TGS 2013: Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida Talks The Last Guardian: “Production is Continuing, Please Feel at Ease”

by on September 21, 2013 7:10 AM 9

Many have been wondering about the fate of the PS3 title The Last Guardian. Has it been canceled? Converted to a PS4 title? Or maybe production is continuing normally but just slowly? Today SCE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida cleared the doubts about the game (at least partly) in an interview on Famitsu.com.

At the moment the Japan Studio has reached an amount of people and resources allowing us to work on the titles we want to make: Gravity Rush by Toyama (Keiichiro), Puppeteer by Gavin (Moore), and of course The Last Guardian by Ueda (Fumito). Even if priority has been given to the development of Knack and Puppeteer you don’t need to worry. Please feel at ease, because production of The Last Guardian is continuing.

However, since at this stage we cannot give further updated information, we will introduce it once again when we’ll be able to communicate that information with confidence.

So there you have it, nothing has changed and the game is still in production. When will we hear more about it? That we don’t yet know, but we will, and that’s all that matters, isn’t it?

My enthusiasm for this game is all dried up. At this point any and all news does nothing to alter my disinterest. If and when they have something tangible to show down the line my outlook may change. I would have been content to let this game disappear into The aether.

And yet, I hang on to every last rumor, no matter how insignificant, because I’d hate to invest years of interest only to abandon my faith in the final home stretch. I committed to TLG years ago and after ICO, and SotC, I have no problem waiting in anticipation for the next masterpiece.

The old saying was “Rome wasn’t built in a day” but perhaps, upon release, we’ll change it to “TLG wasn’t coded in a year….” but the saying will hold the same meaning.

Well, I’ve moved on. I really wanted this game but years of disappointment and no tangible indications of active development lead me to give up the ghost. I must commend you for maintaining your level of enthusiasm and interest.

Shuhei doesn’t go on record for nothing, history has proven.
We shall revisit this conversation in June 2014 I guess, during the next E3. Perhaps we will both have a reason to be excited, till then, there will be much to enjoy for us PS3 and PS4 owners.

More excitedly, perhaps we will see a rebranding of the game similar to what happened to Versus XIII. They keep saying the “re-introduction” of TLG, which makes me think we will see a whole new title out of Japan Studio and Ueda.
