PS4 Is Selling so Much Faster than PS3, PS2 and PS1 that it’s Not Even a Competition

by on February 18, 2014 2:56 PM 69

With 5.3 million sold through to customers since its launch in November, it’s a given by now that the PS4 is selling very fast, faster than its predecessors by Sony Computer Entertainment, but just how much faster? Thanks to NeoGaf user Aquamarine, we can catch a glimpse on that thanks to the sales data over time of all four home consoles by Sony:

PlayStation:

4 months (one territory) – March 31st, 1995 – 0.85 million
10 months – September 30th, 1995 – 1.77 million
16 months – March 31st, 1996 – 4.26 million
22 months – September 30th, 1996 – 8.07 million
28 months – March 31st, 1997 – 13.50 million

PS2:

1 month (one territory) – March 31st, 2000 – 1.41 million
7 months (one territory) – September 30th, 2000 – 3.52 million
13 months – March 31st, 2001 – 10.61 million
19 months – September 30th, 2001 – 19.58 million
22 months – December 30th, 2001 – 24.99 million

PS3:

1 month – December 31st, 2006 – 1.7 million
4 months – March 31st, 2007 – 3.5 million
7 months – June 30th, 2007 – 4.2 million
10 months – September 30th, 2007 – 5.5 million
13 months – December 31st, 2007 – 10.4 million

PS4:

1 day – November 16th, 2013 – 1 million
2 weeks – December 1st, 2013 – 2.1 million
1 month – December 28th, 2013 – 4.2 million
3 months – February 8th, 2014 – 5.3 million

From the data showcased above we can gather that PS1 took ten months to sell 1.77 million units, PS2 took seven to sell 3.52 million. PS3 needed four months to move 3.5 million units.

PS4 is, for now, outpacing them all, having sold 5.3 million in just three months. Of course initial sales aren’t everything in this market, but for the moment there’s no reason on the horizon to predict a future slow down. It’ll be interesting to see where we’ll be at the end of the year, but so far so good.

I’ll say it again, this could be a 250 million console generation… or even higher depending on China and cost cutting.

So far this is just the early adopters. Due to Sony’s wise decision to use standard hardware, Sony will be able to reduce the price quickly while still maintaining a profit. So much so, that I really think the PS4 will eventually be more popular as a streaming device than as a game console.

    • Necro

      HAHAHAHAHAHAH…… Yeah no way.

      • Grant A

Just like the power house Xbox 360 would never see a majority of its users logging into netflix everyday. Wait, that totally happened, this isn’t 1999 anymore kiddo, and what ever grabs the gamer audience will bleed into the rest of consumer reality.

      • Bristow9091

By 250 million console generation he means with the PS4, XBOX One, and Wii U combined… idiot.

        • Jewy McJew

Nope, I am thinking PS4 can get there on its own. I am that crazy!

    • stealth20k

Not a chance. The PS4, X1 will be lucky to hit 100 million. That is if they are lucky. No analyst I have read is expecting 120 million each.

      • Jewy McJew

They weren’t expecting non-stop sell-throughs either. Demand is huge and everybody who has one raves about it. I think if they had the supply, they could move 30 million units this year.

        • stealth20k

Actually they were. And X1 has slowed SEVERELY.

          • Jewy McJew

I thought we were talking about the PS4, not the X1! Different beast.

      • Bristow9091

120m each would suggest there are only two consoles in the market… I’m pretty sure there are three :)

    • Mikeherp Derp

250 mil? Nope. More likely we’ll see shorter 5-6 year gens with backwards compatible AMD SoCs.

      • Jewy McJew

I happen to agree about your SoC prediction. Where we disagree is that in 5-6 years, I think Sony will be selling them like hotcakes for < $149. Millions will use it just as a streaming box.

I also think there is a good chance the PS4 could be their next portable system assuming they can lower power usage.

  • stealth20k

Selling faster, doesnt mean it will sell more in the long run. Its important to keep things in perspective.

    • Jewy McJew

True, but it doesn’t hurt :)

    • Solid Snake

True, but seeing how things currently are, and the negativity around Xbox One. Its safe to assume, PS4 will sell more than 90 million in its life time, with the amount of Xbox 360 owners switching back to PlayStation.

