I don’t know about anyone else, but Spider-Man 2 the video game had the best web-slinging ever, largely due to its depth and physics-based controls that made your webs actually stick to nearby buildings. Web-slinging through Manhattan by using your surroundings added nuance and depth for expert movement; this made many gamers (such as myself) pop in the game from time to time long after we beat it just to roam the city as restless friendly neighborhood heroes.
The exciting thing about The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is that it will be returning the series to this mechanic, integrated with previous ideas like the first game’s Web-Rush. All of this can be viewed in the developer walkthrough below, which also shows off the game’s Hero or Menace system, and how your reputation affects the way others react to the Web-Slinger during gameplay.
Due to fan request, the developers at Beenox have added a higher role for Peter Parker, which includes his own tasks and goals, and the ability to use his room for replaying missions, upgrading stats and abilities, and using a variety of unlocked suits for different purposes. A number of Peter’s various identities and costumes are shown (and a few of his allies’ as well), including his battle-worn costume, his proto-costume, his original Amazing Spider-Man movie look, Doc Ock’s “Superior Spider-Man” costume, his Hornet identity, Miguel O’hara’s “Spider-Man 2099” look, the Alex Ross-designed costume, the inverted color costume, Miles Morales “Ultimate Spider-Man” costume, the “Big Time” costumes, the “Ricochet” identity, among others, presumably. As previously reported, there will be costumes in this game that have been featured since the PlayStation One era of Spider-Man games, and all costumes will have perks and upgrades.
The approach to missions has changed, too: instead of linear levels, the developers have now created open-levels that allow players to carry out their objectives as they like. Do you go in stealthily, or loud and direct? Do you use the new inverted takedowns or special webbing to strip down armored enemies? The video shows off more of his new foes, combos and the return of his Detective Mode-like Spider-sense. There’s also a peek at one of the major villains of the game.
Beenox promises more details to come before The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to launch on April 29th for the PS4 and PS3, as well as the Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. For more on the game, check out all of our Spider-Man news.
