Ryse’s Marius Originally Had 130 Million Polygons, 147,456 × 147,456 Textures Before Optimization

by on March 23, 2014 8:04 PM 104

It was pretty interesting to see the reaction of the internet when CryTek announced that the polygon count of Marius from Ryse: Son of Rome was reduced from 150,000 polygons to 85,000 due to optimization, but his initial numbers were actually much higher than that.

During a panel titled “Play the Cutscene: The Characters of Ryse” held at the Game Developers Conference, Senior Character Artist Abdenour Bachir and Art Technical Director Christopher Evans provided some very interesting details about the development and evolution of the characters of the game.

At the beginning of development the models were created with a mind-boggling degree of finesse similar to CG film production, with up to 4 million polygons per armor piece. Putting the pieces together the model for Marius had an almost unreal total polygon count of 130 million.

Textures were also incredibly detailed, with 4,096 x 4,096 pixel per part of the model, summing up to 147,456 × 147,456 for the entire model. That’s almost 22 billion texels.

Of course no console (or gaming PC) would be able to move that kind of models at an acceptable frame rate (or at all), so the characters went through multiple rounds of optimization, resulting in 40,000 polygons for mob characters, and a very maximum of 160,000 for main characters. The general average for characters in the PS3/Xbox 360 generation is 10-20,000 polygons, meaning that characters in Ryse have between 4 and 8 times as many triangles.

It’s worth mentioning once more that polygon count optimization is an indispensable and normal phase of game development, as many of the vertex are spurious (for instance they’re placed inside the model and invisible, or they overlap), and many more can be replaced by normal maps with exactly the same visual effect but much better performance.

Bachir and Evans also mentioned that physically based rendering was used to achieve top notch visual results with good performance, subsurface scattering was employed to make skin look realistically translucent. Movement of hair, cloth and fur used to decorate armor was also physically simulated.

The team went as far as physically simulating the motion of layers of fat in the chest and belly of characters, including a very large number of animated joints. Marius ended up with 815.

One thing is for sure: that’s definitely a step-up from the physically-enhanced breasts of Dead or Alive.

Human eye can’t tell the difference. After a certain threshold there’s nothing to tell the models apart.
    For example
    http://www.cgexplorer.com/_
This is due to diminishing returns
    http://imgur.com/aFKEttJ
unfortunate but very true, there’s not really a point in bragging about polycount or ragging on about a reduced polycount because you’d never be able to tell the difference anyway on a high fidelity model.

    • Gannicus

I think the polygon count is to get far more detailed stuff like little bits of chunks missing or slight wear in the armor, its subtle but its there

    • Gannicus

      ica ntell the diifdretrnt

  • Gannicus

wow that insane 150k tyo 85k and using 4k parts for stuff is incredibly detailed… before the sony fanboyrs start marchingin could the PS4 could it better … yes BUT not at that detail most PC couldn’t do that it would take a high end rig far more powerful than a ps4 to render that at its full glory. It would be so good if crytek released Ryse on PC at full graphicall glory to see how it would actually look like wightout downgrades

    • cozomel

1st of all, all games go through this process so this is nothing special. And 2.) you dont get it, originally the game was going to have 150k polys on your main character and run at 1080p/30fps. But then the game was downgraded to 85k 900p and struggling to maintain 30fps. So nothing impressive here. Unless you consider a downgrade impressive. And a PC would smoke both the PS4 and X1 on this

      • Gannicus

well you can say that about ryse but think realistically, what happened with Infamous? the models and gfx must of bin created with a much higher detail because taking something high detail and shrinking it down is completely fine… lets say something in infamous was crated at that detail level originally thought and then need to be upped in detail… it doesn’t work cus it looks rubbish basically. Take something in photoshop it has far far better algorithyms than compuetsr use cus its tpo intense but lower to higher = rubbish higher to lowr= amazing.

  • PCS4-Box U

It’s really a shame then that they put so little thought into the actual gameplay. Hows the story on this one hold up? I played a short bit of it at a friends and thats about it, i quickly moved back to Dead Rising 3 which had the exact opposite issue, it was ugly as sin but damn fun to play.

    • Gannicus

that’s the thing though its personal prferance on what you like

      • PCS4-Box U

Very true… i kinda curious how this one would have ended up had it stayed a Kinect game. I’m guessing it didn’t go so well so they went back to a standard controller.. Still, it was the one Kinect game I was really interested in. That and maybe the Star Wars game, which was a total abomination that should never be spoke of ever again, ever.

