Sony/Sucker Punch Have “Quite a Bit of Input” on Sly Cooper Movie; Choice of CG over Cel Shading Explained

Today we got quite a few info on the upcoming Sly Cooper movie, with the first pictures and trailer, and Blockade Entertainment’s Producer Brad Foxhoven shared some more details in a few comments on the PlayStation Blog.

If you were worried about Sony and Sucker Punch not participating to deciding the direction of the movie, worry no more, as they do give “quite a bit of input.”

Sucker Punch and Sony do have quite a bit of input, and approval over these designs. We appreciate the fans feedback, and will make sure to address them on into the production.

We also learn why CG has been chosen over the classic cel shading to bring Sly Cooper to the silver screen:

We looked into the cel shaded style, but it just didn’t hold up on the big screen. For TV, sure – just not a theatrical film. Together, with Sucker Punch and Sony, we decided to go the CG route. Everyone was involved in this decision, and we all like the way its turning out.

We will continue to tweak and improve upon the characters as we enter production.

Foxhoven also explained that new talent has been brought into the team to make sure that the quality of the film will be up to par:

Wanted to say that it’s a completely different team. We (Blockade) helped bring in new talent for the film to make sure it was to the level we all want to see on the big screen!

Finally, he he teased about news “coming” for the Heavenly Sword movie, which is also in production.

Hopefully the Sly Cooper film will deliver an experience that will meet the approval of the many long standing fans of the franchise. We’ll make sure to keep you posted on any further info we’ll receive on its production.

This is good news to hear, so at the very least, it will have a Sly Cooper story, I just hope the character models get improved so that they look like they do from the games.

I can’t help but feel a film is more of a marketing ploy to sell the games, rather than the film being something made to be a great audience experience.

I know you can say that for just any film – that it’s ultimately about the money – but seeing as Sly has never been a game lauded for great storytelling or characterisation, there seems to be no reason of making a film of the franchise besides an attempt at making the game franchise more commercially viable in the future.

I definitely agree that this would/could help tons for the franchise, but in this day and age where everything has been made into a movie — Legos, Smurfs, etc — I don’t blame them for taking the game to the movie realm.

If they can pull off a successful movie, they could increase attention to the games and make money off both. And being that he’s an anthropomorphic thieving raccoon, it’ll automatically draw in the “kid crowd” (and their parents) making even better money.

Frankly, I’m surprised this trend hasn’t started already, with Spyro and other characters. The movie business loves this stuff right now, and even a moderate success brings in millions.
