PS4, Rumors

PS4 Sales Also Increased by 74% on Titanfall’s Launch Week in the UK According to Report

by on March 17, 2014 4:17 PM 83

Titanfall pushed Xbox One sales up quite radically in the UK last week, but according to a report tweeted by MCV UK Editor Christopher Dring, citing “retail sources,” PS4 sales also rose in the UK by 74% last week. The cause for the increase is quite different: Simply enough, supply constraints have been mitigated, allowing those that wanted Sony’s new console but couldn’t previously find one to finally bring it home.

Xbox One sales jumped 96% last week. But according to my retail source, PS4 sales also rose by 72.4%. That’ll be because some stock came in.

While the source isn’t officially sanctioned, and has to be counted as a rumor, it does make sense, as the console has been made available again last week at several local retailers, including the British branch of Amazon, where it’s still available now on its own.

Bravo Respawn, bravo. Better start planning for that sequel.

  • Wildboots

I couldn’t help but giggle when I saw this.

  • Ritsujun

    Dat demand.

  • PCS4-Box U

Taking bets right now that a 72.4% rise in PS4 sales is still more units than a 96% increase for XBO

    • Jeff Montgomery

Oooh thats a math problem. No thanks

    • Nick TwinkleToes Setzer

If it were true, you’d be correct, the issue is this is on random nobody using a source from which “retailer?” And based on how many of their stores? It’s simply a farce that this is even being talked about. If I were to make an unsubstantiated claim about xb1 sales i would be ridiculed, but if it supports sony I am praised?

      • PCS4-Box U

        That’s why I’m taking bets! :-)
..and don’t be such a negative Nancy, any article that has anything to do with Sony has been getting invaded by a uncanny amount of trolls as of late, #justdealwithit.

        • Redinferno124

meh I just call it entertainment as I skim the articles. It’s free.

      • Lemondish

No, we wouldn’t listen to you, and we’d be absolutely right to ignore you.

But MCV is the leading trade news and community site for all professionals working within the UK and international video games market. When their editor refers to data acquired from close sources, we should be comfortable in accepting that he has those connections and that he has relayed the exact information given to him.

    • uptownsoul

and don’t forget, this is before the release of a major PS4 game whereas XBO’s 96% is after a major release. meaning the PS4 can see a bump over 74% the following week too

      • The Wolf 47

        …While supplies last…

      • Mike

Titanfall 2 is already planed for 2017. EA confirm this a month ago. It will be on any hardware.

    • PhantomVash808

I wager the Ouya sold less than the PSP last week in the UK.

      • zeuanimals

The Ouya probably sold less than the Atari 2600 last week.

    • Michael Norris

Oh that 72.4% is much higher then MS’s 96%.

  • Nick TwinkleToes Setzer

I find it funny “abriel”, you flag for double posting articles that are about 2 different subjects, (when it is against sony) AND is fact, but then you make your own article JUST so you can double post an unverified source, author, and rumor on N4G …. I wonder why? Couldn’t be an unhealthy (and hidden) bias…. right?

    • Giuseppe Nelva

Or could it be that it’s just additional information?

      • Nick TwinkleToes Setzer

Additional? What did you add to this? It’s called double posting, and you are clearly not only a perpatrator but a hypocrite, in fact horribly so, as you report others for much smaller infractions.

Yes, let’s change the subject completely….

          • Redinferno124

I said “might” geeze. Not like either one is way ahead of the other anyway.

          • Nick TwinkleToes Setzer

You are still avoiding completely the fact I mentioned, you are just simply talking about wanting it to be true, has nothing to do with how n4g works, and has nothing to do with the hypocrisy he has shown.

          • Redinferno124

I’m just throwing my two cents in. This is something you and Giuseppe need to sort out. No need to get pissed off. If he’s wrong, someone in the comments is going to correct him. Do you have proof this is false?

          • Nick TwinkleToes Setzer

No, again didn’t comment on the validity, but on the rules of n4g, he only follows them when they suit his bias, but completely disregards, even makes work arounds using his site, when it doesn’t.

          • Redinferno124

            work arounds? Lets be reasonable.

    • neko working

      I…. LOL’d

    • blzzy_gie

Are you calling a game a silly name because it’s not available for your console ?

  • Bankai

More stock is coming in next week, as well, so sales should be steady for a bit.

  • DemonFenton

I spy a few new Xbox Mafia and/or Cult members being banned today. In relation to this post, The PS4 has been having an hard time staying on the shelf. Translation it’s being sold out every chance it’s on the shelf while Xbox Ones well that’s been collecting dust. Proof is people taking pictures at Costco and other places seeing the same trend.