        • Gannicus

I think the problem with Kinect games its all or nothing cus well it good for fitness for America in the obesity crisis and hey the UK is just as bad to many chunky monkeys sitting around doing nothing think a game like ryse could of really helped cus imagine ryse where you have to hack a slash with your controller… gets ya to stand up physical exercise doesn’t seem much don’t hacking an slahing like interval training can help you to radically lose weight. Running for 5 hours does nothing. Resistance interval training for fat ppl is where iots at. Take ryse and the advanced Kinect to monitor all this stuff you don’t even nee thew controller you can move attack block with your own movements and that alone will help to reduce weight of ppl… I got nothing against big ppl but a lot of them want help but reluctant to take it so my view is shove it in there face

          • PCS4-Box U

Yea, i’m not much of a fitness guru but I’m not fat either. My experience with Kinect was killed by the terrible input lag of the first one, I haven’t really messed with 2.0 very much other than voice controls, which had mixed results, but there really isnt anything out for it atm.

          • Gannicus

best thing you can do is go do some exercise ain it but even a bit for fat popl helpsd

          • Gannicus

my firend is prett7y fat and last year I told did 1 of the insanity workut with ihim, he couldn’t make it past the warm up which is really facking bad. Kinect PSeye, the move wii fitness is BS for a proper fat person because there fat for a reason they stuff there face with food. You need tackle that befor you tackle the weight but I cant be arsed with my friend anymore cus he kept telling me he hadn’t got any money yet kept going places and then told me 2 months ago he had £5000 when he casme back from new Zealand yet kept telling me he had no money but kept going places… yesterday he told me I wa boring, im not boring I just don’t want to tell him to get lost cus he owes £200 the f**ing idiot

          • PCS4-Box U

Well theres one thing I do know, you can’t force people to do anythigng they dont want to do, even if it is for their own good.. they have to come to those realizations on their own to be able to have proper commitment.

          • Gannicus

yeah I know I even paid for him go the gym for like 7-8months so its not like I was just saying stuff to him I gave him the means to go and do it and he hasn’t had a job in 10 months cus he cant be bothered so its not like he hasn’t had the free time. Hes just gotten worse with the freeloading and stuff and im sick of it im thinking of telling him to f off soak up £200 and get someone to go Ibiza that will appreciate it

        • Gannicus

Fitness games and all that is complete and utter BS. if you want full cardio resistance training ina DVD gor for Insanity… when I first did it I didn’t do anything for like 4 years aftet about 20-30 minutes I was sick in the toilet cus it was so intense for what my body was used to but keep going afte 1 1/2-2 weeks youl;l be ok and you;l get stronger amnd stronger as on the last part of each one do what you can do so you have to psuh yourself. then if that’s not enough 4 upper body 4 lower body and ab work at the gym say 4 upper = your upper body sets all in 1 go , 1minute brak do it all 4 times… move onto legs then abs only 2 tim on abs. Youll get sstronger and faster than anything

    • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

After you get into/good at the combat, it’s actually pretty fun. Granted, it’s fairly minimalistic, but that’s how hack-n-slashes play and they’re still enjoyable.

As far as the story goes, I’d give it a 6/10. Aka, it’s fairly standard for a launch title. Aka, it’s more of a graphical showcase than anything else. (And what a graphical showcase it is! Only thing that comes anywhere near close to it (on consoles) is Shadowfall!)

:) I’m happy with my purchase of it, but I’d advice others to wait until it goes ≤$40.

      • Gannicus

hts the thing review says its got a lack luster storyline stupid thing is the next CoD with updated engine will get a 9/10 even if its story is 2/10 its stupid. then sony fanboy mon about gfx downgrades in watchdogs itll be themost fun game… better thn infamous easuky this year

        • 2223

That’s how reviews work. Its just one guys opinion. Most people don’t play COD for the SP, but for the MP. It gives them endless hours of enjoyment, so they give it a high score.

        • Bilal Prince- Ali

i agree but not completely.. i HATE how reviewers give games like RYSE with an attempted unique story (even though its cliche and sorta expected) a low score with ‘lackluster story’ description all over it! then Cod and BF will get the same treatment and introduce very little to the new formula yet get 9′s and 10′s but then a game like inFAMOUS will get lower scored because some reviewers ‘dont feel the next gen leap in gameplay’ or once again ‘lackluster story’ its just tooo inconsistent.. HOWEVER comparing watchdogs and inFAMOUS is a little hard even though they’re both open world games.. they’ll attempt to offer two completely different experiences so its not really easy to compare because they’re both quality games they’re both done sooo welll but they have 2 different art styles game play attempted styles, so depending on the experience you want will determin what game you think is better.. dont you think…?

