PS4 Finally Selling Out at Japan’s Major Retailers, Second Shipment Already Coming Tomorrow

by on February 24, 2014 6:28 AM 77

The PS4 launched in Japan on Saturday, and it didn’t immediately sell out at the biggest local retail chains. This caused a wave of somewhat alarmist articles and comments, some of which called the console’s Japanese launch “muted” or even a flop. Looks like they were a bit premarture, as the stock has been gradually but steadily running out over the weekend.

Amazon Japan was the first to run out on Sunday morning, followed by Edion and Rakuten, where allocations have died up yesterday night. At last even the major retailer Yodobashi Camera has now run out of stock online, with only the Niigata store between the 21 of the chain still showing availability over the counter (as you can see from the handy table included at the bottom of the post).

Apparently, though, Sony Computer Entertainment isn’t staying idle, and is ready to replenish the supply chain. Yodobashi reports that a new batch of consoles will be available tomorrow online, and on the 26th in most stores.

While there was no instant sellout, probably due to the fact that many customers were compelled to preorder online to avoid being left out (it sold out five times in a row when it was made available on the web), and to the shopping habits of the Japanese, that are steadily shifting towards online purchases, it’s doubtless that most units are being sold, and not many are left on the shelves.

We’ll have a more precise idea on overall sales on Wednesday with the Media Create hardware chart, but the situation doesn’t seem nearly as bad as some would like us to believe.

From what I am told, there are still a lot of units on the shelves, but my contacts seem to think its selling rather well, so maybe pictures are misleading.

    • Giuseppe Nelva

I’m sorry, but your “contacts” have very little on actual hard data provided directly by retailers :D

      • stealth20k

yep, they are only Japanese buyers who go into specific stores so they do not have the entire picture.

I think the system must be selling at least decently, it is brand new.

      • Terramax

Well, speaking as someone that lives in Japan, I was in Akihabara on Saturday and there wasn’t any sort of rush for anyone to buy the console. It was strikingly really quiet when I was there.

There is very little advertisement for the console overall, and there doesn’t appear to be any particular must have game that Japanese gamers want to rush out and buy they console for.

It’s probably selling steadily, but it’s unlikely it caused anywhere near the kind of crazy sales the PS2 or Wii likely did back in their respective launches.

Here are some pics, taken from my Vita, on launch day, around 11:30am Saturday.

        • stealth20k

Yeah that is what i am hearing.

          • cozomel

And you stop listening to those voices in your head. Who are you contacts? come on give names, prove it

          • stealth20k

            You sound so angry.

          • cozomel

So in other words, you’re angry. Cuz there was nothing “angry” about that post. Yup, you’ve confirmed it, you’re sensitive. And i love how you didnt answer the question. And p.s. work on that anger issue of yours, its starting to spill out

          • KingDadXVI

You seem to be the sensitive one defending console sales in a country that you don’t live in just because it is the only way you can justify you console preference.

          • shinitaru

No need to defend anything, it’s sold well in every country. If it doesn’t sell out in Japan at launch, so what? It certainly did here.
You seem to be pretty sensitive to our enthusiasm, could it be that is the only way you can justify YOUR console purchase?

          • cozomel

Says the extremely defensive and sensitive xbot who is known to be one of the worst fanboys on N4G. My comment seems to have bothered you, so i would say that shows sensitivity. Sorry jack, but you’re a sensitive girl

        • cozomel

What part of most japanese buy their stuff online arent you getting?

    • No Way

Let me guess, your “contacts” are invisible to other people, and only you hear them in your head?

      lunatic

      • stealth20k

Don’t be that troll who only want’s attention by posting responses that are hateful.

        • cozomel

Guy, you’re on a gaming website, where you should know, taht all people do is fight like cats and dogs and you’re gonna act that sensitive over such a mild comment as that. You need to grow some thicker skin. If you want good, intellectual conversion go to a ohysics forum, cuz you aint gonna get it here or on any other site. They are all nothing bbit fanboy infestation. And my motto is, “if you cant beat em, join them”

          • Averix

Fighting like cats and dogs and demonstrating fanboy stupidity shouldn’t be acceptable regardless of what site it is. Just because it’s a gaming site doesn’t mean everyone should act like 11 year old brats.

          • cozomel

I agree, but it doesnt matter cuz we cant change it or control it. So i just roll with it. If you cant beat em, join em. So i lower myself to their standards and stupid away. Its quite fun actually, very freeing, you should try it. Unshackle yourself from the shackles of dignity and join in the mudfest

          • shinitaru

“Its quite fun actually, very freeing, you should try it.”

I do that too sometimes, but I don’t find it fun at all. I pride myself on my ability to get my point across, but if I’m taken there that usually means that I have failed.

