The Witcher 3 Developer: “Fairly Close” to Maxing PS4 and Xbox One; PC Gamers Should Save for an Upgrade

by on January 22, 2014 10:03 PM 31

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the most anticipated RPG of the foreseeable future both on PC and on next generation consoles, and CD Projekt RED’s Co-Founder Marcin Iwinski is pretty confident in the ability of his studio to deliver fantastic graphics. According to Iwinski the game is close to using up the capability of the PS4 and Xbox One while pushing PCs to their limits, as he told IGN in an interview:

First of all, he commented about development on PS4 and Xbox One and on how the studio has acquired enough experience to achieve great results on the new consoles:

It is extremely manageable. There is a lot of power in these machines, and I don’t want to say we’re using them to their capacity, but we’re fairly close to doing so. We made a decision to go next-gen roughly two and a half years ago, so we’ve spent a lot of time with these machines, and it’s been a great experience across all three platforms. On the old platforms, namely the Xbox 360 and PS3, we probably would have had to sacrifice nearly half of our vision.

After that, he teased what kind of PC we’ll need to run the game effectively:

(Laughs) We’ll be releasing that information soon, but you can already start saving up for an upgrade.

Personally, I already know I’ll be playing the game on PC, so I should probably start filling that piggy bank. Maybe I should ask for a raise…

While I have no doubt it’ll need some PC muscle, meeting the “ultra” spec on some games can be nuts and pretty much outrageous to anyone other than the most invested. see BF4 or Crysis 3 for that at 4K resolutions (like, who even has a 4K monitor?). Chances are, a PC gamer could get “better-than” console performance and visuals without having to do much to an already capable gaming machine.

    • SAimNE

i think more than people actually having a 4k monitor, the 4k resolutions seem so be popular with people using a 1600p or 1440p who have excess gpu power and start making use of over sampling. will agree that no one has a 4k monitor and cant really think of a reason why they should :/.

  • WellWisher

R9 290 with a non-reference cooler should come close to maxing it at 1080p.

    • Stranger On The Road

The GPU doesn’t do all the work; other components do a massive amount of the work as well. And if the machine has a 32bit OS [for whichever reason] then don’t expect much.

Any way, R9 290 + 1080p? I guess the GPU will be ideal most of the time :-)

As a RPG fan, as a console player, I’m buying PS4 this year for this title. I hope the experience is worthy.

  • bigshynepo

I’m was surprised at the requirements to run Witcher 2 at full high settings, I’ll be skipping the graphics card upgrades and getting the console version this time around.

Can’t wait for this game, easily my most anticipated announced RPG (after Stick of Turth)!

    dat Witcher ubersampling

What kind of PC do you have Giuseppe? They plan to make use of PhysX 3.0 so you might want to get Nvidia cards just in case.

  • Butthurtps4

Can’t wait for xb1 version to release, will be best version they said, excited.

    • datdude

There hasn’t been a single multiplatform game released yet that has been better on xbone. You are really confused if you think the Witcher 3′s best version will be the bone’s version. More than likely, it will be the least capable system to run the game, with pc first, then ps4, and then the xbone, as is it’s usual routine thus far this gen, bringing up the proverbial rear.

    • Gavin

Hahaha, sure it will… sure it will…

Just deal with the fact that it will NEVER be that way. PS4 has materially higher graphics capabilities. Look at the already-released multiplats. You think that is suddenly going to change? It is what it is. You buy the XB720p if you like the exclusives and the media capabilities. You do NOT buy it if you want top-notch console graphics. End of story.

        ?..so say’s the pony!

  • PS4Fever .

So the cycle of nonsense starts again.”Oh we’ve maxed out blah blah” how many times did we hear it last gen when they weren’t even close. Mark cerny said the ps4 has technologies that wont be used till another year or 2 which will greatly enhance the performance and graphics.

    • Harerazer

I fully agree. When i read this I thought “So you’ve already pushed the systems to their limits and they’ve only been out for a few weeks? You guys must be geniuses!”
Maybe when they learn to code more efficiently they’ll change their story.

