Ryse’s Graphics Compared With and Without Some of its Advanced Visual Effects

by on March 26, 2014 6:54 PM 134

Ryse: Son of Rome has been developed by Crytek as a visual showcase of what the Xbox One can do, and in order to achieve that, they had to work very intensively on the small details that make the difference.

This was showcased at the Game Developers Conference during a panel titled Moving to the Next Generation – The Rendering Technology of Ryse. What’s interesting is that the slides included quite a few pictures showing the game’s models with and without a few of the advanced visual effects used in the game.

In the comparisons below you’ll see the picture without the effect above, one with the effect below it and an animated GIF showing the difference at the bottom. You can click on each to zoom and start the animation.

GBuffer Filter

Ryse used physically based shading, which is very prone to specular aliasing. It was fixed by applying a normal variance filter for the GBuffer.

Ambient Lights

RyseAmbientLightsNo RyseAmbientLightsYes RyseAmbientLightsComparison

The lighting model is quite complex, even for something normally simple as ambient lights. To avoid a flight lighting Crytek added multiplicative light sources on top of the usual light probes.

Subsurface Scattering

RyseSubsurfaceNo RyseSubsurfaceYes RyseSubsurfaceComparison

This is one of the most publicized effects used in the facial rendering of the game. It helps making the skin look naturally translucent.

Ryse Hair Depth Fixup for Thin Hair

RyseDepthFixupNo RyseDepthFixupYes RyseDepthFixupComparison

Ryse uses a new technology called “Thin Hair” to render hair, but it comes with an alpha (transparency) problem with the environment and with depth of field effects. This was solved with a special fix that makes it look definitely better.

looking at the picture above, we can definitely say that in Ryse: Son of Rome the devil is in the details. The difference may seem small at first sight, but this kind of effect is crucial when a PC developer has to work on hardware less powerful than its usual target, and we can definitely say that they succeeded in their goal of creating a great visual showcase for the Xbox One.

I’m probably gonna get flamed to Hell for saying this, but I was underwhelmed when seeing the game in action. The biggest flaw for me was the eyes, asides from being empty and soulless, they never quite seemed to be looking where they should be, almost as if they were looking past the thing they were supposed to be focusing on.

    • incendy

What game are you comparing it to? I have never seen models that detailed on any platform, including PC.

      • inderpitably

Oh buddy, there’s pushing it and then there’s this. Fanboys gonna fanboy. Ryse isn’t the greatest looking game by a long shot.

        • incendy

So do you have a game you want to put against their models or not?

          • shinitaru

No, but I promise you, if it can run on the XB1, my PC could run 3-4 different instances of it and the PS4 could run it just as well and then some. There’s no doubt that Crytek did a great job on the models but they sacrificed other features to make that happen like the fact that there are only a few models and you fight the same guys, sometime even find yourself surrounded but identical enemies. I hear that most of the areas are very confined too.
Don’t toot your horn too loudly, it is still very early in this generation, more and better are on the way. And don’t even try to compare to the capabilities of PC gaming

          • d0x360

As a gamer of all hardware I call bill**** on your claim of running 4 instances of Ryde. Sorry guy but even at 640×480 with all effects turned on with equal detail levels on an nvidia titan you cannot run 4 instances of this game. That would be akin to running crysis 3 at over 4k at ultra level settings twice. Not gonna happen.

          • shinitaru

I was merely making a comparison of sheer power. And it was just an estimation and no, its not like running Crysis 3 a 4k Ultra. It would be like running Ryse 3x at 900p but of course there’s no way of putting it to the test

          • mars mayflower

“of course there’s no way of putting it to the test”
this sums up your logic. let’s come up with fantasmical comparison of a game i’ve never played because I think the platform sucks. learn to not be a dumbass.

          • shinitaru

Aww, did I hurt your little feelings with my trifle of an opinion? Boo-hoo

          • mars mayflower

“Aww, did I hurt your little feelings with my trifle of an opinion? Boo-hoo”
yes, my feelings are very hurt. now go learn how not to be a dumbass.

          • shinitaru

I’m free to be a dumbass if I want to be, but you haven’t said anything that proves that I am. Grow up, saying something over and over again doesn’t make it true

          • mars mayflower

I don’t need to prove you are a dumbass… because you’re already a dumbass, you dumbass.

