The Witcher 3 Developer: Both PS4 and Xbox One “Wonderful Pieces of Hardware;” Allow to “Go Crazy” on Visuals and Gameplay

by on February 13, 2014 5:24 AM 29

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is shaping up more and more as a RPG powerhouse for storytelling, gameplay and visuals, and Lead Gameplay Designer Maciej Szcześnik seems definitely confident that both the PS4 and the Xbox One will be able to raise to the challenge just fine, as he told GamesTM in an interview:

We wanted to put as much force as we could into the punch that, we hope, will change the RPG genre for a long time. Both consoles are wonderful pieces of hardware and allow us to go crazy on the visuals and gameplay ideas. This next generation of hardware will mean a next generation of graphics and storytelling in open-world RPGs.

Szcześnik also mentioned that, while the story remains the focal point of the game, the development team is working hard to making sure that the action combat part of the game will be up to par:

We want to make an extremely good RPG for next-gen platforms. Our intention is to convince people that it’s a revolutionary game not because it’s the only game available, but because it’s truly good. Will it help? It might, but we’re not thinking about it – we’re making the best game we can, not wishing there’s no competition when we launch. That would be stupid, because there’s always another game, be it RPGs, strategy, sports or shooters; it’s not like gamers play one genre only. In terms of our audience, I hope it reaches everyone who values a good story in a mature environment. The story is always the most important part of the experience for us, but this time around combat could stand on its own so even action-orientated gamers will like it.

CD Projekt RED’s strictly hardware-agnostic policy is quite interesting, especially in an industry where many developers are either starting to take sides or struggle to provide equal performance on both consoles. Yet, the house of The Witcher has already surprised us many times, so it’s very possible that they’ll manage to sweep us off our feet once more.

We still don’t have a firm release date for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but hopefully we’ll manage to play it by the end of the year.

X1 just caught up with the PS4 its soon going to overtake the PS4 in visual fidelity and then the world

Why would people take every chance they got to discuss marginal differences in graphics? The difference between both is so small that its hardly noticeable with the naked eye. What happened to the gamers that were just in it for the gameplay? The Witcher 3 will be a beautiful game, but if you just buy it to showcase the graphics than I don’t believe that you’re really interested in gaming. You might as well buy a stack of fantasy Blu Rays then and drool over the photorealistic action.
I hope the Witcher will deliver gameplay wise and without too many bugs and patches. I believe gamers should be more worried bout unfinished games releasing every month or micro-transactions than bicker over 1080p vs 720p.

just giving a bit of smack before the SDF come wailing in saying how much itll be better on the PS4

      • Mikeherp Derp

720p to 1080p, 30 fps to 60 fps. “hardly noticeable with the naked eye” LOL.

        • Psionicinversion

that was before the faster SDK, move over PS4 the X1 is coming through!

          • Michael Norris

You realize that SDK can only do so much. The hardware holds Xbone back not software.Ps4 has more RoP’s more CU’s one extra cpu core 1.84tf vs 1.31 better ram GDDR5 vs DDR3.The hardware advantage will never go away.

          • Psionicinversion

Ok maybe it wont beat it but itll get very close… tbh if there not maxing the PS4 there deliberately holding back so theyve got something to show off in the future. Isnt hard to max the PS4 with the right settings.

          • Mikeherp Derp

Sorry the X1 is going nowhere, especially in sales. Don’t cry too much when PS4 launches in Japan this month.

        • Boerewors

I specifically didn’t say anything bout FPS, cause I believe that IS important. But upscaled 720 or native 1080 doesn’t make any noticeable difference while actively gaming at 10ft from the tv for most people, especially because you don’t have both consoles playing side by side for a comparison…at least, most people don’t. 95% of the gamers wouldn’t notice the difference if the controllers were the same, I’m absolutely positive…yet every discussion end in a fight over resolution. At the moment I like my Wii U the best: Nintendo seems to understand that it’s important to deliver games that run smooth and are finished…if every developer was that committed, we wouldn’t have to fight about resolution; we would be too busy gaming.

          • Mikeherp Derp

PS4 outselling Xbox nearly 2:1 globally in January indicates consumers disagree with you and want the cheaper more powerful system.

          • Boerewors

Powerful… Nah! If the One was $100 cheaper and avaible worldwide it would be the other way around. The difference between both isn’t that big… But if the somewhat more powerful is $100 cheaper, than you’ll obviously loose every neutral customer.
I chose a PS4 over the One and I have at least 10 good reasons, difference in resolution isn’t one.

          • Mikeherp Derp

Disagree, the demand for Xbox in countries they haven’t launched in (Asia, smaller European countries, etc.) is pitifully small, especially since PS3 already had dominance in most of them, and PS4 has already launched in some of them. Launching in more countries won’t do much for Xbox at all. Expect 2:1 globally by end of 2014.