          • Gannicus

watch dogs is better hah :D

        • Michael Norris

Watch dogs looks lame as fuck,Infamous is awesome, and very fun to play.

    • Fersay Ferrera

      That makes two of us

    • shinitaru

Actually, I think that too much thought went into the gameplay, MS kept changing their minds about what kind of game that they wanted with Crytek having to repeatedly go back to the drawing board.

    • Krzysiek

I really like Ryse. Try legendary – It’s better than God of War.

      • shinitaru

I don’t see how you can compare those two games at all, they are nothing alike

        • Krzysiek

Both games are ‘slasher’. Ryse on ‘normal’ is too easy. On ‘legendary’ is best fighting game I’ve ever played. I finished this game four times

          • shinitaru

both slashers true but the pace make them completely different. Kratos is like a Cuisinart, all spinning blades and speed, with attacks that damage mobs of enemies and huge monsters. Ryse is much slower and geared toward one on one engagement, even when this is more than one enemy, your focus is one at a time. God of War is more “Clash of the Titans” and Ryse is more “300″

They may share the same genre but the really couldn’t be more different

          • shinitaru

            Oops, edited

          • Krzysiek

“Ryse is much slower and geared toward one on one engagement”

Not on legendary difficulty. Ryse on this settings is perfect game. I played two GOW’s on PS3 and first two on PCSX2 (PC emulator of PS2). Never played second time on any GOW. Ryse I finished four times (2x legendary).

          • shinitaru

It doesn’t matter which one you liked better, the gameplay is completely different. Its an apples and oranges comparison.
Anyway, don’t want to argue with you, you love the game, great! Everyone should enjoy a game that they spent their hard earned money on

          • Krzysiek

            “gameplay is completely different”

Yes. Fighting in God of War is very easy and sometimes boring. I prefer harder games like Dark Souls and Ryse with legendary settings. I like difficult games.

          • shinitaru

I’m not much for the hack and slashers, I like strategy, platformers and RPG’s but I played the first GoW and the two for the PSP. Not to hard but were pretty entertaining, for a while.

          • 3rdworldgamer

you obviously have not played God of War because you don’t seem to know that it has other modes as well. Titan & God modes are freaking hard to finish.

anyways, you liked Ryse and that’s all that should matter. enjoy the games that you liked.

        • Gabrielsp85

This is the first thing and probably the only one that I will agree with you lol

          • shinitaru

I will treasure the moment :

      • 2223

So Ryse is only better than God of War on its hardest difficulty setting!? that just proves what a badly designed game it is. Even COD on its most difficult setting is hard, but that doesn’t make it better than say… Bioshock.

  • Gannicus

Guissepe can you contact crytek see if theyd do a section of the game with no holds barred gfx, graphics at its fukl glory all150jk and 4000 oarts to see what it would look like on PC???

also 130 million polygons theres no facking way they didi that cus not even the 50 titans in the cloud would render that on an x1 at a decent framerate well maybe 1 but not even 1000

  • Gannicus

tbh I think youd have an easier time at raytracing to make realistic objects than trying render 130 million polygons so I call BS on all of it

    • PCS4-Box U

I really don’t get the point in that many poly’s when the resolution is stuck at 900p. Seems like a waste.

      • Gannicus

pends what they want to showcase, if they want to showcase what the engine can do then higher the better but sometimes having much higher polys can getr moe detailed stuff at lower reslotuions I thnk

      • cozomel

Dont you guys get it, They start with these higher quality models then that start taking away to make it work on the system, while trying to maintain as much of the look of the original models as possible. Now way is that an indiciation of the systems power, the systems could never get any where near 130 million polygons

        • Gannicus

yeah that is true youd prolly need as system dual/triple fed with 5 slots of fuk,k powered 780Tis’s to do 130 million polygonas, it inassme2-3 systems each with 5 780 Tis

      • Vdek

The difference between a 900p frame buffer upscaled to 1080p and a native 1080p is barely noticeable, you’re running into diminishing returns there.

Going forward in the future, the difference between a 900p upscaled XB1 game and a 1080p PS4 game will only be noticeable to those running 60″+ TVs at close distances.

  • Nicholas Perry

    “Play the Cutscene:”

Except a lot of the cutscenes are “Pre-rendered” in this game for “Loading” purposes. When they previously had them running in Real Time. Kind of frustrating.

        • Gannicus

fanboy delusional errrm and all that other stuff

    • Xtreme Derp

Xbots were going wild pre-launch talking about how amazing Ryse cutscenes looked and that they were realtime.

Surprise, they were just pre-rendered CG movies.

