Today Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida made a statement about the upcoming server transfers that will soon (within the first half of the month) be available to players.
Server transfers are being made available in order to help players that could not join the server they wanted, or their friends, or simply don’t like to be in a heavily populated sever and want one less congested. The good thing is that in order to apologize for the problems mentioned above, the service, that initially was planned to be paid, will be free to players for five days.
Yoshida-san also warned players about a few caveats:
When you transfer to a new server you may be asked to chose a new name, because a character with the same name may exist, and characters that are already on the destination server will have priority. It’s rare as characters have a first and last name, but it can happen.
If you transfer to an overcrowded world you can find login restrictions during peak hours. The currently crowded worlds are Alexander, Behemoth, Anima, Cactuar, Atomos, Excalibur (LEGACY), Carbuncle, Hyperion (LEGACY), Fenrir, Moogle (EU), Garuda, Ultros, Ifrit, Ramuh, Tiamat and Titan. Join them at your own risk.
If you have a ton of gil you may want to reconsider, as to prevent gold sellers to transfer large amounts of coinage to other servers, there will be a (yet to be announced) limit on the gil that can be transfered. Anything over that limit will be lost.
Since the transfer is a delicate process, and there can be a lot of requests, characters are required to stay logged out during the process, and in case of heavy congestion there’s a possibility for the process to last multiple days.
Yoshida-san also provided a list of worlds that have a lot of breathing room, if you want to move to a server that doesn’t have risks of congestion: Asura, Coeurl, Belias, Brynhildr, Pandaemonium, Faerie, Unicorn, Famfrit, Yojimbo, Goblin, Zeromus, Lamia, Lich (EU), Malboro, Mateus, Siren, Zalera.
Personally, I’m going to keep my comfortable spot on Balmung, but if you want a change of pace, this is your chance. Where are you going to go?
