Naughty Dog on PS4 Uncharted in 2014 and The Last of Us GOTY Edition: “Ha. Doubtful” (UPDATED)

by on January 23, 2014 3:50 PM 31

Update: according to an update provided to PlayStation Lifestyle Monacelli was referring only to the Uncharted 4 easter eggs part of the question, so back to square one we go.

I answer the questions when replying. The only question was the Easter egg question. A lot of passion and gossip happening otherwise!

Original article below:

Many are wondering when the new Uncharted for PS4, of which we’ve seen just a teaser so far, will actually hit Sony’s new console, and according to Naughty Dog’s Community Strategist Eric Monacelli it’s “doubtful” that it’ll come in 2014. The same reply has been given for a PS3 Game of the Year edition for The Last of Us in a comment on the official PlayStation Blog.

uncharted4doubtfulFrom the same string of comments we also learn that the Left Behind story DLC for The Last of Us will include trophies, even if Monacelli didn’t include specifics. He did mention that information will come “later”. The Last of Us: Left Behind will be released on February 14th, and according to Monacelli those that purchased the season pass will still receive its pre-order bonuses.

Looks like we’ll have to wait over a year to be able to play Uncharted on PS4, but hopefully we’ll hear more about it soon, probably at E3.

I’m assuming that UC for ps4 will drop in the summer of 2015 at a time similar to the Last of Us. They have hung on to that November release in the past, but TLOU did so well at its date it’s a good possibility that they will use some extra time to push the game out then. It also makes sense considering that the “blockbuster” season for movies has always been the summer, whereas games have often steered clear of the whole season, leaving a wide gap for devs to take advantage of. I could see many games in the new gen using this as a new blockbuster season for awhile, the thinking in the past has always rationalized that the warmer weather will push potential gamers outside and away from their boxes, but the movies always do so well during that time, similar experiences like Uncharted could benefit from the lack of competition. That said, the tweet in question seemed to reply “doubtful” referring to receiving any UC “easter eggs” more than the status of the actual games, which ND have been careful to not reveal any specific info for yet.

I would love to see some publishers’ internal analysis on the release dates. Part of me feels like if you have a great game it doesn’t matter when you release it.

      • Averix

True, but if a game gets a later release date, that means they’re spending more money to make it. Meaning, less profit if you push back a release date. Sadly, it’s less about quality for most companies than it is money. I have a deep respect for the companies that push releases back to polish and make a game they can be proud of. I think that Infamous will be one of those. Hopefully UC4 doesn’t need to be pushed.

      • jb223

I’d love to see that too, I’m sure a game like the Last of Us would’ve been successful whenever it was released, but it could have only helped that there weren’t very many other AAA games being released around that time. Devs w/ a pedigree as high as ND’s will always create curiosity for gamers, but I’d think that gamers who would typically maybe rent the game or wait for a price drop during a busier season would be more likely to outright buy a game when there aren’t many others releasing in close proximity. It’d be nice to do away w/ the summer drought, spread these games out a bit, there’s no reason for this constant head to head, I feel like that loses more sales than it gains.

The Last of Us: Left Behind even apart of the season pass?

      • ALKi1234

I’m confused as well. I got the new maps dlc season pass does that mean i have to pay again or full prices?

      • jb223

I’m pretty sure it is a part of the season pass, I surely couldn’t see Naughty Dog or Sony gouging their fans like that

Uncharted has been horrible starting with 3 to now, pretty graphics, bad platforming, poor predictable story, lame characters, horrible gunplay, but hey it looks pretty tho! So glad I got rid of my ps4, what a waste that was, I was excited for sony exclusives until I saw Xboxs. My ps4 broke, got fixed, and sold it and bought an xb1, best decision ever, titanfall soon baby, forza is a blast, can’t wait for the future, sony u messed up and I feel bad for the ps4 fanbots who mindlessly stick up for their box, lololololol ps3.5 is right,

    • DarthDiggler

Going by your choice in nomenclature it’s pretty obvious you just here to be a nuisance.

Uncharted has been a gem in the gaming industry. All 3 games are spectacular
with the 2nd and 3rd really showcasing would could be done with the PS3. Your opinion of the game is far outside of the norm and suggest that you likely didn’t spend much time with the Uncharted series. Look on Metacritic and you will quickly find out you are in the minority.

The XBONE’s launch library wasn’t that much better than PS4′s Forza being
the only one released that actually delivered 1080p native graphics and didn’t produce frame rates that can’t compete with a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.

