SCE President Andrew House Explains the Five Million Sales Target for PS4, Mentions Beta for Gaikai

During the press conference before Tokyo Game Show Sony Computer Entertainment President Andrew House announced a sales target for the PS4 that surprised many, as the company plans to ship five million PS4 units before the end of the fiscal year in March. He explained the reasons behind that lofty estimate as part of an interview on the Japanese site Weekly ASCII Plus.

At Gamescom in Europe in August we announced that at that time we had received over one million preorders. We achieved a very significant milestone. Afterwards the positive interest from the users continued to grow, so we set a large goal.

We made such a positive assessment because the hardware is 10 times as powerful as the PS3, but it still has an affordable price. Because of that, it has received a very positive reaction in the American market that is sensitive to pricing.

Another point is that PS4 is a full fledged multi-functional entertainment device out of the box. When the PS3 was originally released it allowed to enjoy the latest games and Blu-ray media, but it was very much limited to games. This time you can enjoy an outstanding and responsive UI and the variety of entertainment services of the PlayStation Network  and the like from the get go. Because of this we think that we can increase the market share greatly from an early stage.

House also talked about Gaikai’s cloud gaming service that is planned to debut in North America next year, mentioning that there could be a beta before the service actually starts.

Probably at the beginning we’ll operate it as a beta test. The actual titles and the methods of purchase are still being planned at this stage.

What do you think? Will Sony manage to hit the five million shipments target by March? Things seem to be going well at the moment, both in Japan and in the west, so they actually might.

the real news story here is that this is the first we have heard that you will purchase these games on the gaikai. It was previously unknown if this would be something exclusive to PS Plus memebers and whether or not you had to pay for them or buy a subscription.

    • truthtellerdealwithit

They said they’re still planning the payment method learn to read titwank, not ‘you’ll have to purchase games’

      • Giuseppe Nelva

        What he said.

      • joe

look he said, “methods of purchase.” which would confirm that gamers are indeed purchasing these games, not renting or subscribing, purchasing as in you own it.

They better include MGS 4 as part of the beta test. Even if Kojima isn’t exclusive to PlayStation anymore. Do SNAAAAAAKKKKEEE justice, Sony. For all of us. Please.

      MGS 4?? That old game?!

      • bigshynepo

        War never changes.

        • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

War HAS changed; that is why MGS V will be different from what we’ve played in MGS ever before-trend that began with MGS4.

          • Mstrbrown

I wonder if when MGS V is released, fans/purists of the series will cry wolf similar to how they did with RE6

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

No they won’t. More people trust Kojima than they do Capcom.

          • Mstrbrown

You are only so good as your last preformance in this industry.

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

NO. ur only as good as the gamers say u are. haven’t u heard?

          • bigshynepo

You do remember that’s Snake’s famous line, right?

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

No actually that line is from Fallout 3.

          • bigshynepo

Damn, I was victim to my own pop culture confusion. You win this round *shakes fist*

Still, I wasn’t looking to dialog, just quoting games. Cheers

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Cheers indeed. But was does indeed really change though: is it our perception of war that changes with the times while the entirety of war never changes or else there would be no winning or losing or friends or enemies perhaps? Makes one wonder what it all means.

It’s old so that makes it a legacy title which Sony said that “Gaikai will give PS1-PS3 legacy titles” and I don’t see why MGS4 isn’t one. And it’s awesome cuz it has Old Snake, so yeah being that it’s an old game it’s that awesome. I’d be disappointed if it didn’t make the beta. do u not like MGS series or something, or u just think Sony wouldn’t go that far back (2008) in their titles to add to Gaikai?

        • Craig Rude-Boy Newman

Er, why not just buys MGS4 you bloody dolt?

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

I’ve already played it genius; actually played for the first time last Christmas and was completely blown away-played other games in the series except MS1 before playing that one (played MGS 1 after that and understood MGS4 much better) Hell I even played MGS4 4 times; that’s how much I LOVE that game! Passion my friend. And I actually plan to get the Legacy Collection by Christmas; MGS4 is one of the greatest games in the series and ever made period so I can’t wait to get that. Also, I want it to be on Gaikai cuz the title is vital to PS3 being around for this long as before it released it was selling like crap but now it’s a global phenomenon as we both know and second the improved control sticks and triggers and size of DS4 would make a great fit for MGS4 as DS3 wasn’t exactly my cup of tea and would greatly improve the experience and make it even better than I remember. I don’t know how many people still remember the game but I haven’t forgotten it and don’t wanna see it forgotten by it never coming to Gaikai or at least PSN or PS+. I hope you don’t.

  • RealityCheck2013