          • cozomel

Not me, why even dignify these animals with legitmate responses? They dont deserve it, they are fools, and i’d be a fool to, to treat it any other way. I used to try and talk with these people and reason with them, but they ridicule you. So screw that, you act like an idiot then I’ma treat ya like an idiot

          • shinitaru

            You’re probably right

      • cozomel

        i thought the same thing

  • Marquis Regalia

Well one can’t really call it a “flop or not” unless one knows how much the supply was. For all we know Sony improved the supply side compared to the western release so that people won’t be frustrated about having to wait weeks to get one. Alarmists lels, sounds like people who have nothing else to do

    • cozomel

It would be nice if we had all that information so we can make much better guesses as to whats going on, but they never give us that info, so instead everyone resorts to assumptions and agendas

      • Averix

Exactly what’s going on. Wait until some definitive numbers come out. I’m sure Sony will announce something shortly too. Although, that will have to be “de-marketized” to learn anything real from it.

      • Marquis Regalia

True true. But personally as a consumer the only thing I really care about are releases for my console :D Sales #’s are interesting and my curiosity at times do get to me. But as long as a steady stream of games come I say meh just let me play

  • Chris99

    b…b…but… Japan is handheld country.

    • Terramax

This is very true. Which is I’m hoping that, if anything, the PS4 will boost sales of the Vita.

    • Bankai

Consoles are still very popular there, they just prefer handhelds.

    • Negi Springfield

Consoles are making its come-back in Japan.

It`s just that Handhelds been laying there dominating for quite some while.

  • Blue Gum

Wait; I thought Media Create numbers released on mon/tues, now you saying we have to wait til weds?! I need my fix, man.

  • cozomel

Honestly, I didnt think it was gonna sell big numbers in Japan. When all the fanboys where claiming a million i would just chuckle in my head. I thought 500k at most, if not less. Now Im starting to think 250k~
Japan just isnt on the same wavelength as the rest of us westerners. They like small, cute things.

    • uptownsoul

Oh the first media create will be better than 250k…I put it at 350k minimum. The Wii U did 308k and I’m betting on it being more popular from the gate.

      • cozomel

like i said, they like small cute things, and Nintendo is considered cute. I think its stupid but thats what that country likes

        • uptownsoul

But the PS2 (600K in first 2 days; Japan’s biggest launched console) wasn’t Nintendo and was definitely bigger than all handhelds before or after.

  • PatcherStation

With the Japan launch, I bet the PS4 hits over 10 million units this year. I own a PS4 and will be looking to get a One in the future. But the One not doing too good is a bonus for future One owners. A probable price drop. If both consoles equalled each other for sales, there wouldn’t be a price drop for years. One store has dropped the One price to £399 (from £429), but that’s a no brainer. Looking at the PS3 in Japan, sales could’ve been better. The PS4 may do better. I don’t think it’s been a sell out in Japan. Most future PS4 owners in Japan will probably wait until a beast of a game is released. The One on just over 3 million units, they’ve lost the race, unless Bill Gates & Co. bring the One down to £299.

    • RoadShow

U better off getting a PC. $110 per year just to play online and many Xbox exclusives not exclusive and all game under performing on x one.

  • RoadShow

I bet Japan is another 1.5 to 2 million consoles over the weekend. We will see soon enough.

I know some were pissed about the delayed launch but people need to understand that was a great tactical move and get over it Japan. You were first on all past 3.

    • Anime10121

There is no way in hell it’ll do 1.5 OR 2 million in a week in Japan. Their console market just aint big enough anymore…

      • RoadShow

I don’t agree. Japan has made up about 1/3 of PS3 sales for quite a long time.

        • mikeslemonadeFromN4G

Initial shipment is reported to be 350,000. By now the PS4 is unoffcially the #1 current gen system because that should be enough to pass the Wii U.

And yea the sales aren’t as high of a rate as I thought but WiiU and X1 would do anything to sell as well as the PS4 just did.

        • Anime10121

How do you figure? PS3 worldwide Sales 80 million, Japan Sales 10 million (averages)

Japan hasnt EVER sold over a million home consoles of anything over a single week as far as I can remember, so we have no reason to believe it’ll do that in a single week for PS4. Now if you had said over its first year or so on the market, then I’d agree fully with you, but first week? lolnope

          • RoadShow

I wasn’t talking about overall sales. Just for a ton of months in a row I’ve been surprised by the number of sales in Japan.

    • PatcherStation

No way will it hit that number in Japan in such as short space of time. Like the PS3, the PS4 will probably drag in Japan. The last time Japan went mental about a Sony console was the PS2.

      • cozomel

patcherstation, crapbox, consoles kiddies are so cute

    • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

lol Keep dreaming! Japan selling another 1.5 to 2 million? You’re delusional if you think that’ll happen. That’d require that 2.4 out of every 100 people purchase the console. And in a country where hand-held and mobile gaming is the leading platform? KEEP. DREAMING.

PS4 sold well no doubt, but North America is the largest market for gaming (with a population of 469+ million) it “only” sold 1 million in the first 24 hours… Less than 0.23 of every 100 people purchasing the console in NA… And that’s in a market where console gaming is thriving!

The PS4 is going to sell great in Japan (easily better than the Wii U and the Xbox One (probably combined)), but look at the handheld* sales over there compared to any other console…

PS4 probably sold 100,000 – 250,000 units in the first 24 hrs on the Japanese market. It might make it to 350,000 within the first week or two, but not a single unit more.