    • Eagles83

Why do the sales numbers mean anything to you? Do you work for one of the companies or have investments in their stock?

      • DemonFenton

I like to see how the consoles are doing. Blocking em out means something is not right. MS didn’t give an exact number on how much got sold in the UK which is something up. So yeah I’d like to know on both hands and I have a good guess who’s doing well and who’s not.

      • Lemondish

In this case I think it has a lot to do with feeling validated and happy that a very anti-consumer service was thwarted. Sometimes as consumers we may feel like we have no actual power to show we dislike and are upset about a company’s choices. Seeing the almost unanimous backlash and the resulting impact it has had might show some people how there can still be victories in the consumer’s favour.

This was very similar to the ribbing Sony received when they launched the PS3.

        • Eagles83

I just happen to disagree with you. I didn’t think it was really anti-consumer. Sure there was DRM in the original plan but you also gained the ability to share your library with friends. It was also more convenient in that if you bought physical discs you didn’t have to put the damn things in every time you wanted to play them.

The 24 hour check in could have been adjusted to something more reasonable but it didn’t really affect me anyway as I have a stable internet connection.

But in the end the ones complaining won and Microsoft changed. Do they not get any credit for changing it to what people wanted? People have been asking Sony to change things like the glowing light on the controller and Sony just basically says deal with it. It is staying. I don’t see anybody complaining about that crap. It just seems to be a constant hate on Microsoft thing which is really getting old.

          • shinitaru

Almost as old as your constant apologies…just happen to disagree? Imagine my shock :

          • Eagles83

My constant apologies. I say good and bad things about both sides. I will respond to someone to see why they think like they do. Notice that I’m saying that I disagree and not that they are wrong. Difference.

      • neko working

well, the more the merrier. easier to find match in multiplayer game, etc…

      • John Nemesh

Speaking for myself, I am flat out ENRAGED by Microsoft’s abuse/betrayal of it’s once loyal users. Windows 8, Windows Phone, Surface, and now Xbox have all been aligned into a “Windows Everywhere” policy at MS…shoving Bing and other MS services THAT I DONT WANT down my throat, along with the “it’s not Metro” interface that I loathe. All of this would be tolerable, but they made no secret of their desire to “wall off” Windows development into their own proprietary ecosystem. Windows aside, they tried to force onerous DRM on us, and tried to force users to use their (NSA approved) spycam if they wanted to play a game. Fortunately, users were very outspokenThey SAID they backed down on the “always online” requirement…but you are still hearing reports of users locked out from SINGLE PLAYER games when XBL goes down…

In short, I am sick of Microsoft’s crap…and I am enjoying (very much) watching the company implode.

        • Eagles83

I really hate the Metro interface as well but thankfully you can pretty much avoid it by changing the settings. The strategy made sense to bring everything together so that the user experience from one device to another would be more seamless but the implementation left a lot to be desired.

  • Craig Sloan

It’s good for the industry if both consoles and their games sell well. One day they might not be around.

    • Lemondish

Its good for the consumer if they’re given the chance to weed out a lessor competitor by choosing not to buy it. In the end, that’s better for the industry than sales parity.

      • shinitaru

Yeah, but don’t worry, you can always switch to Playstation when that happens

      • Craig Sloan

What nonsense. One main console is bad for everyone. Imagine the Xbox was the only console around we’d all have DRM and all that other E3 nonsense they wanted. Only because Sony said screw that we have a better place for all. We need both or even more like Nintendo to rise and be strong for us all. Competition is healthy for the industry on a whole.

    • John Nemesh

Not really. When a company is BLATANTLY anti-consumer, they deserve to lose out. You are also making the mistake of thinking the entire games industry = MS + Sony. It does NOT. If Xbox dies (likely), we will still have Nintendo, PC gaming, and mobile platforms. The industry doesn’t need Microsoft…much like most people don’t need a tumor.

  • Xtreme Derp

The UK chart is here (vgcharts estimates, not real numbers). http://www.vgchartz.com/weekly/41707/UK

    Xbox 8,889, PS4 6,601. 96% = 17,422 and 72.4% = 11,380. Total for 2
weeks in UK is 26311 to 17981. Unless Xbox has a huge drop off in the
next two weeks it might take the UK this month.

Although I’m still confident PS4 will still outsell Xbone globally this month.

    • XDrone (is the new name)-lol

For all the hype, reducing the price, and giving the game free with a system, the biggest game for their system for FREE!!!!! I sure hope it gets close to outselling, because if micro$ofy can’t even pull that off, well I think you can finish the rest of that story.