          • shinitaru

so, let me guess, 12 yrs old? 15 tops?

          • mars mayflower

            fantastic, then

          • mars mayflower

            oh yea, you’re a dumbass

          • d0x360

It would be like running it at 4k. Resources aren’t going just to rendering more pixels. GPU time is being uses for lots of effects and ryse uses some graphical upgrades in the engine that weren’t in crysis 3. I get what your saying and the comparison you are trying to make but you went way extreme lol.

All that aside Ryse truly is a fantastic looking game regardless of the platform its running on. Even compared to modern PC games it looks really good. Sure there are PC games that look better but not many. I’d say Ryse is still the best looking console game available. I was hoping infamous would take that crown but it has too many missing effects on top of a bland art style. Still a fun game though.

          • shinitaru

I know, I’m probably exaggerating, but the point still stands, if the XB1 can do it, it would be cake for a decent gaming PC.

Bland art style? I beg to differ but opinions are opinions, yours being just as valid as mine

          • d0x360

Oh yes PC could certainly do it but it would take specs higher than what’s in the Xbox.

Yes I find most of it fairly bland. I dunno maybe it’s cost I’m only a couple hours in. It’s a complaint I’ve always had with the serious. Don’t get me wrong the city looks good it just looks very plain.

Los Santos in GTA 5 for example has…soul. It feels like a real lived I’m city with its own unique look. The city in second son looks like an overly clean place…almost like a movie set. It doesn’t feel lived in. I’m still enjoying the hell out of the game I just wish it had more..something. I can’t quite put my finger on it exactly.

          • shinitaru

Have you ever been to Seattle? It’s like that, though not quite as perfect as the game. Same with Portland, Ore. GTA on the other hand is trying to represent a seedier city

          • d0x360

I never have no. That’s understandable but at the same time its a video game so some exaggeration is welcome.

          • shinitaru

I lived in Portland for 6 years back in the 80’s, very clean. Had some serious littering laws.

          • shinitaru

Neither city is very old either, lots of new buildings

          • d0x360

Oh I bet. Lots of money in Seattle

          • mars mayflower

Uh, i believe he and others have already compared the capabilities to PC gaming. And they compare quite nicely. Learn to read.

          • shinitaru

What? Do you think that I’m so caught up in this conversation that I will research everything that they have ever written? Get real.

The original post that I was replying to said that nothing like it has been done on any other platform, including PC, I was merely pointing out that it would be simply a matter so someone wanting to.

            Learn to comprehend

          • mars mayflower

“I hear that most of the areas are very confined too. ”
You should actually play the game.

          • shinitaru

No thank, I don’t need to spend $500 plus the cost of the game to know that I wouldn’t enjoy it. Looks boring. If I were to choose a game from the XB1’s library, it would be Dead Rising 3, that at least looks fun. I don’t care how pretty a game is, boring is boring.

          • mars mayflower

well, to be honest, I really thought the same thing. didn’t want to spend the cash but i caved and was surprised by how fun it actually was. i played through three times before trading it in. and multiplayer is freaking awesome. try twitching multiplayer. that all said, it’s still not worth 60 bucks.

          • incendy

I agree with you to an extent. Although developing for PC isn’t as cut and dry as you want to believe. The GPU’s are without question more powerful “the high end models”, however, the systems as a whole don’t work nearly as efficient. For example, X1’s access to DDR3 memory from the CPU is 30GB/s, on a PC you are looking at around 12gb max bandwidth because of the motherboard bus. PC’s do use very fast CPU caches to bypass this hurdle, but there is no way to bypass the issue when it comes to both the CPU and the GPU working on the same memory because the PCI Express bus is severely limited by the bus bandwidth. Basically with a PC you are offloading memory back and fourth instead of working together on it. The GPU alone has its own memory so its bandwidth to its own memory is the speed of the memory “basically a cache” but if the CPU wants to work on that same memory in parallel it is a problem. The architecture of both the PS4 and the X1 right now are much better thought out than on any PC, although Nvidia, Intel and AMD are all working on fixing that. Parallel Computing is the future and right now X1 and PS4 have the best architecture to take advantage of it.