            Bless erm☺

          • Boerewors

Funny how you keep on ignoring what I say. First you correct me on a FPS matter I didn’t bring up. Then I state that the power isn’t that important and you tell me I’m wrong, but you drag in the enormous difference in price as if I’d mentioned it. Finally when I try to tell you that people let their wallets talk for them and that the huge difference in price is way more important than the marginal difference in hardware…. You pick out the irrelevant part of worldwide availability to prove your point. It’s okay to disagree with me, and clearly you feel that the difference in resolution ís noticeable and important to people…. I think the price is way more important and that the resolution is hyped, but it might impact people…but for all the wrong reasons. There are numerous examples of 720p games looking way better than 1080p games, because of upscaling and other nifty techniques developers use.
The main reason why no one outside the USA should get an One in my opinion (except for the brand loyalists) is because the whole “all in One” experience isn’t available anywhere else. It doesn’t work well with the PAL standard TV sets, there are no partnerships with cable companies and the voice remote is terrible when you have an accent other than an American.
But sacrificing a native 1080 experience for me would never be a problem if the One was the cheaper of the two and actually delivered as promised. There already have been several tests comparing the One vs PS4 graphics on BF and CoD f.e. in a “blind test” (ofcourse just the consoles weren’t revealed ;) ). There were no significant differences in the consoles people preferred, with the largest group of people not noticing any difference at all.
So if you ask me, PS4 is the way to go if you can only afford 1 console. But the ongoing war about resolution is ridiculous; it should be all about games…

          • Gamez Rule

“But the ongoing war about resolution is ridiculous”…To you that maybe the case, but not to other people like myself that wants a better looking game ( out the two same games ) when one is 900p cut back while the other ones full HD ( with no cut backs ) it becomes important☺ ( as an example )

          • Mikeherp Derp

More people care about res and price/performance than you think, apparently, going by sales.

        • Psionicinversion

just because the PS4 hits 60 fps on the menu screen doesnt make it 60 fps lol

    • Mikeherp Derp

      In your dreams, maybe.

      • Psionicinversion

witches are evil so do you like evil things?

    • Michael Norris

You are a moron..i bet you the Ps4 version will how class the Xbone version..

      • Psionicinversion

        how class?

X1 will blow the PS4 away!

        • Guest

LMAO!! We both know that the SDK will not out-power the PS4, so stop living in denial thinking otherwise☺ Next you’ll be believing in the Cloud Power

          • Psionicinversion

Of course it will didnt you know the SDK is called the Sony Destroyer Kit… with a name like that it simply cant fail!

Look at Titanfall its currently at 792p or someat, with the new Sony Destroyer Kit watch it bounce to 1080p 60fps glorious detail…

speaking of the beta hope i get in then can see if its going be to be fun enough, from the videos it looks to easy to kill titans at least if you get close enough.

never played CoD or BF multiplayer but BF’s shanghai map sealed the deal with me for BF loved every minute of it… till the game released then somehow became the buggiest map on there

I wonder when this interview took place. Maciej Szcześnik quit his job at CD Projekt Red well over a week ago and joined a company called “11 bit studios”. When I asked him bout his career move he specifically said he wasn’t able to work for CD Projekt Red any further, but he didn’t feel he abandoned his old team cause his work was “almost done”. If this indeed is true then I wouldnt be surprised seeing it released in September or October this year. He claimed he was looking for a new adventure, but honestly I believe there must be a lot of money involved cause it seems like an odd career move if you consider his specific abilities and interests.
It was not just him leaving by the way, he took Marek Ziemak, who I don’t know really well, with him.
Furthermore, he let slip that the Witcher 3 wasn’t the end of the series, but just the end of the Geralt centred storyline. But I don’t know for sure if that was already made public in earlier statements.
Either way, with or without Maciej, I think the Witcher 3 will be stunning and this is one of the few games on the PS4/ One I’m really looking forward to in 2014.

  • Mikeherp Derp

Another PR non-statement. If devs take advantage of PS4′s power it will run better in some way.

  • Jan Compaf

yes yes , we heard this before , “they both look great because we want to sell our game on both platforms equally, no way PS4 is more powerfull than XBONE” , more proof PS4 will be held back by XBONE developers because afterall , they want to sell their game on XBONE aswell

  • Matt Dickinson

We sure do need a lot of reassuring :(

  • Nicholas Perry

Go crazy? Do you mean that insane sharpening filter you have over the graphics? I hope there is an option to disable that on consoles. The sharpening filter in TW2 was awful. It’s just a poor mans way of making up for poor texturing.