  • Gannicus

130 million polygons is insane for any topend rig eve with 4x titans in sli at fgul speed. It is BS and SC s looking to have characters similar detailed character as rise not only in armour and that but especially face which is where full performance capture isbeing used. so say upto 100-120k polygons per model which is insane and the reason why my next upgrad to is Maxwell or new AMD on the 20nm cus the current cards I honestly belive they were the target but now its higher so Maxwell/pirate islands is the way forward for SC :d

everuything is upping in detail for example the Idris originally 80 meters long after design tweak and modification end sup at 180 meters long and everyhitng above tht is getting tweaked and getting bigger not cus of the Idris but cus there thinking of nw stuff to add, its going tobe unbelievable absolutely no stoneis left untuirned. Ive seen the poster you get of the vanduul and the kingship is absolutely insanely massive it is ridiculous in size if operation pitchfork gets to atleast board one of those knignships to try takeit it would be amazing

  • Gannicus

I think the PS crowd are overwhelmed by the amount of graphical detail involved… seeing as it is so huighly detailed what are the chanced of Ryse coming to PC, even that level of gfx far surpasses even the most harened of PC’s… Is it coming?????

    • ImonadrugcalledCharlieSheen

Thats all great but its a classic example of pretty graphics dont make a game good, one need look no further then the reviews to see Ryse, although pretty, is a stinkfest of a game. Oh and this comment right here “even that level of gfx far surpasses even the most harened of PC’s.” made it pretty obvious you’re a little kid who hasn’t a clue about what he’s talking about.

      • shinitaru

yeah, my rig would chew it then spit it back out then say, “Heh, what else ya got?”

        • Gannicus

got Star Citizen its the only game im truly excited for, liking GTA 5 which will come out this year usually a 6-9month delay after console aint it, watch dogs… the division and that’s it I thnk oh project cars if that’s like the trailer itl be absolutely stunning

      • alchemistx24x7

Agree.I mean look at Killzone and inFAMOUS as prime examples pretty colors but very mediocre gameplay..

        • shinitaru

Too obvious, your trollage is. Better, next time you must do

    • superkarma

Why would we be overwhelmed by a mediocre looking game (cut scenes are hardly something to brag about) that fell incredibly short when it came to gameplay?

We’ve seen time and time again…good graphics don’t make a game worth playing. This is something you PC fanboys seem to have a hard time understanding.

      • Gannicus

yeah it foesnt but why cant we have both?? PC will always beat a console in gfx its why we shell out for decent gear to play stuff better but is true a rubbish game is rubbish ive played 1 1/2 hours of Thief, visuall its good gameplay is complete trash and I don’t think ill bother completing it, just hope watch dogs doesn’t come out for AMD never settk bundle cus ill regret getting Thif over watch dogs for free :(

    • 2223

          • 2223

i am still holding out, i want the city areas to be bigger.

          • Gannicus

they wont be bigger its a fundamental part of the game design so cant change

  • 2223

Visually the game is impressive, but gameplay wise its average at best. The sequel has potential.

    • IWorshipCats

Gameplay is tedious a hell, I rented it and I had to “force myself” to finish it…

      • Gabrielsp85

Play it on max difficulty the gameplay feels different, it becomes more in about been precise with blocking, countering and attacking to survive instead of just been a hack and slash, the game have a lot of room for improvement tho, maybe a sequel based on medieval times can fix that based o the higher variety of weapons and armors over the Romans

        • IWorshipCats

I doubt there will be a sequel

      • Michael Norris

I tried to watch a walkthrough,i gave up after 20 mins.Gameplay was bland, same 5 enemy to kill over and over and over again.

        • IWorshipCats

OMFG I know they really didn’t put any effort to make different enemy skins it is ridiculous you would think it is a NES game.

  • mikeslemonadeFromN4G

Time and time again it’s been proven it’s smoke and mirrors. If looking for the better overall performance on the consoles the PS4 is the way to go. You can keep spinning the same BS but there’s always an explanation to why the game is considered good looking.

  • Somebodyissilent

    So downgraded. Got it.

  • http://www.twitch.tv/MC_A_DOT A DOT ASANTE

I don’t know why but I still wanna try this game.

    But I have a PS4

  • Pemalite

Star Citizen has 100 million+ poly assets, so don’t lump PC’s in with the underpowered consoles in that regard, you can get a PC with in-excess 20 Teraflops of power compared to the PS4′s less than 2~ Teraflops.

    • Jecht_Sin

Huh? 20TFLOPS now? In ONE single Windows PC? Would you mind to elaborate?