          • Michael Norris

Ryse on Ps4 wouldn’t run at 900p it would be running at 1080p with a solid 30fps frame rate.

          • Matthias Heinz

Don´t be jealous. Maybe it would, maybe not. Fact is, it is fun and looks awesome, but only on the Xbox One. ;)

          • incendy

Maybe one day PS4 will get a game with that kind of detail so we can actually see it :D

    • A_Wise_Man

      I dont always nitpick

      But when I do

      I go for the eyes

  • Jamal

It sure is a good looking game

  • CervantesPR

crytek is great at making pretty graphics, but they suck at making fun games.

    • Giuseppe Nelva

I had fun with Crysis 3.

      • shinitaru

Yeah, it was pretty fun. I bought it to test out my then new PC build. That bow was a bit OP though

        • Giuseppe Nelva

That was 80% of the fun :D

          • shinitaru

            Definitely was

    • incendy

I enjoyed Ryse very much. Especially when you hit that Damocles story arch, so awesome.

      • ThePokeMaster

Pretty average. Must not be used to better storytelling ^

        • mars mayflower

Must not be used to having friends^

          • ThePokeMaster

            Well, you got me!
My lack of friends affects the way I perceive awesome storytelling as mediocre, somehow, according to your nonsensical comment
            /s

          • mars mayflower

            yea, that sucks for you

          • ThePokeMaster

Thanks for the clever reply. Totally refutes my original comment.

          • mars mayflower

well, I am just a monkey with a conscience. thanks for tip.

    • Nicholas Perry

      Suck at making fun games?

I’ve enjoyed every single game they’ve made IMMENSELY, personally. But different strokes different folks.

Games like Crysis 1-3 are some that I will revisit infinitely.

    • Faisal Munayam

true, could say the same about killzone, that looked great, played like a$$

      • ThisMan

But you would be right about the KZ games. Crytek games are much better than GG games.

        • cozomel

Is that why all the KZ games have smoked the Crytek games on the consoles? Now if you wanna talk about sucking, lets talk Halo.

      • cozomel

At least it looks great, Halo, doesnt evn look great and still plays like a$$

    • Moses Lawrence

They may not be the best but surely they are not the worst. By average their games are rated in the 80’s. This is not opinions like yours but facts taken from metric scores

    • Amith Thomas

You haven’t played the Crysis games have you ? Atleast not on pc. I’ve played lots of shooters on pc and consoles. Crysis warhead beats most others, Crysis 1 I’m sure is great because its the same gameplay. Crysis 2 was a step down, but still better than just about everything else in terms of SP.
‘boring gameplay’ that’s what everyone who hasn’t played it says. Has some of the most incredible, varied gameplay and let you interact with everything in a fully simulated living breathing environment. As far as gameplay is concerned, it was so ahead of its time.

  • Xtreme Derp

Ryse’s cutscenes are pre-rendered CG movies. Is this tech going on during actual gameplay? Actual gameplay footage looks decent but nothing amazing.

    • Eagles83

You are so full of crap. Ryse looks great while playing the game. Quit hating on something just because you are a Playstation fanboy.

      • ImonadrugcalledCharlieSheen

Ryse sucks, stop apologizing for Microsoft you brainwashed drone.

        • Eagles83

I thought Ryse was going to suck after the e3 press conference where it looked like a quick time disaster but the actual game is decent. It isn’t mind blowing or game of the year material but it isn’t bad either. The combat is good but it is repetitive.

You sound like someone that hasn’t played it and are just a “Playstation drone” as you would put it. Having said that the comment was referring to the graphics and not the gameplay. If you are trying to say that the graphics is Ryse sucks then I would say you lose any credibility.

      • Matthias Heinz

It seems, the PS4 fanboys are jealous, the PS4 version of Ryse is only 0p 0 frames.

        • shinitaru

You say that like its a bad thing

        • Xtreme Derp

I’ll start a petition to keep Ryse off PS4.

          • Corellianrogue

Great idea, I’ll gladly sign it, you ponies don’t deserve to play it. While you’re at it can you also start a petition to keep crap like Killzone and Knack off the Xbox One?

