Sony Comments on March NDP Victory for PS4: Cites Supply Constraints and inFAMOUS Demand

by on April 17, 2014 6:45 PM 117

Sony Computer Entertainment just sent a press release commenting on the latest North American NPD figures for March, that saw the PS4 beat the Xbox One for the third month in a row. Senior Vice President of PlayStation Brand Marketing Guy Longworth also mentioned further supply constraints and the high demand for inFAMOUS: Second Son.

Today’s NPD report confirmed that PlayStation 4 was No. 1 in sales for March and extended its cumulative lead for next generation game consoles, despite continued supply constraints. NPD also highlighted that PlayStation sold the most total consoles and demand for inFAMOUS Second Son was extremely strong.

Longworth also commented further on Twitter:

NPD confirms PS4 #1 in console sales for March – Thanks to our fans & our team. So much great stuff coming!

It remains to be seen just how long supply will remain constrained. The house of PlayStation previously went on record promising that it will start matching demand properly by the summer, and we can only hope for that to be true.

Just yesterday Sony Computer Entertainment announced that the PS4 sold through over seven million units, showing an amazingly constant rate of growth of its installed base since January.

      the party doesnt stop lol

  • Gannicus

that’s strange cus ive heard of PS4′s sitting on shelves doing nothing? pends in what territories of course although tbh sony does need this win, seeing as the PS3 nearly crippled them they need get some money back even though there losing money on every console sold, the game sales should at least put them back in profit at some point

    • Jewy McJew

Shops in Canada (like best buy and amazon.ca) finally have PS4 units in stock for more than a few hours at a time. This is a recent phenomenon… just the last couple of weeks.

    • Raven Nafariea

I know the stores around here had a huge problem keeping PS4′s and the camera’s in stock. It took me forever to get one off of Amazon and I had to order my mom’s through Walmart online. I finally got a camera also but played with it for about and hour then gave it to my mom. lol

      • Gannicus

really just looked at amazon.co.uk, play.com and zavvi in UK and all have PS4′s in stock last few times ive checked shown PS4′s in stock to so, must just be the states not getting enough cus there more than enough here

        • Raven Nafariea

Oh Amazon has them in stock now but didn’t for many months and only recently stocked them again. I bought my first PS4 back in Jan and they were having a very hard time getting them in stock. I was basically hitting the refresh button every couple of mins to check for stock then got lucky one night and placed my order as fast as I could… lol

          • Gannicus

Jan to end of april is a long itme, I looked a few weeks ago and everywhere had them in stock

          • Raven Nafariea

Yeah, they are finally doing a better job at keeping up with the demand.

          • Gannicus

yeah only cus demand is falling off now

          • Raven Nafariea

Demand isn’t falling off yet and won’t for the next couple of months at least. It is just Sony is finally able to put more stock in stores finally so they were able to successfully over step the demand for the time being. That doesn’t mean the demand disappeared all of a sudden. With The Last Of Us and Driveclub coming out then Watch Dogs with a bundle there is no stopping the demand any time soon. Oh and let’s not forget the most anticipated game of the year, Spider-man 2 that will not be available on the Xbox.

Okay, I was joking at the end there, hehe

          • Gannicus

I highly doubt The Last Of Us will shift consoles, watchdogs prolly will but I doubt Drive Club will either, not to many people are into racing games. Destiny could be a system seller though The Order might sell a few but its not something that everyone will be into, same as Infamous 1 million sold out of 7million consoles, 1/7th not a very good sales seeing as its supposed to be the absolute best thing on here also the only full game to be released really with a couple month difference between it and watchdogs, unless more ppl are waiting for a price drop

          • Raven Nafariea

I think you under estimate TLOU. When it was annouced it jumped up on Amazon.coms Best Selling list to the top and has been there for a long time. I would check now but I am to tired. TLOU is considered by many as the best game ever made so of course it will move systems. I know all of this great Sony and PS4 news is killing you and that you are having to bite your tongue and about to explode and all. I feel for you and am sorry all of this is hard for you to except. HUGS!! =)

          • Raven Nafariea

Yep, The Last of Us is still there. 10 days in the top 100 list sitting at 28. PS4 games and the system take up most of the top 29 list with only the Xbox One sitting at number 24 which is pethetic really. Not selling well at all on Amazon which is a great indicator of how well it is selling in stores as well. This is for the US btw.

          • Gannicus

TLOU will sell a lot of games, not a lot of systems. People who own PS3 and played TLOU unless there die hard fanboys who only care about gfx they wont spend over £400 to play the same game again.

