Last year during the holidays Eorzea was silent. Final Fantasy XIV had just been closed, and while the alpha testing of A Realm Reborn was at its outset, there was no Starlight Celebration (Eorzea’s version of Christmas) for the adventurers of Square Enix’ flagship MMORPG.
Luckily the hiatus lasted only a year, and today the new Starlight Celebration kicked off, bringing its share of candy, fun and costumes.
As usual Final Fantasy XIV events excel for their art and their lore, and this one isn’t an exception, as you can see from the official flyer below.
Several generations ago, a sanguinary struggle claimed countless lives and left full as many orphans homeless and hungry. Taking pity upon their plight, a company of Ishgardian knights sought out these children each night, furnishing them with food and shelter within their barracks.
As doing so was positively prohibited, however, the knights had the children slip in while swathed in their scarlet jackets. Thus were they spared the worst of the cruel cold. These orphans survived the winter, and, later in life, they went on to convey the same kindness to others that they had once received. On the coldest week of the year, they took to sporting scarlet and passing out presents to the children of the realm. And over time, their deeds developed into the favored festival known as the Starlight Celebration.
The event will go on until December the 31st and will grant players a wealth of items including several kinds of food, a santa outfit, a reindeer outfit (both were already offered in past celebrations), a new holiday chocobo barding and a new snowman costume.
The best thing? Square Enix brought back the lovely Starlight Celebration music from the original version of the game. If you’re curious about it, you can watch a video I made last year in a moment of nostalgia at the bottom of the post. Yes, I’m a sentimental dude.