          • Xtreme Derp

Fanboy having a meltdown on the loose. LOL

          • Laza Amafirin

He just owned you, and that’s your response? Lol, you sure keep me entertained.

          • Xtreme Derp

Pointing out that you’re rabid fanboy animals is “owning”? LOL

      • Xtreme Derp

No. Gameplay looks muddy at 900p and the framerate often tanks. Not “hating” to state facts and ask legitimate tech questions.

        • Eagles83

Have you played it or just watched online videos? I’ve beaten the game and do not see any visual issues. It looks fantastic.

          • Xtreme Derp

I’ve watched high quality gameplay footage on gamersyde.

          • Eagles83

There is still compression unless you download the video to your desktop. As I said I’ve played it and it looks great. Watching a video online…………not the same.

          • Xtreme Derp

Gamersyde vids are usually 1-2GB in size and very lightly compressed (15-20k bitrate), very close to direct capture quality footage.

          • Eagles83

Well I don’t know what else to say to you other than it sounds like you are being biased based on the platform of your choice. The best looking games on next gen so far are Killzone, Ryse, and Infamouse. All three look great but you seem to only like the Sony ones for some reason………….hmmmm.

          • Xtreme Derp

Ryse has some pretty moments, but the framerate tanks too often in combat, and the CG movie cutscenes aren’t evidence of the system’s graphics power.

I’m recognizing which games are showing better technical achievements on stronger hardware. Some people think 8-bit NES games are the best looking games out there, after all.

    • A_Wise_Man

You just described the majority of Sony exclusives.

      • datdude

Said the guy who’s never played a Sony exclusive and therefore never played a goty winner, because only Sony and Nintendo produce those for consoles. Too sad for words.

      • Michael Norris

Dude,Infamous looks amazing oh and it is an open world game.Ryse has much smaller confine environments.Don’t troll because he is right.Gameplay wise Ryse is mediocre at best.It looks good but that is it,also all of the cutscenes are CG,

      • ImonadrugcalledCharlieSheen

Actually he didn’t so maybe try STFU.

      • Xtreme Derp

A lot of games use pre-rendered CG movies for cutscenes. It’s just there’s a contingent of delusional fanboys who keep screaming about Ryse cutscenes looking amazing when they’re too stupid to realize they aren’t even realtime.

In fact they get butthurt if it’s even pointed out that the cutscenes are CG movies and actual gameplay footage looks much worse.

    • Faisal Munayam

that was to reduce load times, killzone did the same, doesn’t stop ryse from being the best looking next gen console title so far..

      • Xtreme Derp

KZ uses a few pre-rendered CG movies, but it’s mostly realtime. Same with infamous. Both KZ and infamous are more technically advanced, which makes sense considering PS4’s hardware is significantly more powerful.

“Load times” is a worthless excuse, the cutscenes obviously look far better than actual gameplay.

    • Corellianrogue

No they’re not, stop spreading that same SDF FUD. There are only A FEW cutscenes that are FMV and that was only to hide loading and because they couldn’t be optimised in time for launch. However, even those few FMV cutscenes were recorded off the Xbox One running them in REAL-TIME and ALL the other cutscenes run during the game in REAL-TIME and that’s a FACT!

      • Xtreme Derp

Delusional and wrong misterx kool-aid chugger. “load times” is a worthless excuse, the cutscenes obviously look far better than actual gameplay.

        http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-vs-ryse-son-of-rome

“Unfortunately, that brings us to another disappointment; Crytek’s stated
commitment to “real-time, all the time” goes unrealised in Ryse with
        the move to pre-rendered cut-scenes.”

        • Corellianrogue

That article is WRONG and been PROVEN WRONG. Now stop stalkng me you sick f4g otherwise I’ll track you down for real and destroy your life!!! Think I’m joking? Just trying it a$$hole!

          • Xtreme Derp

LOL. Just for fun I googled your disqus handle and saw what a hideous, loathsome piece of crap you are on your twitter, constantly shilling Kinect. You claim to suffer from “ME/CFS” aka lazy fat loser syndrome.

LOL you’re clearly suffering more mental illness than CFS, considering the threat filled meltdown you’re having. I’m right, you’re wrong and having a deranged fanboy meltdown.