          • Raven Nafariea

I know I would but a PS4 just for TLOU alone. I know I am not the only one. One of the biggest reason to not buy a PS4 and just keep the PS3 was because you couldnt play great games like this. With Uncharter games and this game being released for the PS4 and possibly but more than likly Grand Theft Auto 5 coming as well this will pursuade people to buy a PS4 so it is a system seller whether you like to admit it or not. lol

          • Bankai

            Oh really, where’s your proof?

          • Gannicus

errm consoles not selling in the UK so in the UK demand is falling off, prolly still high in America cus theres a lot more ppl

          • DemonFenton

            Your salty tears are yummy…

        • Dikan45

You try too hard! Turning positives into negatives and checking stock on several websites! Have a day off!

          • Gannicus

I don’t try to hard actually just stating facts, a lot of fanboys prolly go up to the shops to count how many xboxs are on the shelves… im not as bad as that but when ppl say its sold out everywhere and you cant get one when in actual fact I could go to a shop right now and buy one, its not true is it

          • Raven Nafariea

Who said it was sold out everywhere?

          • Gannicus

every fanboy that thinks every single person in the world wants one so you cant buy one anywhere

          • Raven Nafariea

I haven’t seen anyone claim they were totally sold out. Just much harder to get. You really had to search for one for months in order to get one and it is still like that in many places in the world where you can just look anywhere really and find a Xbox.

    • Bankai

It’s very rare to see a PS4 sitting on a shelf, so it’s likely that what you heard was true, but not for long. “sony does need this win, seeing as the PS3 nearly crippled them” That actually isn’t completely true, they used profits from Sony Pictures to offset those losses, now stop trying to spin this.

      • Gannicus

PS4′s available from 3 major online retailers that ive bothered to check and last time I checked in stock etc etc in UK…. prolly just America thers not enough

    • Sexy Mcgee

Not as big of a loss as previous gens. With almost 3 games sold per console and the success of PS+ they actually make money per unit sold.

    • Giuseppe Nelva

Supply constraints doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s sold out everywhere. It means that some retailers have it, some don’t.

  • Raven Nafariea

GO SONY and PS4 and inFAMOUS! So proud of them all! =)

  • Craig Sloan

Xbox One was killing itself to compete with PS4 this month as well. They had a bundle that included a free copy of Titanfall and one years free XBLG subscription with the Xbox one. PS4 is a great games console and inFamous is a good game. Just add some more features and few big AAA games i.e The Order 1886 and Driveclub and it will be golden.

    Congrats Sony.

    • extermin8or2

firmware due soon with the video editor and HD USTREAM streaming and more features due to be announced prior to it’s release, I’m willing to bet on a big firmware also appearing at either e3 or gamescom-there’s usually something at one of them… The last of us remastered and games like drive club and the order will only push it further and we don’t actually know when uncharted 4′s due nor what many of the other studios are even doing….

  • PhantomVash808

I expect sales to be down for April since most of the games releasing this month are digital Indie titles. However expect sales to jump in May with the releases of MLB 14 The Show, Wolfenstein and Watch_Dogs which will even be bundled with the PS4.

    • Craig Sloan

If PS4 gets TLOU Remastered and Driveclub in June ( As is predicted by some ) expect them to move all units they have.

  • Jake Maze

Lmfao constraint my butt PS4 are collecting dust in stores bahahahaaha how lame

    • Xtreme Derp

PS4 is still supply constrained in several countries and in-store stocks.

      endlessly delusional and WRONG

      • Gannicus

its not supply constrainedin the UK I could buy one now for next day delivery from 3 major sites… unlucky and the UK is considered a major country for it

        • Bankai

Supply constrained and out of stock are 2 completely different things.

          • Gannicus

well if theres loads in the UK hardly supply constrained or there sending console to a country that doesn’t need that amount any more

          • Bankai

There aren’t loads in the UK, just like there aren’t loads in the US. The only place where that might be true is Japan.

          • Gannicus

if I wanted to buy one now I could… shows demand isn’t that high otherwise they would all be gone

          • http://Xcite79.1up.com/ Keegs79

no, it shows in that particular area demand isn’t high. You can’t count where you live as the whole demand for a country. Supply strained means that they can’t produce enough to fill every area. It doesn’t mean that some areas don’t have them.

          • Gannicus

I can actually yeah cus its on amazon.co.uk, play.com and zavvi which serves the whole of the UK so try again!!!

