStation newcomers, it’s hard not to notice that the biggest sellers for Nintendo’s portable have a lot of staying power, retaining quite decent positions in the charts despite having been on sale several weeks already.

Things aren’t going as well on the Wii U side of things, and while Pikmin 3 still sells (but not much), Platinum Games’ The Wonderful 101 has been completely wiped off the top 20 after its rather unimpressive debut.

Was RO:ACE the only new Vita game for Japan this week?

Nice to see JoJo and FF14 doing well.

    • Giuseppe Nelva

yeah it was the only new one for the Vita.

  • z_merquise

Nice! Other than the game looked really cool, JoJo is really popular in Japan so I can really see JoJo: All Star Battle doing well.

So sad to see Wonderful 101 to disappear in the charts. I just hope it do well outside Japan then.

    • Giuseppe Nelva

Me too. I don’t count on it though.

This isn’t Media Charts or Famitsu, so we aren’t aware of how many copies are being sold this week and TW101 may have legs yet.

  • Splintee

Ohhhh happy to see Danganronpa in there XD

    • Erik Jacobs

Yep. Hope that the vita release for next year will do well in the west. Allthough i do have my doubts, as it is not that well known here. It’s one of the best games i’ve played recently. ( with the english patch for psp )

Zelda, and Sonic are coming for Wii U so that should help a bit. And while i bet these numbers are ok, we all know Monster Hunter 4 and Pokemon X and Y are going to smash any of the games listed here in a couple weeks.

JoJo in the western market when?

    • Erik Jacobs

From what I’ve read on different forums is that you can forget about it. Something to do with legal issues and music soundtracks, etc, etc. Since it is a fighting game which can be mastered without profound knowledge of Japanese, importing it might be an option.

Many of the Stands are named after bands, so that’s probably it. Really unfortunate.

I really wish they would cut the price of the PS3. It still a bit expensive in where I live…..

  • ifniarcnum

So conception continues on the top 10 and the second best selling vita game that only lost to a new release? nice.
