Sony Japan President: Japanese Developers Want to “Bet on PS4″ due to High Sales in the West

by on February 20, 2014 6:27 PM 24

We’re only a day away from the release of the PS4 in Japan and Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia President Hiroshi Kawano is confident about the console’s future and the support it’s going to receive from Japanese developers, as he told Game Watch in an interview:

Kawano-san explained that the amazing initial sales of the console and the momentum that keeps the numbers growing are creating a sense of excitement in Japan that has spread not only between users, but also between developers, that are now saying “let’s make a game for the PS4.”

Both strong sales and the ability to play remotely on PS Vita are giving developers a feeling of safety and the companies that say “I want to bet on PS4″ or “let’s make a game quickly” is increasing steadily.

Kawano-san also mentioned that while the PS4 is aimed mainly to core gamers, it’s also important for it to be an entertainment hub in order to grow a wider fanbase, for instance with anime streaming and interactive educational content.

He also feels that on the side of proper games it may possible to offer various forms of entertainment that include gaming-like characteristics.

One thing is for sure: tomorrow will be a big day for gamers in Japan. Quite a few are already lined up in front of the biggest electronic stores that are said to have day one stock, and pre-orders seem to be considerable, at least from what Kawano-san said himself in previous interviews.

    Japan I Love

Developers also said the same thing about 3DS, yet I see every Japanese dev moving mobile, it sucks.

I will believe it when I see it. Presidents/CEO’s especially of Sony and Nintendo, have a way of exaggerating.

    • NeoTechni

In fairness, nintendo ceos like to blatantly lie. Downplaying the significance and impact of processing power, online, HD, etc. They like to stick their fingers in their ears and ignore the world around them, cause their ego is so large they think the gaming world is just nintendo and everyone else is just wrong, including the gamers

      • stealth20k

Same with Sony, same with microsoft. However in 2013, Nintendo sold the most software and hardware globally so they did do some things right. Sony has started right with the PS4.

        • punkchobit

Sony hasn’t lied to downplay the significance of any of those things.

“Nintendo sold the most software and hardware globally so they did do some things right”

          Sales don’t equal quality.

          • stealth20k

except the fact that Nintendo also had the highest reviewed games, but that isnt the point. CEO’s say the same line every launch lol.

Nice it looks like Japanese developer support will come faster on the PS4 than it did to the PS3.

Told ya so..(not directly replying to you). My predictions are right once again. More exclusive content coming to PS4 because of strong sales. PS2 all over again.

      • Mikeherp Derp

PS2 sales won’t be repeated, even if Sony captures more of the market, the market itself is shrinking. Market crash and devs going under is still coming, sadly.

        • mikeslemonadeFromN4G

Well you are entitled to your prediction but it has no base. Last gen was bigger than the previous gen. More people on earth and more people with advancement in technology that can utilize the PS4. More territories like China are in the market. When I mean “PS2″, I mean sales of 120 million. PS2 sold another 40 million in the generation after. And my last point is Wii U and X1 are doing terrible job of making themselves viable options for customers, so therefore more people will buy PS4 by default.

This is why I always buy playstation because you get to enjoy the best of both worlds. All the western and japanese games for you to enjoy. You can’t get that from nintendo, xbox, or even the pc.

    • Ritsujun

      Truth.

    • Stranger On The Road

Actually there are plenty of 3DS and Xbox 360 exclusive Japanese games; some of them do make it over to PS Vita and the PS3. Heck, there is even a Kinect dancing game where you get to dance with an Onee-san. Although the PS platforms being regional free is a big plus for me.

Also the PC is a major platform in Japan where all the eroge get released; although I can’t really say exclusive since many of those get converted in a galge and released on the console.

Current the Wii U is the only one left behind in regards to JRPG, with ‘X’ being the only one planned for it… so far [are they other that I missed?]. I keep wondering if Nintendo should try to release a HD edition of Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story and Pandora’s Tower on the Wii U, plus added extra content to them. This, I believe, will keep some of their fans -including myself- happy until ‘X’ comes out.

      He’s right
Nintendo – Poor western 3rd party support but good Japanese 3rd party support.
Xbox – Great western 3rd party support but poor Japanese 3rd party support.
Pc – Great western 3rd party support and has Japanese 3rd party support but most of it are usually niche titles. You can’t play Yakuza, Latest Final Fantasy, Persona, Ni No Kuni, Tales, etc… on a pc.

      Amen

Guess this means E3 we’ll see lots of upcoming RPGs, Figthers, and 3rd person Action Adventure games.

They want to please us western gamers? Make the Japanese games looking Japanese again!! Yes, especially Final Fantasy. We have got the western developers for the western style.