          • Gamez Rule

This is from Zavvi, “Availability: Stock will be despatched to you as soon as we receive it from our supplier.” So no it’s NOT in stock and hasn’t been for a while now. ( http://bit.ly/1kHqO2M )

Amazon PS4 is in stock for the 22nd April delivery date “Want it Tuesday, 22 April? Order it within 50 hrs 46 mins and choose One-Day Delivery at checkout” ( http://amzn.to/1hS60oF )

Play . com are also the same times as amazon which is in stock for the 22nd April delivery date ( http://bit.ly/1eGJ6AR )

So yes you can buy a PS4 but not have it till a later date, while the Xbone you can go to shops right now and pick them up. This shows demand IS high for PS4 otherwise they would all be under the 24hr delivery services like Xbone is right now.

          • Gannicus

            http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-PS4-PlayStation-4/dp/B00BE4HOIM/ref=sr_tr_sr_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397813495&sr=8-1&keywords=ps4

Want it tomorrow, 19 April? Order it within 4 hrs 26 mins and choose One-Day Delivery at checkout… its cus amazon standard delivery is a few days and cus you have to take sunday as no delivery day and also Saturday might be a no delivery day to some of the islands

            http://www.play.com/Games/PS4/4-/47092436/Sony-PlayStation-4-PS4-Console-With-500GB-HDD/Product.html?searchstring=ps4&searchsource=0&searchtype=allproducts&urlrefer=search

In stock | Shipping now Standard Deliver 23rd-25th… covering themselves incase royal mail or whoever they send it by doesn’t get it to ya quickly also pends on what postage there using
ok zavvi hasn’t got it in stock but when you can buy from amazon or play and potentially get it tomorrow… who cares so weldone for not reading stuff properly

          • Gamez Rule

Amazon still showing 22nd april on your link?. Argos shows PS4 in stock, yet london store has no PS4s on thursday even when showing in stock.

But like I stated, PS4 is in high demand and GAME / ASDA / Tesco = no PS4s yet loads of Xbones are in those stores. There is just a higher demand for PS4 than Xbone.

          • Gannicus

yeah but saying there sold out everywhere is complete BS, also there a lot more people in London, I bet if you drove 30 minutes out of London to the nearest town with an argos you can prolly pick one up no problem, also amazons standard delivery is 2-5 days I think so as long as you order by a certain time itll be there, there just covering themselves I bet if you look tomorrow itll say the 23rd instead of 22nd

          • Gamez Rule

“So where is all this there sold out everywhere coming from”…

You tell me as I haven’t seen articles saying so. What I have seen is “supply constraints” which is not the same thing, but fact remains that PS4 is in my demand than Xbone. Maybe that’s why shops have sold out of PS4s more so than Xbone.

          • Gannicus

of course it is its being sold in twice as many markets as well so of course it will

          • Gannicus

or http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1222540.htm goto the shop and its instock in the 10 stores near to me right now so if I wanted 1 I could get in my car drive there buy it and be playing on it within 1 hour… yeah no stock anywhere!!!

          • http://Xcite79.1up.com/ Keegs79

            Ha wrong comment.

Try again what? I am not trolling. I have a Xbox One. Don’t get on snobby with me. What I said was just common sense. You can and can’t find it in some places. Think about it.

          • Gannicus

yeah but the UK is 4 countries under 1 and seeing as there online retailers anyone can get one so there!!!

          • http://Xcite79.1up.com/ Keegs79

            So there? LMAO! Ok.

          • such.wow

Amazon don’t have them in until the 22nd, so try again.

          • Gannicus

so why does it say instock? when it says get it on 22nd April that means when itll arrive at your house. When it says a delivery date that’s the estimated date you will get it at your house. Congratulations for not understand ing anything. Seeing as it saying to me right this second “Want it Monday, 21 April? Order it within 21 hrs 54 mins and choose One-Day Delivery at checkout”

That means ill get it Monday if I ordered it by 1pm tomorrow with choosing 1 day delivery which occurs an extra fee for shipping

          • such.wow

It’s been the 22nd for days, I posted this on NeoGAF about a week ago that it’ll be in on the 22nd. In stock.

Want delivery by Tuesday, 22 April?

Order it in the next 21 hours and 52 minutes, and choose One-Day Delivery at checkout.

          • Gannicus

standard delivery 2-5 days, sunday is no delivery day

          • such.wow

It’s been the 22nd for days (over a week I think).

