Black Tusk Studios has the “Most Impressive” Xbox One Tech; Could Define Next Gen According to Insider

by on January 30, 2014 3:48 AM 47

Ahsan Rasheed, well known as Thuway on twitter and NeoGaf always had a quite good track record with the information he gets from his industry his sources, and according a recent tweet Black Tusk Studios, currently working on the next Gears of War game, should not be underestimated.

Also don’t sleep on Black Tusk, they have the chops to define next-gen. Insiders were hearing they had the most impressive X1 tech long ago.

As usual, as everything coming from “insiders,” we should take this with a pinch of salt, but it’s definitely not hard to believe. Microsoft has probably selected Black Tusk Studio for a franchise as relevant as Gears of War for a very precise reason, and that reason can only be the talent within the studio itself.

We only need to watch the tech demo showcased at Microsoft’s latest E3 press conference to see what Black Tusk is capable of. Check it out below to see what I mean.

hmm…wondering if black tusk can go up against naughty dog.
could be interesting. well, we won’t know for quite some time.

    • shinitaru

Not if they are stuck making Gears of War rehashes

      • corvusmd

You’re right, but if they were stuck with Uncharted and LoU rehashes…

        • shinitaru

Those Uncharted is getting a bit stale too but at least it has a stronger narrative. It’s not the gameplay or the graphics that makes ND so great, it’s the way they mix those elements to tell a good story.
Gears of War, not so much

          • Redinferno124

Thats why I think they split into two teams. One writes the checks, one takes risk. Worked out great with Uncharted 3 and The last of Us.

        • Crapgamer

I wouldn’t say Uncharted and The Last Of Us are rehashes, but I’d say Naughty Dog is a victim of its own success. They wont be making anything but those two games for the foreseeable future.

          • Bankai

Naughty Dog never sticks with a franchise for too long, so the most we’ll likely get is a sequel to TLOU, then they’ll move on.

        • Redinferno124

Rehashes? Sure we have 3 uncharted games and the Last of Us which share similar mechanics, but bother are night and day different. Besides, we wont be seeing Uncharted 4 or the Next Gears for at least another year or more.

      • avi

Who knows. Maybe they can a good emotional story in it. Gears still has lots of room for improvements and the universe is huge

        • shinitaru

All universes are huge….but it already has a fanbase that expects a certain kind of game, do you think they are going to change things up and risk alienating them in hopes of attracting fans of a different type of game?
Better to just come up with a new IP, have someone else make Gears, that way everyone is happy

          • Redinferno124

The problem is that While it sounds like Black Tusk may in fact be MS’s Naughty Dog, as someone above mentioned, they can only realize their potential if they can work on other projects besides gears.

Gears of War was never the Narrative “Masterpiece” that man claim it to be, it is a dudebro shooter with good gameplay that has since been copied. This isn’t a knock against it, I’m only repeating what many of us are thinking.

If Naughty Dog can make a game like the Last of Us while working on an Uncharted title, than so can Black Tusk. Keep in mind that while we are on Uncharted 4, we wont see that game until at least late next year. If Black Tusk wants to be the ND of Xbox, they need to really think hard on what a next gen Gears is, not rehash 3 with better graphics.

I don’t own an X1, but I really want to see some new IPs from Xbox, that way we have some true variety this gen between systems and not just rely on what worked before.

          • Redinferno124

Whoever was in the middle of a reply, I didn’t know editing would kick you, so continue.

          • jb223

I’ve had that happen to me before and wondered if that messed up the poster, but it didn’t mess up my reply at all, great post by the way

          • jb223

I would think that Black Tusk could go multi-team as well, but Phil Spencer has confirmed that that is just not in the cards for the immediate future. He said that the team needs time to grow before they can even consider splitting it off, which makes perfect sense. Look at Naughty Dog, they were a single team studio for years, if not well over a decade or so before they tried splitting up into two teams. I’m totally with you in the hopes that this gen will bring more compelling new ip’s and exclusives for both boxes, but for as much as Microsoft has been shouting from the rooftops that their plans are as such, their recent actions point to the complete opposite. As far as Black Tusk becoming a Naughty Dog level studio, I don’t see that as a possibility. Even if they infused Gears w/ something worthwhile, they are still being forced to work in very narrow constraints. Naughty Dog has had over 2 full generations to become the powerhouse they are now, and they have been afforded the freedom to experiment w/ their games, Black Tusk is a brand new studio that has a very tight leash by most accounts. Hopefully MS rights the ship to start correcting the mistake of rehashing their last gen, All gamers should have access to new experiences this gen.

