PS4: PlayStation Japan Honcho: “We’ll Do Our Best” for it to Sell as Much as PS2

The PS4 seems to be a success for Sony so far, but whether or not it’ll manage to match the massive popularity of the PS2 it’s still very much up in the air. Yet Sony Computer Entertainmnet Japan and Asia President Hiroshi Kawano is not giving up on the idea, as he told Inside Games in an interview.

As we all know, unfortunately the sales of the PS3 didn’t even get near the sales of the PS2. It mat be difficult for a home console now, but I think we shouldn’t say it’s impossible unconditionally. However, I believe it’s possible to expand the popularity of the PS4 by providing a rich gaming experience and making use of the fusion of network service and high performance that is possible only on home consoles.

Kawano-san also continued mentioning that Sony is going to keep up the PR effort to spread the news about the unique features of the console like remote play, as there are still people that don’t know about those.

When we talk on whether it’ll match the sales of the PS2 numerically, we’ll have to do our best in the future.

Pushing the PS4 to the overwhelming level of popularity of the PS2 is definitely no small task, and Kawano-san and his colleague will definitely have to try their best. It’s good to know that “providing an rich gaming experience” is still front and center in their plans. That was, after all, what really made us love the PS2.

I hope more variety of games come out soon.

  • stealth20k

    Those are unrealistic expectations

    • Jewy McJew

oh thee of little faith… 🙂

      • stealth20k

        oh thee of little reality.

        • Jewy McJew

So far so good. PS4’s biggest strength will be it’s ability to reduce it’s price by 30% every year.

In a couple of years, the PS4 will be that affordable streaming box that also happens to play “games”.

  • PrinceHeir

    More variety please!

Tons of JRPGs, Hack and Slash, Beat Em’ Ups, SHUMPS, Mech Games, ADV/VN, Fighting Games, Arcade Style Driving Games, Platformers please!

I’m getting sick and tired of sports, shooters, sports, shooters, SHOOTERS, SPORTS.

Even though i’m excited as hell for games like Destiny and the like, other genres needs to be explore too as well!!

    • Matt Dickinson

you’re tired of shooters but you want “shmups”!

      • Duo Maxwell

        And they are related, how?

        • Matt Dickinson

          I wasn’t talking to you!

          • Yldefonso Then

But you should answer the question because you’re talking about one thing that has nothing to do with the other, so yes, he had the right to come at you, like it or not. Playing Call Of Duty and Gears of War isn’t the same as playing R-Type, Gradius or Raiden.

          • Matt Dickinson

            Blah blah blah, so serious

      • Yldefonso Then

Yeah, as in space ship shooters, completely different league from 1st/3rd person shooters.

        • Matt Dickinson

I wasn’t talking to you either!

          • Yldefonso Then

But I’m talking to you, whether you like it or not, dumbass.

          • Matt Dickinson

You’re right there’s not many scrolling shooters any more although there was R-Type Dimensions (remake of Rtype) released on PSN recently, and Velocity 2X is coming out this summer

    • Gariya

THIS. To hell with brown grey dudebro shooter galore.

      We need diversity.

    • Mikeherp Derp

Most of those died out because of increasing budgets and declining sales.

    • Marquis Regalia

This, personally I think the reason PS2 succeeded was because of the vast amount of games. Everytime I went to my local shop I would almost always leave with 3-4 games and all of them differing in genre. Though the environment now is different and there’s a more push towards “casual” that can’t always be bad. I mean casual gamers tend to want more variety and they seldom stick to one genre though they do tend to play less per day. I think the PS3 generation lacked this diversity, I really didn’t mind shooters but every now and then when I checked its always shooters being released. or another ac game ._.’ I hope the indie scene improves this too. Idm indies but the quality needs to step up a bit

  • Cyrus

If they could keep like 80 to 90% of their games exclusives to ps4 then probably but right now its too unrealistic.

    • JonathanisPrimus

In Japan, the third party games are pretty much defacto exclusives due to Xbox’s irrelevance.

      • Mikeherp Derp

Most of the time they don’t even bother with the 360 version of multiplats in Japan.

  • JonathanisPrimus

    Oh wait, you’re serious? Ahahahahahaha.

Do they expect Vita to hit PSP’s numbers in Japan too?

    • stealth20k

They actually did say that is what they wanted.

    • yes1

In the quotes in the article, the Sony guy doesnt say that he expect the PS4 to sell as much as the PS2. He just say that he wouldnt rule it out 100% and that they will do their best. Or in other words, he hopes that the PS4 will sell as much as the PS2, but its not something that he seem to be very likely to happen.

  • Duo Maxwell

I just hope the mid-size games will appears on the PS4 with the open of the indie scene. Developers shouldn’t chase that extra pixel or realistic texture, and just go with what’s the best for them. I’d pay for some Atelier games on the PS4.

    PS4: It Changes Everything

At the rate PS4 is selling and demanded it can sell as well as the PS2 if not surpass it.

  • Craig Sloan

I’ll say it competes more with the PS1 sales.

  • James

The Japs just don’t seem that bothered about consoles anymore, it’s more portables over there from what I’ve read.

But I do think the PS4 will surpass PS2 in worldwide sales.

    • Anime10121

You know the PS2 sold over 155 million consoles right? I’m sure PS4’ll be a big success, but I dont see ANY console ever reaching that amount again, the PS2 was damn near a monopoly as far as exclusive console games went, no other (home) console has come close, and doubtly ever will to the PS2 in any of the factors that made it a surefire success.

      • James

Yeah I know the history, and there’s a good chance I could be wrong but they’ve sold a lot more PS4 than they have PS2 in the same time period.

If I’m wrong, I’m wrong but we’ll see.

        • Anime10121

But they also sold more PS3’s than they did PS2’s around this time frame. Newer consoles have a tradition of being more front loaded than the last, just because of the fact that each gen more and more people are being turned into “gamers” and want the newest toy. I hope PS4 sees a success something similar to PS2 (as its the system I chose to buy), but I’m not really expecting it…

      • Jecht_Sin

That isn’t impossible since the competition is struggling already. After all The 7th generation sold more than 260 million consoles. And the PS4 already sold more than the Wii U which came out 1 year earlier and it won’t take much for it to double to Xbone global sales (only about 1 million to go).

  • benbenkr

Before spreading the unique features of the PS4 in advertising, how about you guys bring the promised features that was announced with the PS4 reveal last year?

Like, seriously… where the eff’ is the suspend/resume feature? It’s not a difficult implementation, so do it already!

    • Anime10121

I generally agree, but honestly, you dont know how difficult it is to actually implement said features, so just wait a while, I’m sure they’ll come shortly 🙂

      • benbenkr

        I do.

The issue is the time to QA test the feature, which I understand. But damn, that feature was advertised a year ago… so, 1 year is more than enough time for a feature which is already available on PCs and mobile platforms.

And it’s not like it is a groundbreaking feature. It’s something essential which has been around for a very, very, very long time.