Everyone was pretty excited about Titanfall until they found out the match sizes would resemble something from the PS2 / XBOX era of gameplay. Not saying it won’t be good, just pretty shocking that MS and Respawn would brag about the Microsoft Cloud and what it does for their game and they go on to announce 6 vs 6 gameplay. IMHO was a pretty lame introduction to MS’s supposed “game
changer” cloud. Have fun shooting AI bots.

It is well documented that the XBONE doesn’t have the horsepower that PS4 does. Furthermore there are already large discreptancies in the graphical performance in PS4 and XBONE. Feel free to bury your head in the sand and proclaim your console the winner, but you may be speaking prematurely.

Now if you had just said, I sold my PS4 and got the XBONE because I like XBOX better, there would be no argument. You entitled to own and like an inferior console if you so choose, but you can’t position the XBONE as the stronger hardware this generation. That is factually incorrect and already proven so via the lack of native 1080p/60fps on the XBONE for a great many titles.

Whilst I agree the other guy is around just to annoy others, and that it’s pretty silly pinning your dreams on just one game, I’m failing to see where he / she mentioned the X1 was the more powerful console. I read it among the lines that the felt the X1 has the superior games (which, to be fair, X1 games at the moment does seem to have more interesting, and a variety of, titles).

    • TraceSkipper

      dont you mean titansmall?

    • tarbis

You mean your imaginary PS4 that you never bought. Yes, yes, I believe you

    • You are flat out wrong

Flopza is a disaster and Titanflop is COD with mechs. Well done wasting $500. ^_^

      • bowserslovechild

        B…B…But….. Cut out crowds FTW…..?

        • You are flat out wrong

Seventh gen sprites and microtransactions are an eighth gen experience, don’t you know.

    • bowserslovechild

Your whole argument is rendered even more pointless due to your username and mindless name-calling. You never had a PS4 to begin with. Enjoy your DVR.

  • BalramRules

Naughty Dog, don’t make me cry, pleaseeee keep the 2014 release. :D
(Unless it means a sacrifice in game quality, in which, go ahead, Summer 2015, just make sure it doesn’t suck).

Naughty will never sacrify quality to release a game. All popularity of the studio is based on quality. Stop say bullshit bro !please.

  • Axe99

Good games take time, be patient and let devs take what they need to make them great :).

  • PrinceHeir

lol i read the same BS they said about UC3 and surprise surprise!

it’s gonna happen, Sony will force them to make a GOTY edition whether he likes it or not.

  • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Looks like I better get Left Behind before I get “left behind”. Also, instead of GOTY edition, why can’t everyone say “GOTYE”?

    • Terramax

I think there’s a singer who goes by that name. Perhaps a legal reason :D

      • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Yes i know but surely I wouldn’t be illegal to start using that acronym just pertaining to this, would it?

  • NeoMahi

I need GOTY Edition so I can have a physical copy of the single-player dlc. DLC and downloadable games do dissapear from PSN over time and you want to go back and play a classic, you won’t be able too. I can appreciate gamers want to move forward with technology, but we’re seeing now that it comes at a cost.

  • extermin8or2

Hes talkimg about tlou on ps4…. it was kade clear afterwards.

  • Stu

How has this become a story, the reply was in response to Easter Eggs, not release dates. By the end of this year, Uncharted 4 will have been in development for three full years, that’s two more than each previous iteration in the series.

It should be quite clear by now Sony aren’t releasing any dates until they are good and ready. The policy has changed, they no longer announce titles years in advance, there was no worse culprit than Gran Turismo, yet GT6 was announced and released in little more than six months.

  • PatcherStation

I can see Uncharted 3: Game of the Year Edition on the PS3, but not the PS4. I don’t see the point on the PS4, as only the graphics would benefit. But looking at the amount of Uncharted games in the series (4), I think most would’ve settled for The Last of Us 2 on the PS4, rather than Uncharted 4. Uncharted should’ve had a break. Not sure if Uncharted 4 will make it to the PS3, but it’ll probably be PS4 only. Can’t say I rated Uncharted 3 and the Vita version. The Last of Us on the Vita would be great, as long as it wasn’t the PS3 version, as the Vita got its own Uncharted game. I’d like to see a new franchise by Naughty Dog, as 2 franchises isn’t enough. Uncharted 4 won’t be released this year. Sony will wait until the PS4 hits a certain level. With launch consoles, there’s always a slow process with new releases. In some cases, some early games don’t sell enough, so you’re made to wait (like it or not).