          • Redinferno124

But I’m hoping that this all isn’t talk from MS though. They need to start delivering on these huge promises.

Unfortunately, BTS will not have 2 generations like ND did to prove themselves. They will have to show their chops just 2 years. I wish them luck. They have a long road ahead of them and everyone is watching.

          • jb223

Yeah same here, these days it seems like devs and publishers across the board are great at talking up their games before release as being these amazing huge innovative experiences, but more often than not, those are the games that are decent at best. It’s the humble devs that tend to put out the quality games across the board it seems. Guys like Ken Levine and devs like Rockstar & Naughty Dog seem to just put it out there that they are working very hard and hoping that the gamers enjoy their wares.

That said, with the amount of talent at Black Tusk, I’m sure anything they do will be worthwhile, MS just needs to scale back some of their hype and work on delivering and following through on promises first and foremost before switching gears and moving onto the next thing. MS has a great shot at financing some great new games, hopefully they take that chance instead of falling back on the sure money.

          • Redinferno124

Hype is the problem. Sony isn’t innocent either. But Ryse and Forza really pissed me off because the only thing people got caught up on were the graphics and when people finally got their hands on these games, there were quite a few people that were disappointed.

Hell, I played Forza 4 on 360 and when I saw what they had done to it, with launching far less cars and tracks with the option to buy them later, I just shook my head. Same with Ryse. It’s pretty now, but people are in for a shock if the think that’s the best games can look. Gamers need to start being smart about which devs they support.

It’s one thing to be excited, it’s another to be blinded by marketing into overlooking glaring flaws in a game just because you want it to be good.

KZ Shadow Fall, while good, was overhyped too, but how many KZ ads did you all see compared to Ryse?

Point is you all need to be smarted. Get Excited, not blind and mindless.

          • jb223

Totally agreed. Maybe it’s a product of people being born in the internet age, but the endless hype train seems to always lead to disappointment unless there is a history behind it in the form of products coming from trusted sources. Even then it’s a crapshoot, and more often than not, the best products across the board from all mediums tend to be the ones that don’t see this huge level of hype. In this day & age, marketers have hype down to a science, better to temper it like you said and go into everything w/ an open mind, there’s nothing worse than seeing people trying to find a way to credit bad products in order to save face from months of being endlessly hyped and turning up lackluster. That’s the great thing about new ip’s, they are harder for companies to inflate so they have to fall back on just making quality products and hoping word of mouth moves units after release.

          • Redinferno124

They need to change things up somewhere in the same way Mass Effect 4 will have some fresh ideas, but it’s still Mass Effect. Gears needs to be rejuvenated if they want to crank out another trilogy.

  • Escopablobar

I love Gears. The story was pretty good (not great). The action and gameplay were without rival for a long time. With that said I have similar anxiety as experienced for Halo 4. We have a different dev and a new story arch that must be established. I hope they deliver a compelling narrative, beautiful grafx and equally addictive gameplay.

    • JerkDaNERD7

I still remeber when I first seen and played it. AMAZING! Now what else can they add to it? SCALE IT and make it BIGGER and BADDER!…..AND FASTER!!

  • neko working

    dunno

  • kevin

Go head BTS shut everyone the hell.

  • You are flat out wrong

Pity it’s being wasted making Epic’s unwanted leftovers and we won’t see it for over two years.

    • Crapgamer

If it was unwanted why were all Xbox One owners asking repeatedly about the franchise? Epic Games doesn’t want to do any games at all, they are content with mobile and licensing out their Engines. Someone sounds salty that Gears is a Xbox exclusive forever.

The best part about this is when you go to a place like N4G you’ll never see idiots talking about “Can’t wait till it comes to PlayStation”. :)

      • You are flat out wrong

Because you were scared of it going to the PS4. Not that it would, the series was more or less dead after Judgment was released. Still, you get the prospect of a game in two years so I guess it wasn’t a total waste of money. :)

If Epic doesn’t want to do games anymore, why are they making Fortnite?

