New Xbox One Update Removes the Hated Sharpening Filter; Screenshots Inside

by on February 14, 2014 6:06 PM 58

Apparently the new Xbox One February update rolled out today removed one of the most criticized “features” that the console had at launch, the filter that made everything look overly sharpened when a lower native resolution was upscaled to 1080p.

The improvement is currently being reported by several users over at NeoGaf, and our writers that own an Xbox One also have noticed a difference. At long last everything should look softer on Microsoft’s new console, so if you still haven’t, you should really update your Xbox One as soon as possible.

In the gallery below you can see a few screenshots of Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct and Call of Duty: Ghosts taken after the update (courtesy of NeoGaf users GSY Miguel and John Caboose), and edges definitely look quite a lot softer with the games’ antialiasing showing a much more effective performance. If you want to see the difference, at the bottom of the post there’s a screenshot of Killer Instinct taken before the update.

Titanfall Producer Drew McCoy also confirmed the change.

This should also make the scaler much better.

Looks like the good folks Microsoft weren’t joking when they teased that the new update would include a surprise.

    About damn time!

  • John Slate

Sorry to go off-topic, but I have never played DR3 or seen it in person being played. But checking out these pictures, are they truly indicative of what it looks like in person? These pictures look like they came from the Xbox360 version. The first picture in particular since theres only a few zombies on the screen, it looks as if they come from an OG Xbox Resident Evil game.

    • Jessie Bristol

Closer to the end of the game, streets are littered with hundreds of zombies. But, yeah, definitely not indicative of next-gen visuals.

    • delsin row

yes.thats a piece of microsoft. you can buy dead rising3 on the 8gen instead of playing it on xbox360

    • Jessika S.

It’s not the best looking game but it is a lot of fun specially with friends, the streets are filled with Zombies and you can pretty much do anything to them kill them in a variety of ways. It’s something you have to play or maybe watch a video on YouTube.

      • Iucidium

        Sooooo…
        Its Dead Rising 2 then?

    • bozlr

DR3 looks much worse in these shots than it does on my system, like their AA is somehow cranked down. This is probably the difference between moving images on a 1080P HDTV and bright still pictures viewed on a higher res PC screen.

      • Mikeherp Derp

Smear your monitor with vaseline to get the same effect.

        • Psionicinversion

hey i figured id target this at you cu you have the most insight BUT all upsaclaers have the same problem….
i watch Hackers from ther 80/90′ cant remember but its my favirite film when and its so good BUTthe upscaleer not sure if its bluray player (might hav better harwdware) the picture overly saturated and fluid in a reallbackwards kind of way. Its like swimming backwards with a binoculars asnd its genrally rubbish. im no saying its all X1 but some of it must be

          • Mikeherp Derp

Some cheap blu-ray players or TVs have terrible upscalers in them. Xbox and PS4 both have pretty good upscalers.

    • Mikeherp Derp

Most Xbox One games look pretty bad on a properly calibrated IPS-PC monitor especially if you’re sitting close to it like at a desk. On someone’s blurry TV from a couch not so much.

      • Psionicinversion

funiet thing i saw was seiki tv/monitors ans talked about it with some guy at work he goes oo 4K i was like yeah know any decent monitors, hes like yeah seiki, so i watched saome seiki tv/monitor for a start is not good plus there all 30hz on the cheap seiKI monitor needs be 60hz at least, need a gamingmonitor not a chicken ruin monitor

        • Mikeherp Derp

True master race PC gamers run 120-144hz monitors, especially upcoming G-Sync monitors. 1080p @ 144 FPS on Ultra settings is where it’s at.

          • Psionicinversion

G-Sync doesnt really work that much on those hz levels, its much better at smoothing out frames at low levels. Ive seen video of 120hz monitors with g-sync and the reviewers say its not really noticeable. To have the advantage needs be 30 to 50-60 fps/hz. which if the game is heavy duty enough thats all youll be getting anyway so thats where it makes the best improvement and most people agree it is really good, but atm carries an extra $100 price tag and is proprietary nvidia technology cus it needs be supported on the gfx card to.

AMD got a software solution called freesync but only works if the montior supports v_blank (think it is) and will be standard in the upcoming display port 1.3 specification. Its from VESA (not sure which revision of that standard it is maybe 1.2 or someat but lots of monitors dont support it atm). being standard dp 1.3 should see upcoming monitors supporting it then can see which is the best implementation. Nvidia hardware solution probably best but if freesync isnt to far behind then maybe worth looking into that

          • PejHod

And also don’t get laid. EVER.

      • Psionicinversion

ya know i will say to yiou know id o think the PS4 is going to win this console generation, BUT dont count the X1 completely out… itll never perform as well as a PS4 but itll put in a solid effort to give as alittle advantage as poss, after all MS are software kings if any one can do it MS can. First partys will be there, but 3rd party id give another 2 years that see what they can do. I.e. 3 yar game cycyloe last year (knows what console spcs) to 2 years dev well see

Oh 3 year game cycle purely sel;fish CoD… the only studio i trust to put out a good game is treyarch, from the black ops.. rest no hopes for

        • Iucidium

“MS are software kings if any one can do it MS can.”
*shudder* you probably used windows to type that comment’

          • Psionicinversion

            you p[rolly did to

          • Iucidium

No. Haven’t used windows for years.

