PS4 Still Winning Against Xbox One in The United States, Says Sony; Short Supply Blamed

With the official NPD sales numbers for December released, Microsoft is celebrating as the Xbox One managed to beat the PS4 during the last month of 2013. Despite that, Sony Computer Entertainment’s Director of Corporate Communications Dan Race issued a statement to the press, mentioning that PlayStation 4 is still holding ahead of the competition when counting the two months since the launch of the new generation.

According to the latest NPD report, PlayStation 4 remains the cumulative leader for next-gen console sales in the U.S. since its launch on November 15. We sold every PS4 available at retail in the U.S. and were out of stock in December due to overwhelming consumer demand. With more than 4.2 million PS4 systems sold worldwide, it’s clear that the PS4’s gaming and entertainment features are resonating with large audiences and we’re doing our best to provide additional inventory in all of the 53 countries where it’s available.

As usual when NPD figures are disclosed, everyone is claiming victory one way or the other, and Race implies that with better supply the PS4 would have sold a lot more, which isn’t too hard to believe.

I guess the real winners, in the end, are gamers. We’re provided with multiple solid choices for our entertainment needs, and that’s always a great thing, regardless of the corporate bickering on who won the month’s sales war.

Sony is launched in over 50 countries, as opposed to the XB1’s 13. With 4.2 million units sold before the end of 2013 vs 3 million Ones, not to mention well over 9 million retail copies of next gen games sold, I don’t think Sony is too concerned.

      • BillyHoWCR

Sony is always concerned… they work from the red. When they aren’t concerned is when you as a gamer should be concerned.

I love how people like you pretend to be business analyst or wtf ever its called. Sony has billions of dollars in property and other things like that. They may not have 30 billion in the bank. But if they were to sell off more of their factories…etc..they would have just about as much money in the bank as Microsoft and other big companies. I read an article on this a while back.

          • slumdog hundredaire

So you are a business analyst then?

          • BillyHoWCR

            @Marvin Deonte’ McClain

Go ahead and link us that article I would love to read it. Would be funny. And I am assuming you are pretending to be a market analyst now?

          • slumdog hundredaire

By the Power of Cerny, this simply cannot be. The Mighty Yoshida has empowered us with the righteous weapon, the PS4, to fight against the evil forces of MS and the cancerous X1. The Sage Obama will lend resources to Sony because it is waging a noble battle and is too big to fail. 😉

    • You are flat out wrong

Nope. Fact – PS4 is outselling Xbone in nearly every major market. Fact – PS4 just about drew even in the US in December even though there were stacks of unwanted Xbones. Fact – Xdrones are the worst fanbase in the industry.

Oh yeah, another fact – that image is a parody of a Sega Dreamcast advert. You sure you want to go down that road? Dumbass Xdrone. ^_^

      • slumdog hundredaire

Please do not confuse fact with opinion….

    • DaveyF’nJones

Poor little Xbot, did you drop your juice box?

    • Chillbrah

What an Xboner. With the 5-10% margin of error it’s obvious that the PS4 actually may have won this month, but for whatever reason the NPD Group felt the need to call it for the Xbone. In my book, the first two months head to head go to the PS4

      • slumdog hundredaire

What book is this? The Infamous Book of BooBoos from Doc McStuffins?

    • Michael Norris

Ps4 is still outselling Xbone by quite a bit…if Sony had an unlimited supply MS would had barely hit 2 million,

      • slumdog hundredaire

        Unlimited eh?

    • Chillbrah

stupid xdrone, get the hell off this site xbawkssucker

  • Krakn3dfx

MS sold more, but didn’t sell out of stock, as evidenced by any Target, WalMart, etc that you walk into and can easily find half a dozen units in the case. There’s not a PS4 to be found at this point. Good on MS for selling a technically weaker console at $100 more though, especially given how quickly they dumped 1st party support for the 360 in the last 18 months.