        • JerkDaNERD7

No one was scared. Gears before all of this had already seem to be put out to pasture, lol. Epic still knew the title and what had come with it had revenue potentials, they just were overly exhausted at what else they would do with it. As Cliff had stated, he’s glad Gears is in good hands.

” If Epic doesn’t want to do games anymore, why are they making Fortnite? ”

But what is always getting in the way of Fornite?! Exactly what they are most focused on, their Engines and it’s licensing.

          • Redinferno124

Are you guys really fighting over crap like this? I don’t believe you fanboys when you say you have zero interest in games on another platform. If you truly weren’t interested, you wouldn’t be here on these articles talking about them.

Just because I hated Gears of War doesn’t mean I’m not curious to see where it could go.

        • corvusmd

It’s so dead and worthless that you feel you need to spend all your time trolling an article you don’t care about…trying to guarantee that the game will never go anywhere, good thing no one values your opinion and everyone can see how scared and insecure you are

          • You are flat out wrong

Literally takes me a minute to demolish Xdrone delusion. It’s a public service.

      • corvusmd

I love how he swears they are Epic’s unwanted leftovers, yet Epic has even stated that they will still be working closely with the title and providing XB1 special engine considerations….the PS spin around here is ridiculous…remember when statements were based on facts, not what the writer wanted to believe???

        • You are flat out wrong

When even CliffyB can’t be bothered past a flowery press release, you know it’s abandoned. Enjoy waiting until 2016 for the Xbone’s first game.

          • Crapgamer

Cliffy B did make a nice blog post about it. Said Phil Spencer called him personally to tell him about the deal and everything. Just so it wouldn’t be a shock.

Do you mean wait until 2016 for the first Xbox One Gears? That’s fine with me. When you have the likes of Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Halo, Forza Horizon 2, Project Spark, Fable Legends and various other titles you have plenty to keep yourself busy.

          • You are flat out wrong

Enjoy it, that’s all you’re getting for the next two years.

  • Crapgamer

I’m a huge Gears fan, so obviously Microsoft keeping the game off competing consoles is huge and it probably hurt some deluded people who thought Gears would come to PlayStation.

That being said, if Black Tusk has all this great tech, then why are “insiders” saying their game was cancelled? It seems like supposed insiders contradict each other quite a bit these days. Thuway is about as accurate as Wild Thing Vaughn without a pair of glasses.

    • Bankai

From what I’ve seen, no one seems to be affected by the news – which isn’t surprising seeing as Gears stopped being good after the first game. The biggest blow to some PlayStation fans is the fact that the first Titanfall won’t be on PlayStation, but I don’t even see many people complaining about that, probably because it looks bland.

      • JerkDaNERD7

        Titanfall looks bland?!

Wow, you in denial. People like you with such opinions are and few between and why you’re the only ones on here complaining about it. While most LOVES the game mechanics and how fun and addicting it really is.

    • JerkDaNERD7

The article states that Black Tusk Studios has been developing for the Xbox One long before any studio or in other words, “stealth development”.

Meaning they have already taken advantage of the technology in the Xbox One, which it does have or support compared to PS4. So whatever incubating ideas they were developing on has been transitioned now to Gears. While the “new all-original IP” has been put on hold. Not cancelled. Phil Harrison has stated this time and again.

IMO, I think it’s a great idea. Their first development title will in a way ease em’ into the industry. The gaming mechanics, story line and characters of Gears are there already. Now they can focus more on exercising their talent instead of worrying about what IFs. Also a plus side would be that their previous new IP would have more time to adapt to whatever development tools to take advantage of overtime.

      • Redinferno124

Naughty Dog has had PS4 dev kids for a long time too, as have Sucker Punch, Santa Monica and Sony’s other studios.

Point is MS and Sony are not stupid. They have had their best people working with these systems for awhile. Both are in great spots.

        • JerkDaNERD7

          …Okay?!

You made a point I never brought up to even deny, LOL!

          • Redinferno124

Good point. Reading through your comments again I see you were being pretty straight forward. For some reason, your comment read very sarcastically to me, hence the response. The last few articles have turned into a pissing match in the comments and it’s getting really old. I’m just getting sick of the way people lunge at news just to insult someone with different views. Apologies.
