Fans Camping for a PS4 in Tokyo For Three Days; First Customer to Be Determined by Lottery

The launch of a new PlayStation console is a big event for many Japanese fans, and for some it’s so big that they’ll camp outside of Sony Computer Entertainment’s HQ in Ginza for Three days.

Reports on the first fan to set camp in front of the door are a bit conflicting. Some say the college student from Kashima, in the Ibaraki Prefecture (109 Km from Tokyo), has been sitting there since 11 AM on the 19th, some since 1 PM. Since then quite a few others joined in a small gathering that gradually became bigger and bigger.

Having gotten there first, though, won’t necessarily grant him the right to be the first to purchase the coveted console. Sony distributed numbered tickets to the first 30 brave (and maybe a little crazy) fans that reached the premises, and the first to hold the blue box above his head in triumph will be determined by lottery when the count down will reach zero in just a few hours.

As a funny side note, the Tokyo-based idol unit “game girls” was also spotted between the campers, as you can see in the first picture of the gallery.

Below you can see a few pictures from the field. We don’t yet know who will “win” this little ironman competition, but considering that Tokyo is freezing at the moment, they all deserve an applause.

The pictures above are courtesy of Famitsu, Sankei Biz, Nikkan Sports and Twitter users Yasumi Matsuno (yes, that Yasumi Matsuno), ihsotihiGNITED, Soul Sacrifice and 31Tron.

i bet on 1 million ps4’s to be sold in 24 hours

    • MrFinalgamer

i highly doubt that. especially because of how pro-handheld japan is these days

    • Necro

Not going to happen. It wont even sell a million in Japan by the end of March. At most 600,000 by the end of march.

      • Jeff Pee

1 Million seem pretty high. We need to remember that Japan is no longer the giant market it use to be. In reality, selling 600000 would make it a smashing success! I’ll keep my expectations a little lower 400000-50000 by end of March… Of course 1 Million would be amazing, but I think that’s a long shot, would love to be proven wrong! I would love it if Japan fell in love with consoles again, not just handhelds, bring back those weird japan games and JRPG’s PLEASE!

People don’t realize how much smartphones and tablets have a stranglehold on the Japan gaming market now.

    • Anders

They don’t have a million consoles to sell. Maybe the could sell the consoles if they had that many, but they don’t.

      • TehP0werOfTehCloudz

Oh k thx for the info

      • BalramRules

It is said that they have 1.1million stocked, so they have much to sell, but I don’t think that they’ll reach that, 600,000 was a prediction made by an IGN Presenter (I think Colin), and I’d say that’s pretty accurate, as all of those who were desperate for a PS4 will have had it imported from the west anyway.

        • Bankai

It’s very unlikely that anyone outside of a handful of people imported a PS4.

        • Anders

Where did you hear about that 1.1 million?

          • BalramRules

I recall at one point Sony announced (or someone else did) that they had 1 month’s supply of consoles prepped for launch (which is 1.1mil), I can’t recall where I found it again, so I could just be imagining things. :p
            (Don’t think I did though).

    • Mikeherp Derp

      Too optimistic. 300-500k.

      • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

        I bet 1.5 million.

PS4 Two Day Sales in Japan (Famitsu): 322,083

  • Terramax

The cynic in my can’t help but think this may be a marketing stunt. I’m not sure if the Ginza area would allow people to set up camp in such a way, considering the tidy and expensive area it is.

  • Wargreymon559 .

Cant wait till they start streaming Yakuza Ishin on Twitch ;D

  • Stranger On The Road

Is there no event for the Japanese launch? I was looking forward to seeing something that would give the Italian launch a run for its money.

Any way, I wonder what game the guys/gals with the PS Vita are playing.

    • Dollow Rlance

      They are playing Soul Sacrifice

    • Anders

There is an event in Ginza with people like Kojima and Yoshida.

      I’ve just completed Tearaway.

      • Langkasuka

Are you actually in line? Do you have Twitter I can follow? :3

        • Anders

I’m not in line I have my own Made in Japan PS4, I’m sitting in Denmark currently looking out at the cloudy weather.

I do have Twitter @gamermller I write in Danish and English but I mostly use it to follow peple like Kojima and Shu.

    • Anders

You should be able to follow the livestream here

  • Bankai

I expect Sony to sell between 900K and 1M over the next 2 days.

    • Mikeherp Derp

Nah. They probably don’t even have that many stockpiled, let alone willing customers.

      • Bankai

All my predictions have been right so far, so I’m standing by this one. A lot of people seem to be writing off Japan just because they prefer handhelds, the market and demand is still there, so the numbers might just surprise everyone.

And I’m confident that Sony has at least one million PS4’s ready, so I’m not worried.

        • Mikeherp Derp

What other “right” predictions did you make?

Sony has sold too much already to have stockpiled that many units, they can only manufacture so many per month. I think they’ve stockpiled 500k at most, and will sell about 300-500k but it’s hard to tell with the anemic console market in Japan.

I would not be surprised at all to see 3DS+DS outsell PS4 in March in Japan. Handhelds are god in Japan.

PS4 Two Day Sales in Japan (Famitsu): 322,083

      Oh so wrong. lol

  • orangpelupa

soooo the one that win the lottery will get FREE PS4 or they still need to pay for it?

    • Giuseppe Nelva

he gets the right to purchase it first, or so sony says, but you never know, he might get a surprise.

  • islan

These kinds of launches should make the entire order of purchases lottery based. That would go a long way in discouraging people from showing up 3-days early.