      • Gamingsince75

It’s not really that hard to max something that is made from mid range laptop parts. You guys cant really be that clueless can you? Its using what laptops have had available for 3 years now. This isn’t the Cell. Its basic X86 Architecture that any PC dev has years of experience with.

        • PS4Fever .

Didn’t you listen to mark cerny speak at all?? they modified the cpu/gpu and added things of their in there, which hasnt been utilized yet. Do you really think sony would would release a console that isn’t future proof!!?

          • PegasusOrgans

You can’t upgrade any playstation, so, yeah, Sony has NEVER future-proofed their machines. Do you even know what “future-proof” means?

  • Eat_the_Fetus

PC version will of course be best. Sadly the people that need to upgrade are the same people using hardware from three and four gens ago playing WoW and SCII while masturbating with bananas. PC enthusiasts are more than likely already well prepared for anything Witcher 3 can come up with. Super stoked for this game though for sure! PC Master Race only!!!!

    • Preston queener

PC master race give me a break. Its just a pc same goes for the PS4 and Xbox one. There just consoles. Its just a game calm down.

      • Gamingsince75

Except my PC isn’t limited to 3 year old outdated laptop chips.
Maybe save the condescending tone til you actually know what you are talking about.

  • matt

Games like this are usually heavily gpu dependent.

  • Gamingsince75

Just came from News4Sonyponys and loving how truly ignorant those people are.
PS4 is using mid range laptop parts. Sorry but there is no secret sauce in outdated and inferior tech.
you even have them here. “PS4 has secret parts that wont be used for years to come” how stupid can you really be? Of course every time I ask that, one of the sheep makes a comment that surpasses what was previously said.
Of course most real gamers will be playing it on PC where the graphics are the best. Console are a poor mans PC this gen more than ever. Well poor people and kids.

    • Idremhd

And you wonder why you still haven’t lost your virginity

  • Nicholas Perry

Hopefully they leave in controller interface and support in the PC version.(*AS AN OPTION*) That’d be a slap to the face!

  • You are flat out wrong

In the same way Tomb Raider was going to perform identically?

CDPR must have felt like proper idiots going on MS’ E3 conference when the Xbone isn’t even out in their native Poland and doesn’t even have a release date.

  • Paulo Ferreira

Developing a game that can only run on high end hardware would be stupid for any developer because the majority of pc owners own low to mid end gaming pcs with some even lower. So I’m sure witcher 3 will be very well optimized and be a lot more playable with different set ups then witcher 2 was. There’s a reason gaming on consoles is so popular it’s called ease of use, stability, and affordable for all plus it’s easier for developer a game for one specific et of specs like with consoles then it is for pc since not everyone uses same hardware. Games aren’t all about power or hardware specs if that were the case then consoles would have never lasted this long or be in the front seat.

Also to comment about ps4 being mid range when it comes to its hardware I agree and disagree at same time because 8 gigs of GDDR 5 ram is not mid range how many pc owners you know have 8 GDDR 5 ram? Also I agree that ps4 is not fully future proof but it does have the 8GB of GDDR5 ram which is better then the DDR 3 ram both PCs and Xbox 1 uses and with ps4 you can upgrade your hard drive as well with an pc hard drive as long as it is within same dimensions meaning it fits. Something you can’t do with the Xbox one btw So I wouldn’t say Sony didn’t future proof the PS4 at all maybe just not fully but somewhat they have done some future proofing and you never know what else you can do with the ps4.

Having said all that I love my gaming pc and will admit as of right now pcs are more powerful that’s a fact but that’s ok because that’s not what makes games fun or better and consoles really only have to have enough power. The bottom line is the only 2 things that sets pc and consoles apart is the pc being fully upgradeable and the OS, that’s pretty much it. The line between pc and console has gotten thinner and may even someday not even exist with consoles like the steam console on the horizon the line becomes even thinner.