          • Corellianrogue

Your stalking and trolling days are numbered MIKE POPE! Yeah, be afraid, very afraid…

          • Xtreme Derp

LOL. Throwaway facebook account. That’s not my real picture either, numnuts. God you’re dumb.

          • Corellianrogue

You’re a Sony fanboy yet Microsoft told me that you were playing Super Street Fighter IV on the Xbox 360 on Tuesday. Well if I had a PS4 I’d be playing a rival console instead too, lol!

          • Xtreme Derp

Infamous is technically superior in every way. 1080p, 35 fps average (according to DF), open world, next gen visual effects, cutscenes are mostly realtime, etc.

If you think a 900p, 20 fps average, QTE corridor brawler with copypasted barbarian enemies and CG movie cutscenes “looks better”, that’s your dumb and delusional opinion.

It’s still a fact PS4’s hardware is superior and its games are technically more advanced as a result.

Factual PS4 Hardware Advantages: +6 CUs, +560 GFlops (44% greater), +16 ROPs, +6 ACEs/CQs, better GPGPU support, better performing CPU, and faster unified memory. PS4 OS may also have less overhead or reserves.

Both Sony and MS have world class coders that will extract every bit of performance out of their consoles with their drivers/APIs/SDKs. The difference is PS4 simply has more powerful hardware to work with, so it will always stay ahead in graphics performance.

PS4 will have better performing games for the entire generation as it has more powerful hardware, you can’t overcome a hardware gap with better drivers/SDKs.a

    • Corellianrogue

Your’e the delusional one. The game looks exactly the same as the cutscenes or are you going to claim that for instance all the executions are pre-rendered? LMAO! If you actually had the game you would be able to see that most of the cutscenes are running in realtime, especially those cutsecenes that either immediately become playable at the end or the ones where you’re playing then the game takes control and moves the camera in and around.

Also why would Crytek go to great lenght to explain all the graphical techniques they used and do a whole presentation at SIGGRAPH about it if they were just making pre-rendered scenes?

The only totally pre-rendered (as in not even the few FMVs recorded off the Xbox One running them in realtime) scenes in Ryse are in it’s TV ad which bizarrely features no game graphics at all just live action with pre-rendered scenes at the end. Now look at those scenes and compare them to the ones in the game itself, they’re clearly better even those the game’s cutscenes are amazing, so prove that the vast majority of cutscenes in the game are real-time otherwise they’d all look as good as the TV ad’s pre-rendered graphics.

      • Xtreme Derp

LOL completely wrong and ignorant. You’re making up insane conspiracy theories that have no basis on reality. You also claimed Sunset Overdrive’s CG movie reveal was realtime on an Xbox. LOL

You misterxturds are a delusional conspiracy theory cult similar to flat earthers, hardcore creationists, perpetual motion cranks, and anti-vaccine lunatics.

PS4 will have better performing games for the entire generation as it has more powerful hardware. It could easily run Ryse at 1080p, higher framerate, more visual effects, and better GPGPU physics.

        • Vdek

They don’t call you Xtreme Derp for nothing I guess.

I think you ought to re-examine your piss poor choice of supporting the Cancer of this industry for the next decade..

          • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

Just because the Wii U has a tablet doesn’t mean that it can’t have amazing software… And just because it doesn’t have amazing software yet doesn’t mean that it won’t have any down the line.

Although, while I do have a slight bit of buyer’s remorse, that Wind Waker gamepad is quite sexy (just wish it wasn’t so dusty).

          • ConsoleTruth818

I think you replied to the wrong person here buddy.

While I do think Nintendo has lost their ways in the sense that they can’t adapt to technology changing things, I have never and will never hate on Nintendo.. I grew up with them and the NES is still my favorite Console of all time.

Again, I think you replied to someone else?

          • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

Nope. I replied to whom I intended to.

      • shinitaru

Brother, I love your enthusiasm but I think you need to take a chill-pill ;D

        • ConsoleTruth818

People have said that to you too bro! It doesn’t matter Shin, we are both on the same side of this anyhow! :)

      • http://akimotogaming.co.vu/ ilovegoogleglass

You sound very immature, how old are you exactly?

        • ConsoleTruth818

Old enough to be your father. Now as I said, run along you mindless xbot, run along.. the entire industry is going to suffer because you chose to be stupid enough to back the wrong horse.