          • Gannicus

ah right, can still just goto argos right now and get one or get one from asda or Tesco off there online site for pickup in store the next day. So where one site fails theres always somewhere else to go, tis the whole point of multiple outlets :d

          • such.wow

My apologies, I was wrong, it was back in stock on the 21st on Amazon UK.

            http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=108108363&postcount=94

          • Gannicus

don’t need to get info from them bunch of whinging @rseholes… with there selective accounts. Trust the sites

          • Bankai

If I wanted to buy one I couldn’t, which shows that demand is still high, otherwise they’d be in stock.

          • JustGaming

They are in-and-out of stock all over the UK, otherwise they wouldn’t be putting up ‘back in stock’ posters up in my local stores every other week. There is also an economic situation here that is affecting ALL sales of hardware and software, so it’s no wonder that some places have it in stock.

Waaaaaaay more XBones and Wii U consoles on shelves in my experience.

          • such.wow

You keep saying the UK, not all of it, especially in shops.

That chalkboard is destined to end up broken and turned into ashes and dust, much as dat xbone. Red ring part 2, this time the failure is from the entire xbox division, not just the horribly engineered console.

  • http://www.storix.com/blog.html Rick Chatham

I can’t imagine Sony is purposely constraining supply. There are plenty of stories of people going to buy the machine, not finding it, and getting XBone instead. I think they legitimately didn’t expect sales this big. The #s are twice as large as last generation.

    • datdude

Who shows up wanting a ps4 and ends up settling for an xbone? Who are these monsters of which you speak? Seems highly illogical to me. You know what they say, good things come to those who wait. PS4.

      • Sexy Mcgee

I actually know 2 people who were desperate for a next-gen console but settled for an Xbone instead because they couldn’t find a PS4. One has bought a PS4 since then and the other says he’ll trade Xbone in when he finds one.

        • datdude

Man, I don’t know anybody who makes up their mind to purchase one product then settles for another because their number one choice is not available at the moment. A little patience is perhaps needed?

        • lolong

Problem is xbone is not a “next-gen console”. Too weak

          • Gannicus

neithers PS4 there both to weak

      • Fusion_Pirate

If I hadn’t pre-ordered my Amazon launch bundle, I would have waited until I could procure a PS4 otherwise. I would NEVER have settled for ::shudder:: an Xbone!

  • RearXboned

I love how everyone calls the Xbox One the Xbone. I’m soaking it all up. It’s like they cant fight it and came to accept the term being boned. This is hilarious, it’s a great time for Sony fans.

        • shinitaru

Yeah, same here. No attempt to sugar coat or downplay, just a solid, respectable “Hey, looks like I was wrong”

  • Rodger Princeton

I am very surprised that PS4 beat xbox one this month.. xbox had their poster child game come out bundled with a 50 dollar price reduction at almost all retailers, in their home country. I don’t want Sony to get to cocky and depend on 3rd party developers for their machine. Here is hoping E3 announces some good Original IP’s.

  • doom guy

DS has become fanboys war-ground in the recent months. Good 4Sony. Hopefully they can produce more units faster so more people can buy them.

  • Dennis Djoenz

By the summer? I hope I will manage to get a console before august in NL. It’s ridiculous how supply constrained it is. Me and my homies are thirsty for the console…a bit pissed off as well.

    • Gannicus

get one from England, theres loads over here

      • Dennis Djoenz

Yeah Ive been contemplating about that, unfortunately none of my friends are willing to import lol. All of my dutch friends are still on current gen. I might do though when I get some money. I have to pay about 50 euro extra or so and some shipping fee. Who knows.

Only one dutch dude I know has the ps4 and he is a casual cod player. Ghosts which is a terrible game.

        • Gannicus

yeah itll go by weight so pends on how heavy the box is and if they will ship to Europe. The console should detect what country your from through IP and ISP so its not like itll only be in English :d the only problem is if its dead on arrival unless you can phone sony to get a replacement, if you have to send it back to where you bought it from could be expensive

      • JustGaming

There’s loads of every console over here.

      • DemonFenton

Pictures or your lying and I hate liars.

        • Gannicus

go amazon.co.uk, play.com, argos.co.uk, Tesco.co.uk, asda.co.uk…. can get one tomorrow if I wanted, if I got form argos could get one well tomorrow now cus theyd be closed by the time I get there. unlucky nice trolling though

All the websites have them for sale. That’s not true at all.

  • foureyes oni

I honestly thought infamous would sell a bit more, like a million in the U.S. alone and several hundred thousand everywhere else. I figured it would put up more of a fight with titanfall for some odd reason. Then again titanfall has been hyped up,promoted like crazy, and also came out earlier so its not to surprising that it sold well, guess i was just hoping for a miracle.
