Final Fantasy XIV PS3 Players Will Upgrade to PS4 Version for Free, PS4 Beta Starting in February

by on September 9, 2013 5:17 AM 15

Square Enix just made a rather groundbreaking announcement that affects those that purchased the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and plan to upgrade to the PS4 version when it’ll be released.

According to the announcement, PS3 players will be able to upgrade to the PS4 version for free, effectively removing the need to purchase the game for the new platform. Unfortunately this doesn’t seem to include those that purchased the PC version of the game.

I know many that were holding out on purchasing the PS3 version in order to wait for the PS4 version, but now there’s no more reason to wait.

In addition to this, the beta of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will begin on the same day of the Japanese launch of the PS4 in Japan, on February the 22nd, 2014.

More details are expected to be disclosed soon, as Square Enix strengthens its server structure and equipment in order to be ready for the PS4 release of the game.

so how will it work if i have physical copy ?

    • Red Nation

I have a feeling this might only work for digital version. If you like a physical copy you might be screwed. We’ll have to wait and see for more details.

The feeling is pretty unwarranted. The game is connected to both your SE and your PSN account wether you have a digital or a physical version, so the theory that it works only with digital version is VERY unlikely, especially since they specified no version in the announcement.

They’re sure not going to send you a disk of the PS4 version, but you’re gonna get the digital version of that pretty much for sure.

That was exactly I was explaining him about. You just worded it better since this is your field and I’m just a regular reader and yet for some reason some people downvoted me for something they thought I was hating.

And by the way, I never said it only works for digital only. He was asking for physical copy and I answered him about physical copy. We all know how accounts works and I’m not stupid not to know its account based. Come on now…

i bought the physical disc and it comes with a redeem code to buy it from the store. you can’t play from the disc, that is silly and heso would know this if he had actually bought it. the only thing you can do with the disc is install the same game you would buy off psn,the disc just allows you install without having to wait on it to download first,it’s the same file as the beta too. so no worries about buying the disc, there is no difference between that and digital.

Square quit holding out on us and give us a Wii U version!

I don’t think that’s up to Square Enix entirely.

Game Developers see opportunities in new markets. If Nintendo opens their arms to Square Enix and says “here’s a contract, we promise to give you X amount of money to develop your game for us”, Square Enix can do that if they feel there’s enough to be earned and if it’s possible to bring the game to Wii U (make it stable enough).

But I think they won’t because Nintendo wouldn’t risk itself to be compared with the PS3, a console from an generation before. Do you think the Wii U can handle 30fps at 720p, maybe so. But not a PS4/PC level at 60fps 1080p. It just can’t. Lots of people would complain. “Wii U cant handle it properly, Square Enix gave us a shitty port, don’t get the Wii U version”.

It’d compete against PS3, PS4 and PC in graphics and performance. In all these the Wii U falls flat. If the dedicated FF14 will play the game, they’ll find a way to do it on another console. No need for annoying port development process to a whole new console, no need for promotion and advertising, no need for expensive pre-release contracts for NIntendo. It’s not gonna happen unless someone dishes out a lot of money, and they won’t do that if they don’t see a market on the Wii U for FF14.

Nintendo did not meet sales expectations with the Wii U, their president had to apologize for lack of software just recently, they’re still firmly against most things western, they are not looking forward for 3rd party offers and a lot of reputable 3rd party developers are not offering support for the Wii U. Way too risky, not enough Wii U consoles sold to meet software sales expectations.