*not including Vita… Because lol Vita.

      • RoadShow

Well I could be wrong but I’ve seen decent sales come out of Japan in the past.

        • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

Well I could be wrong, but I’ve seen decent sales come out of the Wii brand in the past.

If were using the past was an indicator, the PS3 would’ve outsold the Wii, the Xbox 360 wouldn’t’ve been any kind of competition to either the Wii or the PS3, the Wii U wouldn’t be the worst selling console in decades, and the Vita wouldn’t be the worst selling handheld in decades… As it turns out? Not the case.

          Stop making yourself look foolish.

          • RoadShow

You don’t even make sense. Sony is a major brand in Japan and Japan isn’t as small as you act in gaming. Yes handhelds are more popular in Japan but yeah consoles are popular as well.

Stop making yourself look like a douche.

          • RoadShow

Oh and you have some shit on your avatar.

          • cozomel

Take it easy princess, he’s right you’re looking like a douche, douchie

          • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

lol You’re one to talk. I see you all over every discuss comment section making yourself look quite the douche.

      • Jack

Population of NA is 313m. Close.

        • KingDadXVI

He was counting Mexico, USA, and Canada.

          • cozomel

oh no, not you, you’re a nut! help! help, help, he’s crazy!

        • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

So apparently “North America” consists solely of the United States of America. F*ck Canada and Mexico.

      • Jecht_Sin

The PS4 sold 250K console in the launch week-end in UK only. And UK is less than half the population of Japan. Other then a former Xbox territory. Unlike, obviously.. Japan! :D

        http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-12-02-playstation-4-uk-launch-sales-are-over-250k

I always said about 500K in Japan in the first 24 hours. I stick with it. Let’s see the official numbers.

        • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

That’s reasonable. I have no quarrel with those numbers… but 1.5 – 2 million? lol no.

          • Jecht_Sin

Yeah. Using the MS terminology I was “slightly” wrong. lol.

Still 4 times the PS3 sales at launch. I had to check that number in advance. I didn’t know the PS3 launch wasn’t so impressive in Japan.

          • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

PS2 was still quite formidable in that market at that time. I mean, they only stopped manufacturing it until only a couple years ago. :P

      • cozomel

        “Because lol Vita.”
I hope you feel the same way when the X1 makes the vita look like a record setter when its released

        • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

If the Xbox One were a handheld, then I’d say the exact same thing.

    • John Pombrio

Launching last in Japan was actually a savvy move by SONY. Right now the Japanese currency, the Yen, is “weak”, not worth as much compared to the dollar and other major currencies. This temporary drop in the currency adds 33% to the profit of every console sold OUTSIDE of Japan, at least as long as the currency remains weak. So sell to the rest of the world first while the profits are so high. Release in Japan last, where SONY is making the least amount of profit.
The bad news about all this is that Japan is suffering badly. In 2006, Japan had a trade surplus of $620 billion a year. This year Japan is working towards a $300 billion trade deficit due to the high cost of imports like oil due to the weak Yen. Good for SONY, bad for Japan.

      • cozomel

hey sunshine, then explain why the yen is 102 to 1 dollar? we’re talking 2 cents cheaper, thats nothing

    • cozomel

PS4 is not going to sell 1.5 to 2 million over the weekend in Japan, it’ll be lucky to sell 500k in that timeframe. If it sold 1 million in any time soon, I’d be surprised. Japan just aint that big a market for consoles anymore, they like stupid, whacky things, that are usually cute, like handhelds and Nintendo crap

    • neko working

No, but it’s already outselling xbone and there’s no hope for Xbone to grow in Japan.

    • Saad Nawaz

Yeah but what about me. I preordered my Ps4 from Amazon Germany at 26 Nov and I am still waiting for my ps4. I don’t know whom to blame Amazon or Sony but I deserve more early compare to Japanese people.

  • Manoj Varughese

    premarture?

  • Negi Springfield

Haha ! There goes to those stupid nay-sayers saying that PS4 was doomed in Japan !

  • Manoj Varughese

    Scalpers risk inbound!

  • RealityCheck2013

    I hope it sold a LOT :P

    • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

:D No doubt it sold a lot! But don’t expect anything like the NA/EU launch numbers… Japan is a MUCH smaller market.

      • cozomel

“Japan is a MUCH smaller” like your head or your dck, a-waka-waka. Sorry but you set yourself up for that one. Now go ahead and get all offended and insult away. But i am just kidding

        • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

D1ck jokes are about as middle school as it gets, so you won’t see me being offended.

    • cozomel

      I hope it sells a little :P
      Im just kidding, he he

  • Jecht_Sin

Finally? It took 3 days. “Finally” would have been the appropriate word if it was the Xbone finally selling out the 3.9 million consoles shipped! While instead 3-400 thousands of them are still collecting dust. lol.

  • ImonadrugcalledCharlieSheen

Come on, you got to give the xbots something to be hopeful about, they were posting links all over the place about how the systems weren’t sold out, it was all they had and now you take that away too, what are these poor little xbots going to do now, ha ha ha.

  • Cahone2

Good for them, but don’t forget to localize those jap games.