    • bowserslovechild

Yep, my friends both have 360s and are pretty glum right now, as neither can afford (bills, rent, life costs etc considered) to upgrade. It’s great how both MS and Sony have managed to shift so much, but I still believe it will cap at some point this year. Then the real fun begins, as I honestly believe the people holding out for PS4 will get one in the end, and not grab an XBone instead. Well, maybe impatient kids…….

    • Zohak Diaz

Because microsoft has enough capital,to make new xb1s on a daily basis…. sony on the other hand….. new ps4 every month. So yes, stocks are filled with xb1s

      • Krakn3dfx

Since the PS4 has sold 4.2 million units worldwide in 2013 while the XB1 sold 3 million, that argument really doesn’t make any sense. Sony produces roughly 1.8 million/units per month per Tretton, MS likely produces roughly the same amount.

    • InspectorGadget80

I personally worked at a WALMART STORE ELECTRONICS. The reason why so many XB1’s is because either MS/WALMART sent or order too many of them plus not too many people is going to spend 500$ on a gaming system plus we have 20 XB1 while people are looking for PS4’S

      • Gideon Alvin White

Same at my place of employment, we have over 20 xbox one in stock, but whenever we get a box of 3 PS4’s, they’re sold in 30-15 minutes.

  • brianc6234

Sony has to prepare for Japan and will sell a lot. That means less for all other markets. That’s one advantage Microsoft has. Not many gamers in Japan will want an Xbone.

    • BillyHoWCR

Sony will do good in Japan. But Japan is a dead market now outside of handhelds. Just simply very small market share compared to other markets. They are not the gamers they used to be…. that is for sure.

    • David Dalfonso

Exactly….most people don’t seem to understand that…but from what I notice in store availability…xbox have been hard to come by in the last weeks, they are maybe stocking up to launch in more markets? will see…

  • Dennis Crosby

Microsoft also stated that they would more games and exclusive title to. I guess people still don’t believe that people want and xboxone and the Xboxone will be on shelves Microsoft is only in 13 countries they have plenty of supply for those 13 countries doesn’t mean there not selling any. Sony just choice to go for the early kill and get there console out to a wider audience and that why it hard to find a ps4 48vs13 is a high difference when it come to supply

    • David Dalfonso

actually….very logical….they spread their offer on too many markets so obviously demand will be a lot higher than the offer…

You gave enough to post in this article.

  • TristanPR77

The xbone sold more on December just because the PS4 wasn’t in Stock. Also, the xbone didn’t went out of stock, there were plenty.

Microsoft benefits from this situation on December but still, even with PS4 out of stock, it remained the cumulative leader on the US.

  • Michael Norris

Was at Walmart last week they had 4 Xbox ones and no Ps4’s.This has been going on since launch,i know a lot of people that game on 360 now turning to Ps4,things have changed for sure.

  • Godofhdardcore

They sold more because PS4s were sold out and still are.

    • slumdog hundredaire

So a person who wants a PS4 walks into the store and see that it is all sold out. Then he resolves to buy a different system for a $100 more because he simply cannot wait to play Resogun…..

      • Godofhdardcore

No and I take that back, nobody wants the Cablebox one other than brotards

  • slumdog hundredaire

Now we all need to diminish that MS and the X1 has achieved. For no good news can ever be associated with the X1….

    • The Xbox One was the most congenial system of December

      • slumdog hundredaire

        hahahaha 🙂

  • I believe Xbox One sold about 100k more systems than PS4 in December? I wonder how many of those were solely because PS4s were sold out…

  • Guest

I find that hard to believe since I went to a very popular Best Buy in the DC metro area yesterday and found stacks of Xbones and zero PS4s. There were even more behind the gray barrier. The clerk also informed me that this wasn’t just a recent shipment. Those have been sitting there for days.

Frederick, MD if anyone is looking.

  • dirkradke

People need to leave the hate behind. If you don’t want to buy it then don’t buy it. Just be happy you have a choice and that the future looks bright.

  • Ashe_Darkthorne

They are such full of crap they have all available stock ready to go for Japan. Those that believe a multi-billion dollar company sold out when they are prepping for their most important release in home country is absolutely absurd. But then again fanboys won’t realize fact when it is thrown at them.