I mean seriously, how stupid and gullible are you people.. The Reveal, their PR, their lies and what they tried to do should have been enough for any rational and sane minded gamer to jump ship.

Only an ADULT and not a mindless sheep is able to read between the lines here. Keep believing that scumbag Major Nelson and his outright lies and have fun when the price of live is raised again in order for those scumbags at MS to justify more apps.

Funny how this generation is going to be in PS4’s favor isn’t kid?

          • http://akimotogaming.co.vu/ ilovegoogleglass

You’re taking this way to seriously man, they’re just consoles. If you really talk like this, I wonder what you sound like in person? Why do you care so much about what people buy? Don’t you think people know what they pay for. I hope you enjoy your PS4 and take my reality check in account….

      • Laza Amafirin

Oh, the irony. Please tell me you’re trolling. Hahahhahaa

        • ConsoleTruth818

Hate to break it to ya, but there is No irony in anything I said. What this boils down to is people like Googleglass are incapable of thinking for themselves.

If anything the fact that so many morons still want to support Microsoft’s business ventures after they blatantly lied to and disrespected their install base tells me there isn’t much hope for humanity left.

I’m just preaching about how Naive and gullible people are.

          • Laza Amafirin

Ha, guy you need some serious help. You do realize Microsoft is not a single entity, right? It’s several (several) different branches of smaller companies that make up the entire corporation. They’re affiliated with each other, but they’re still separate. No single voice speaks for all of those several small branches. Which means if someone in the Azure branch said “Screw all our customers.”, that doesn’t mean MS as a whole is anti-consumer. Same goes for Sony, they’re both corporations who strive to make a profit. That’s it.

Fanboys (such as yourself) need to get that through your head. The real hate of MS comes from the fact that they’re competition against Sony. Before this new-gen started I didn’t see as much MS hate as I see now. It’s pathetic.

          • ConsoleTruth818

Again with the nonsense of trying to tell an adult shit that he already knows.. Nice try though. Also the real hate for MS WITH ME has nothing to do with being in competion with sony. I think you need to get that through your head.

Again, being a fanboy has nothing to do with hating on a company that treated their consumers like criminals at E3 with Draconian DRM.. Then lied to us about the DRM being able to be taken out.. we all know how that went down…

Again this has nothing to do with being a fan of Sony.. I’m a console fan in general, I don’t game on PC either. You don’t have to be a fan of Sony to rip into MS these days..

Hell I’ll put MS right up there with Enron..

          • Laza Amafirin

You want to be considered an adult? Act like one. Until then I’ll keep talking down to you, psycho. The reason I explained all that was because you obviously weren’t getting it through your thick head.

“Again, being a fanboy has nothing to do with hating on a company that treated their consumers like criminals at E3 with Draconian DRM.. Then lied to us about the DRM being able to be taken out.. we all know how that went down…”

AGAIN, YOU OBVIOUSLY DON’T GET IT. IT’S MS’ PR EMPLOYEES OF THE XBOX DIVISION THAT TOLD THESE THINGS. MS DOESN’T HAVE A MOUTH TO SPEAK FOR IT’S ENTIRE SELF. You say you’re an adult, but you completely disregard what I just stated like an ignorant child.

“You don’t have to be a fan of Sony to rip into MS these days..”

So you ‘rip’ MS with no clause? What are you getting out of this?

    • ImonadrugcalledCharlieSheen

      Don’t count on it.

      • JustGaming

Let them remain hopeful. If visuals are the be-all and end-all of this generation, then when PS4’s API gets updated, people will start cry and go back to talking up cloud computing.

Who started this DX12 will magically make XBone more powerful bull**** anyway? The same people that started all the PR spin about ‘the power of the cloud’? Oh yeah, they did (MSoft). HAs anyone seen CryEngine running on a PS4 exclusive yet? No? Well then…….

DX12 will not magically add new hardware, it will make the most out of what is already there.

I sincerely wish people would just enjoy their games, whatever the system, and stop worrying about purile bragging rights school yard level crap (wishful thinking I know).