      • Austin McDowell

And keep in mind that it’s reaching these numbers while not even out in Japan just yet!

    • Greg Skies

good…let the hate flow through u

    • Dragon24680

Oh stealth. Did PS4 destroying your precious Wii U hurt your fanboy spirit?

    • Mikeherp Derp

Yes that’s very evident with the Xbox and Wii U that both started out okay in the first few weeks then cratered spectacularly.

      • stealth20k

This is not about other systems. Systems typical sell terribly year one. PS4 is phenomenal for bucking the trend so far.

        • Mikeherp Derp

PS4 is less supply constrained than PS2 or Wii, or those two would have easily trounced it.

    • neko working

more devs in for game :)

  • PhantomVash808

Good news for Sony. I expect sales to stay strong for at least a few more months too since the PS4 is launching in Japan soon along with March having 2 big releases for the PS4 in Infamous Second Son and MGS:GZ.

    • Grant A

This years E3 should be a sweep for them too, they have so many studios that haven’t even hinted what they are working on, and poor little xbox is going to be on damage control while trying to pay developers to cut their revenue by releasing their multiplat games on the bone. Hopefully nintendo doesn’t dig a deeper hole while the big kids are duking it out.

      • PhantomVash808

I think all 3 companies Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony will bring their A game come E3. I do agree that Sony is the most intriguing since a lot of their 1st party studios haven’t announced what they are working on plus many Japanese third party studios seem to be heavily supporting the PlayStation brand right now too.

      • Arnold Stallone

Adam sessliar is in full damage control mode /on
That ‘junk’ rated journalist and human and oxygen waste will help selling some xbox one, and will do his best to kill the next big Sony exclusive, infamous SS.

        Adam sessliar:
-May announcement: *xbox guys, calm down, wait for E3*
        - cod 720p on xbox on vs 1080p on ps4: *guys, resolution and graphics aren’t important, you know that…*
-forza5 review, that needs to drive sales: *bla bla, I’m not a car simul gamer, but cars look amazing and shinny: 5/5*, no mention of micro transactions
        - titanfall is the last joker microsoft has, to drive sales on xbox one, and it needs perfect reviews and max hype and buzz : * he makes a video on how titanfall will revolutionize fps, bla bla, and will make a final review, where he will give it a 7/5, call it best next gen game, and will beg people to go and buy an xbox one*
        - infamous second son is released : he will review it, will give it a 2.5/5, to make Sony games look as ugly and useless as him(hard mission, I know), and will justify that score by saying the city isn’t as big as gta5 one, for example. All it matters is bashing it, like most press did with knack, killzone, etc, to make the ps4 exclusives look bad, and amd xbone exclusives look amazing.

This guy is a true joke. Biased as shiit. And he looks like the guy that trip and monkey meet, later in the game, in ‘enslaved’ ps3 game.

        • shinitaru

          You mean the pig guy?

        • Mikeherp Derp

Sessler was pretty positive on the order and infamous impressions videos. You’re attacking him unfairly.

          • Rich Hutnik

Also Sessler doesn’t give used decimals in his rating. He would do 2/5 or 3/5.

        • Manoj Varughese

          Adam who?

        • DEO エリヤデボンオットリ

That dude Adam Sessler ruined the Dtoids show for me, Max Scoville n Tara Long were awesome.

  • RealityCheck2013

AMAZING really :P But then again the PS4 is brilliant :P

  • jacksjus

    Insane.

  • da Boss

It hasn’t even been released in Japan yet lol, by March it’ll be well past 6 million sales.

  • ISISSecretAgent

what a biblical beast of epic proportions

  • stealth20k

I personally think the PS4 has the potential to hit 100 million. Which would be phenominal in this age we live it. I think that and the 3DS are the only systems with the potential to do it.

    • ThePokeMaster

      The age we live in?
Even though Nintendo consoles have been on the downfall, consoles overall have been on the rise. More consoles have been sold this recent generation than the previous one, and that one sold more than the one before it as well.

      • stealth20k

Smartphones/Tablets, Thriving PC gaming, exclusives everywhere. Its a very different time.

Consoles overall have really been on the decline. PS4 has been strong but the trends are not really positive.