  • Boerewors

I read on neogaf that Sony actually contacted EA and presented them the salesfigures they COULD have had if Titanfall wasn’t exclusive. EA started apologizing on Twitter for it and they publicly admitted that they made a huge mistake. Bet this was one of the last big 3rd party exclusives ever….

    • oddvintagetaco

      hahah wtf? makes no sense.

      • Michael Norris

If TF was on Ps3/Ps4,it would had made more money then MS moneyhat.

        • oddvintagetaco

that makes sense, but Sony contacting EA .. and basically saying F U! you lost money you ho! haha thats funny.

          • zeuanimals

Lol, they didn’t do that but they did go to EA and tell them the possible sales figures. All console manufacturers go to 3rd parties to present stuff like this to get them on-board with the console, well all excluding Nintendo, probably.

          • oddvintagetaco

I think Sony would let the numbers speak for themselves.

Sony should focus like they are right now.

Titanfall is a sure seller but they cant get into a bidding war with Microsoft. Titanfall aims for the CallOfDuty fans anyway, and CallOfDuty players are pretty loyal.

Instead Sony is doing things in the backend is its working out for them really well.

They just announced Studio Game Maker support for PS3,4, and V. That allows Indies to port their games easily. Also investing in the Move, 3D.. and what not is paying off with the PS VR.. and is creating more buzz than Kinect.

        • blzzy_gie

Why would it ?, if you read every Sony fanboy post they all say “they would get the pc version as its best” this would of course apply equally over the PS4 version.
But then Sony fanboys always talk rubbish..

      • Lemondish

How does it not make sense? Had Titanfall been released on PS3 and PS4, it would have made much more than any exclusivity deal would net them. Furthermore, it creates brand equity for new fans who would be far more likely to purchase a sequel had they played the original. That shit is usually so freakin’ valuable that its difficult to even put a price tag on it.

EA massively fucked up when they bet on the wrong horse and they really should be sorry for it. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them quietly move back to platform agnosticism. It probably isn’t a far cry to also expect them to show up at Sony’s conference at E3 this year rather than the other guy’s.

        • oddvintagetaco

who knows maybe Microsoft paid a hell out for it.

while i would have bought TitanFall, ima fine with COD. Ima not big on shooters .. but i like to shoot here once in a while.

          • neko working

            not a chance.

    • neko working

They predicted that Xbone gonna kick PS4 ass. Heck, they lost the bet. In early console lifecycle, it’s safer to do multiplatform release.

  • Johnnie

    Sharing is caring.

    • XDrone (is the new name)-lol

Lol, dude that is a good one. I have posted a couple of times with side by side pics like yours. But the funny thing is, this is at like every store that I have been to. Best Buy, Walmart, Gamestop all the same way. Also, doesn’t anybody find it odd that micro$oft or EA havr not been blasting on every news report that tintanfail has sold a trillion dollars?? For real, it just shows that you can try to manufacture hype and sales for something, but ppl have realized micro$ofts tricks.

      • Johnnie

Lol pretty much, they’re giving it away and sales are still not up to par. I actually took both of those pictures at my local Best Buy on Saturday…5 days after it launched. I really do hope this makes EA reconsider the deal and put it out for PS4 because I do wanna play it, but in the mean time I’ll continue to shake my head and laugh.

        • blzzy_gie

Did they paint the wall a different colour while you were taking that photo then ?.

      • Michael Norris

Well TF is on Pc…so i am sure that took some sales away, also you have 360 owners holding off.

        • XDrone (is the new name)-lol

True, but that just feels like making excuses. If it was some monster of a sales machine like they wanted it to be,

        • Lemondish

While the bundle is a great deal for anyone who sees value in the Xbox One, you’re absolutely right that the other platforms this game is releasing are way more widespread.

For better or worse, early adopters tend to be really interested in performance and image quality metrics. The game isn’t exactly a looker and hasn’t been as smooth in its framerate as it really should be. Despite how fun the game is, these are important to a very specific and often times rabid consumer base that has a lot of overlap with the early adopters this system is targeting.

    • DemonFenton

Thank you for proving my point.

Jack Tretton warned the gaming world about Sony passionate gaming fanbase. They speak out and if they’re not happy, they’ll make you pay for it. “Its what drives me to get up everyone morning and go to work delivering the best content and services on any platform. Thank you all for your support and dedication to making the PlayStation-nation, the best place to play.” Ya gotta admit, the guy’s got style and can market.

PS4 leads selling x4 the amount of Xbox One totalling 194,780 units …..plus an additional 17,656 units on top.

      • John Nemesh

If that is the best MS can do with a HIGHLY anticipated exclusive, they are just plain doomed. PS4 also has a highly anticipated exclusive due out next week (Infamous)…so any “bump” they got from Titanfall is going to be quickly erased.