        • DemonFenton

Some joker named MisterXMedia on his live journal blog started this BS. It drew the Xbox Mafia and they been using it as an bible. That’s the guy who started it. Even someone from MS said there’s no hidden anything. Cloud PR BS was started by MS. Hope that helps and I agree 1000% with your post.

    • Matthias Heinz

DX12 will show the real power of the XBox One and its custom gpu. Ryse looks awesome and it is a release game, there is a lot more to come. :)

      • shinitaru

See, the thing that most of you guys don’t seem to be able to grasp is that DX12 was not made for the XB1, it was made from the XB1. Meaning that the benefits of DX12’s low level API’s are already in place on the XB1 and have been since day one.

  • bruce livingston

I think we can credit Crytek for that one. Seeing as nothing else on X1 even comes close.

    • spideynut71

      …or on the PS4.

      • shinitaru

Like we would want something like Ryse on the PS4. Sure, it’s pretty, but I would rather those resources went into making the game more fun. Making a game pretty just for it’s own sake without putting anything into the gameplay. Personally, I think the game is ugly. Lots of detail but what are you looking at? Fat guys in togas, sweaty, hairy, dirty men in colorless armor. There’s no eye candy in the game at all. But if that’s what you are into, more power to you

        • Xtreme Derp

Sounds like the last misterxmedia cult meetup.

  • https://www.youtube.com/ButtonBros TheRedButterfly

God this game is beautiful. Definitely not the most fun game in my library, but pretty good for a launch title. :)

  • ImonadrugcalledCharlieSheen

A classic example of a pretty game not translating into a good one, Ryse sucks no matter how graphically good it is, should have been left as nothing more then a tech demo like it belonged. Unfortunetly Micrsoft has no developers that can make another game like Crytek thats pretty but also good. Therefore Ryse will forever remain that one pretty game that totally sucked.

    • lester perdomo

its a decent launch title …and exclusive at that.

i remember getting my launch consoles last gen and all i had to play was a need for speed game … so this is not so bad.

      • shinitaru

I question your definition of “decent” but you do have a point.

  • Stefan Eckhardt

Hmmm… no clue why this is discussed several months after the game’s release? But it probably has nothing at all to do with Infamous: Second Son, because that would make it look like saying “Hey, we’ve got pretty too!!! Please love us!!!”. :D

    • shinitaru

Oh yeah, definitely had nothing at all to do with that, LMAO

    • Vdek

It has to do with the fact that GDC was last week… But go on believing your conspiritard theories.

      • Stefan Eckhardt

And you go on believing that news is neutral and driven by pure interest and research. Of course Crytek talked about their tech on GDC, just like Guerilla Games did. But they basically repeated what they revealed last November, when their game came out, and thus got little attention this week, which is fine.

Crytek published nice slides and got nice news reports all over the place with nice pictures and detailled explanations. Why not last November? Do I think they only talked about it at GDC because of desperately needed promotion of the platform? No! Do I think they joined effort with Microsoft to inflate it and turn it into a news event just in time for Second Son’s release to have some talking point against it? Yes!

As you said, this is games developer convention, targeted primarily at games developers. But certain things get picked out and reformatted to be targeted at the consumer audience, scroll to the top of the page for an example.

  • Faisal Munayam

i wish these guys were the lead graphic designers of call of duty

  • PatcherStation

There’s hardly anything in it. The way people go on, Ryse looks like a PS2 game. Look at the GTA games, they always looked average graphically, but who cared? I’ll admit that GTA 5 looked awesome, but that was on last gen consoles. Ryse 2 will look awesome. If it happens.

  • cozomel

Damn this isnt against Ryse, but rather against technology in general, but half these features are so minimal, they are barely noticable anymore. Alot of them dont even look like hook ups, but rather a choice

  • Moses Lawrence

Although i play my games on PS4 and my gaming PC i must say i was very impressed at the visual fidelity of Ryse on Xbox One. Just goes to show how far the hardware in these new systems will go and improve as time goes on. Looking at Killzone, Infamous and Ryse this early in these systems life bolds well for the future of both systems. Imagine when developers utilize these consoles in a much more optimized way. Amazing games coming for both systems!! PC will greatly benefit from this as well. Yeah no fanboyism tricks flowing in my blood, yo! Tricks are for Kids
