Kojima: Metal Gear Solid V Had an “80’s Filter” But it Was Removed Because it Slowed the Game Down

Legendary Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain Director Hideo Kojima mentioned today that his studio developed a visual filter that made games look like a movies shot in the eighties, but it was removed because it slowed down the system.

“RUSH” had very 70’s texture & tone of film. In fact we studied 80’s image & developed “80’s filter” for MGSV as TPP is placed in 1984. CONT

(CONT) But when we actually implemented full screen effect, it was too heavy that slowed the system down so we had to take it out.

Interestingly enough, Kojima-san mentioned The Phantom Pain and not the upcoming prologue Ground Zeroes. That might indicate that the filter was intended for the full game or for both.

Considering that The Phantom Pain has been reported to be in development exclusively for next generation consoles (PS4 and Xbox One) this “80’s filter” must have been a real resource hog in order to considerably slow down the new machines by Sony and Microsoft.

Who knows, maybe we could get to see this mysterious filter as an optional setting in a possible PC port down the line. After all Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance got one, so we can still hope, can’t we?

blah blah blah.thalk about how ground zeroes has just 2 hours worth of gameplay.talk about how it”s price is 30 and 40 dollars.

I’m hoping that GZ comes included with Phantom Pain, or at the very least a price drop. Because $40 for a demo on PS4 or buy the game on PS3 for $20 is out of the question….

The phantom pain isn’t going to be 59.99.

blahblahblah you’ve obviously never played a metal gear game.

you are wrong.i played every single game and have the retailer version.but i cant undrestand why should i give money for 2 hours game.

        • dieger

Then don’t? no one is forcing you to pay it..

        • ChatWraithDeux

The main campaign can be rushed in two hours, according to someone who has apparently played the game, in some unverified account. That has nothing to do with sidequests, or anything else in the game.

Think how short MGS4 would be if it had no cutscenes.

How about reading an article about that instead of reading one that obviously isn’t about the price or length or even about Ground Zeroes.

Good. I hate filters, especially film grain

  • Stranger On The Road

For proper experience, the filter should have forced the image to be 4:3 only. That would have reduced the resources needed 🙂