    • Nicholas Perry

They look that way due to poor JPG compression and low resolution actually.

      • PCS4-Box U

I wish that were true. DR3 is ugly as hell.

        • Jessika S.

It’s not the best looking but it’s also not that ugly there are worse looking games out there, looks good enough and it’s a lot of fun.

    • PCS4-Box U

It’s a very, very ugly game. It was the first XBO game i played and to say I was dissapointed would be an understatement. Forza is ugly as hell too. That’s all I’ve gotten to play thus far though.

      • avi

you think forza 5 is ugly??
um, ok…i would have understood if you just said dead rising 3, but forza 5 is probably one of the best looking racing games out there.

        • Iucidium

Yet it lacks dynamic real-time lighting, weather, night races – that game engine can’t even do real-time reflections in the damn mirrors at 60fps. Ooooh, it makes the paint look real….

          • Gamez Rule

Forza 5 doesn’t look current gen to me if being honest. More like a Forza 4.5 patch☺

  • Jessika S.

Is there a way to check for updates so that I can manually do it or do I have to wait for it?

    • Giuseppe Nelva

apparently you have to wait for it with the console off with instant-on activated. No way to do it manually.

      • Jessika S.

Alright, Thank You I guess I’ll wait. I guess it’s not as easy as maybe just saying “Xbox Update” LOL!

        • John Pombrio

Now to try to figure out if it has been updated. Anyone know what the version number turns into?

          • Giuseppe Nelva

            6.2.10542 (xb_rel_1402.140213-0115) fre

          • Guest

I did exactly what you said, I said “Xbox turn off” it went into standby mode waited about 15 to 20 minutes said “Xbox On” didn’t turn on I manually turned it on and it was updating. Did this yesterday after you told me so THANK YOU cause it worked.

    • Robbie Yarber

Make sure your Xbox is in Instant-On mode, then turn it off. It should then check for the update.

    • Jessie Bristol

If your system is in Instant-On, then turn it on, sign-in and then turn your console off. You’ll know when it is done downloading because your power brick will turn amber.

  • Ritsujun

    Dat patched bone.

  • Nicholas Perry

    Thank god.

  • You are flat out wrong

These 360 ports were never gonna show a big improvement, though at least Filler Instinct doesn’t look like ass anymore.

    • Robbie Yarber

      LOL. Filler Instinct.

      • Aidan Murphy

what did the filter do exactly? make it look like every game didn’t have AA?

        • Robbie Yarber

It over sharpened the image, as if the sharpness on your TV was turned way up.

          • Gamez Rule

Now it just looks more blurry with faded colours☺

          • Robbie Yarber

Yeah lol. I’m still gonna get it for PS4.

  • Robbie Yarber

Well, still waiting for mine to check for the update. Microsoft has a long way to go before the Xbone can compete with the PS4.

    • Psionicinversion

tbh mate you need to go with the exclusives… exclusives are ke key they arent going to be on another pltform ill give you a reality chek what i recieved 2 days ago

I saw ready to go full 4K next year 2x best graphics card and everything…

weather… 100mph winds collapsed my fence roof tiles blown off and smashed my car up windscreene put holes in my car bonnet and smashed my roof up…. although it is good to slam the competitor just take things into consideration cus at the end of the day it means nothing and there more importany thing in life tbh. little bit of slamming is cool though cus its fun lol

  • Sunnycyde

    Cool

  • Psionicinversion

Courtesy of NeoGaf… seriously is that before or after they photoshopped the image.. i tried get an account with neogaf they refused me duno why though

    • Mark

NeoGaf doesn’t allow registration from free email accounts. Also can take months to be approved.

  • Robbie Yarber

Finally got the update. Now I’m just waiting for Assassin’s Creed 4 to update so I can check if it looks any better.

  • Psionicinversion

removal of the sharpening filter = 1080p 60 fps, cus of the buses and people that want to get there and stuff (youhave your roof tiles fall off and smash ya car up you wont feel to brill either so yah

  • Robbie Yarber

Well I can confirm Assassin’s Creed 4 looks much better. It’s not as harsh anymore, much softer.

  • MrZweistein

Using Neogaf as a source is silly and lazy. You don’t know the source, you don’t know if the pictures were manipulated. If you want be real gaming journalists take your own screenshots to make up your opinion and an article.

  • Gamez Rule

Is it just me or aliasing is still a problem from what’s shown in those screen shots?

    • Iucidium

Aliasing AND screen tear are a plague on Xbox One.

      • Gamez Rule

        True.

  • Carlos Noble

Assassin’s Creed looks noticeably better now the sharpening filter is gone!

  • Howard Katz

    seems real simplified now.

  • Kelvin Roy Leek

you can have the best graphics ever ,but if the games crap makes no difference what it looks like!!!!

  • Matt Dickinson

They ought to just keep it as an option. Users like choice and trying out different settings.