        • ThePokeMaster

Most of that is irrelevant, as console gaming is also thriving. I don’t think you read what I said. Consoles are not on the decline.
This past generation sold more consoles than the previous one and the one before it.

          • stealth20k

None of that is irrelevant. Console gaming is not thriving. More consoles were sold last gen but based on analysis, that trend isnt going to continue forever.

          • ThePokeMaster

Based on what analysis? Most of it is hypothetical. The trend may not continue forever, but it may continue for many years to come.
I gave you facts about what the current console situation IS, not what it could be.
Console sales have been increasing year after year.

And I said that it is irrelevant because no one who currently enjoys console/PC quality games is gonna buy a phone or tablet just to play mediocre games. The only market that could suffer is the handheld market, outside of the hardcore.

      • Mikeherp Derp

Console hardware sales are way down YOY compared to 4-5 years ago.

    • Jewy McJew

I’ll take your 100 million and double it :)

      • stealth20k

        your being ridiculous.

        • Jewy McJew

          Ridiculous like a fox!

          • Rory Breslin

200 million lol come on man. The PS2 hasn’t even sold that lol. Big playstation fan here but let’s be realistic. PS3 hasn’t even sold 100 million

          • Manoj Varughese

PS3 looks like it’ll when they’d slash the price before the autumn and keep releasing JRPGs and FIFAs. So this autumn and the next autumn would be crucial. It should have crossed past 93-94 mn.

          • http://www.Kwamejoseph.com/ ProPaperPusher

You can officially sell a Sony PS product in China. Impossibility is just another level of difficulty. So it’s not too far out the realms of reality and don’t forget India where Sony is King.

          • Jewy McJew

While I love my PS3, I don’t consider it a runaway success. It was far too expensive to manufacture, too difficult to program for, and even today it is difficult to get the cost down.

The PS4 on the other hand is one tight little package. I am shocked how much I love using it just as a netflix box… they absolutely nailed the interface.

Forget games, this is Sony’s platform to deliver content for the next 10 years. At $149, your parents will love it!

        • http://www.Kwamejoseph.com/ ProPaperPusher

Actually it is in the Realm of possibilities since China and India will be big players in the years to come. Sony has been a major player India’s gaming market in the past few years. They where games that was still made for Ps2 in India as off last year I believe.

Those two countries top 1% will spend on luxury items and video games.

    • Mikeherp Derp

100 million? Depends how long the gen goes on, but I doubt it. Console market is shrinking not expanding, even with PS4′s larger share of the market.

  • Digital Hokage

man its selling so fast imagine if their stock could keep up with the demand

    • Jewy McJew

That is the problem… I think people would be shocked how many they could sell if supply side wasn’t an issue.

      • Mikeherp Derp

Well you had some rabid animal xtards shrieking and jeering because they both started out even in 2013. This was only due to supply constraints and the initial Xbox fanboy frenzy, of course. Once Xbox started cratering in sales last month and this month, they shut up fast.

  • watcher278

Blame the 10 year lifecycle of the last console generation..

  • LiquidSword

    WOW

  • PrinceHeir

    let’s go Sony!

  • jakdripr

I wonder why. I mean it’s-in my honest opinion-the best console on the market right now, however there’s barely anything to play on it. Makes you wonder how much higher the numbers will be when the big games start dropping.

  • personality

    ooooooooh Sony Kill Em

  • Manoj Varughese

The prophecy has come true. The beast has indeed arisen.

  • Manoj Varughese

no wonder there is limited stock almost everywhere…The console king PS2 had modest numbers

  • Chiekotz

    Yey!!! Playstation FTW :)

  • Jeremy

    That is amazing

  • Serialmania

I’m pretty sure there are a lot of people like me that didn’t get PS4 yet but will get in within 6 months…..

  • Grimmjow Jaggerjack

If they could keep the PS4 in stock they could reach 8 million by april…maybe 9

  • dgarra

Well no joke, they actually have stock of the PS4, this wasn’t the case with the PS2 at all, and the PS3 was ridiculously expensive.

  • DEO エリヤデボンオットリ

Well damn…that’s definitely good news for SCE and us gamer’s,try harder mobile market. Expecting allot of good things to come out of this. (ી(΄◞ิ౪◟ิ‵)ʃ) Good job!!!