      • Gannicus

4x 290x’s… 1 290x is 5.5 TFLOPS standard before overclocking… 780Ti’s essentially 4.5TFLOPS but where AMD cards have 128 shaders 780Ti’s have 2880 CUDA cores (more performance than AMD’s stream processors) and 192 shaders so on paper it looks slower but its not

        • Pemalite

          Nope.
nVidia’s Titan Black does 5 Teraflops out of the box.
          Radeon 290X is 5.6 Teraflops.
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units

Keep in mind that “Teraflops” isn’t an accurate denominator of performance, much like Mhz isn’t an accurate denominator of performance.
There is so much more to rendering a game than the amount of floating point operations that a particular processor can perform.

However, I’ve noticed that the more Console-centric websites, people seem to use “Flops” as the ultimate number to gauge a piece of hardwares performance.

          • Gannicus

yeah that’s a the titan black was talking about the normal version and normal titan has 240 shaders, looked at it on NVidia website to see that stuff a week ago or someat

          • Gabrielsp85

^This! The ponies don’t seem to understand that, AMD video cards have been outperformed by Nvidia cards with less flops count

      • Pemalite

        Elaborate?
A Single Radeon 290X can do 5.6 Teraflops.
Four Radeon 290X’s in crossfire could do 22.4 Teraflops in single precision.
Overclocked, you could probably squeeze out roughly 25 Teraflops or more.
The Playstation 4 is roughly 1.8 Teraflops.

Four nVidia Titan Blacks can push past 20 Teraflops too.

        • Jecht_Sin

Wasn’t CrossFire up to 2 graphics card? I read now about a possible Quad CrossFire. But it was an old article. Is it out already?

          • Gannicus

it was out ages ago, you have to have a expensive motherboard to do it though, it needs like 4x PCIe2 x16 slots at full speed to do it and Mantle to, CPU becomes the bottleneck even with 2 high end cards so 4 will choke it, with mantle itll be power all over the place

          • Pemalite

            You don’t need Mantle.
            You don’t need PCI-E x16 either.

You can run it in PCI-E 8x slots, 16x slots etc’.

Heck, you could even run it in a 1x slot, if you mod the motherboards connector. (I.E. Nail file.)

You get better performance with a faster slot when scaling across that many cards, especially now that AMD removed the need for a crossfire connector.

As for bottlenecks, they can vary depending on the scene, graphics and other settings, it’s not as black and white as you may think.
I run my games at 7680x1440P and I have Quad Radeon 290′s and I am still *always* GPU bottlenecked. (This is a resolution roughly 20% greater than 4k, so it’s expected.)

          • Gannicus

yeah guess so if it was 1080p CPU bottleneck running that res GPU’s aint it

          • Pemalite

If you are running only 1080P with Quad-Radeon 290X’s, you don’t deserve to be a gamer at all. :P

          • Gannicus

yeah that would be insane, 300 fps on BF4 lol you got a hex core intel to?

          • Pemalite

Yeah, an almost 3-year old Core i7 3930K @ 4.8ghz, nothing worth upgrading too when you have had essentially the fastest CPU that money can buy for years. #BlamesIntel
I’ll upgrade to an 8-core Haswell-E this year and finally retire the old 6-core chip.

          • Gannicus

I was going to say that after, you must have tons of cash lying around what do you do for a job?

          • Pemalite

            Health.
Lots of money in this industry, the hours suck though.
Earn roughly $40 an hour, which is nothing to complain about.

Quad-Crossfire has been around for YEARS. Since almost the start of the last generation consoles.

      • Pemalite

A single Radeon 290X has roughly 5.6 Teraflops per GPU, you can have up-to four working together for a total of 22.4.
You can go farther than that with overclocking.

The Playstation 4 is roughly 1.8 Teraflops, which puts things into perspective, from a ~flop perspective, the PC is already a generation ahead.

Quad-nVidia Titan Blacks can also push past 20 Teraflops.

Silly Disqus, keeps deleting my glorious comments.

        • Jecht_Sin

I am seeing all of them, actually. But I didn’t refresh. :)

    • Jhora Zakaryan

Well, if you can afford to pay a price of a car for a 20 Teraflops PC, than I’m glad for you, go ahead and play Star Citizen.
I will stick to Infamous: SS.

      • Pemalite

Might help if I owned a car… I own an Enduro trail bike, which was about $12,000. – My PC has cost me under half that.

        • Michael Balchunas

12 grand for a bike? That doesnt make you look any smarter.

          • Pemalite

You shouldn’t judge those who simply have more money than you and spend it how they want.

    • Jecht_Sin

Ok, so I looked a bit around and checked for benchmarks. Not that it is easy to find them. I’ve found this one. Honestly, I am not very impressed. I don’t know if they did anything wrong, though.
