Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is going to be released on Thursday in Japan (while in the United States we’ll have to wait for February the 11th), and more information about the game and the design philosophy behind it and its protagonist Lightning are being revealed.
During an interview on Dengeki Online (beware of very mild spoilers) Cutscene Animation Director Yusuke Tanaka explained that we’re going to see Lightning’s “moe” and “burning” sides. This is actually a word play as “Moe” (萌え, which is really hard to translate, so if you don’t know what it means you better read the detailed explanation on Wikipedia) is written in a different way from “Burning” (燃え) in Japanese, but they’re both pronounced “Moe.”
According to the instructions from Toriyama-san, we wanted to show both Lightning’s “moe” side and her “burning” side. There’s a scene when Lightning is undercover is Yusnan and she’s shy when she walks up on stage, and this is “moe.”
There’s also a scene when she waits for the Chocobo to recover. I like it a whole lot personally. In this scene she’s leaning casually on a fence. Normally you’d see the old Lightning always dashing or jumping, and she always had a reason for every action. Therefore I like it personally, because such a casual gesture was something rare for her. Since this kind of charming gestures are scattered here and there (in the game), please enjoy them.
Tanaka-san and Cutscene Layout Director Hidekazu Miyake (that was interviewed at the same time) also explained that, since Lightning is going to wear quite a few different skirts in this game, a lot of effort and adjustments have been made to make sure that her panties are never displayed, but there could have been some oversights in the process, so you never know.
Knowing certain areas of the gaming community, you can be sure that if such oversights do exist, we’ll see them no later than a week after the release of the game.
