Sony’s Shu Yoshida Talks on the Value of Playing the Competition’s Games: “I’m a Very Good Customer”

by on April 24, 2014 7:03 PM 27

During a conversation moderated by PS4 Lead Architect Mark Cerny held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, on April 10th, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida talked about the value of playing games made by competing companies:

Cerny mentioned that Yoshida-san has quite the reputation as a gamer, but not just a PlayStation gamer, as he plays games from the competition and tweets aboout them, then he asked if that’s not counterproductive.

Oh no no, it’s very productive. The ideas can come from anywhere. I’m not making games, but I’m in the position to evaluate games, or to discuss with game creators who come up with new ideas. Some ideas might already exist in the market, and that could be applied, or changed or improved.

It’s always good to play games that other people are making, so that we get inspired.

Cerny then mentioned how Yoshida-san complimented a Nintendo game that will never appear on PlayStation, and Yoshida-san explained:

I own two Wii U. I actually try to own two units of all consoles that come out. One is to play US games and one to play Japanese games.

Actually I buy the competition’s hardware on the day it comes out. And when I cannot find in the the stores, I purchase them on  auction sites, so I typically spend a hundred dollars more of what they’re charging. I’m a very good customer.

Yoshida-san also explained how he was banned twice from Nintendo’s Miiverse, but that is already history. You can watch the whole conversation here. Believe me, it’ll be worth your time.

    That man is awesome.

Indeed!!! imagine my surprise when I finished The Legend of Dragoon for the first time and he was credited as the producer, almost surreal.

  • Craig Sloan

    He’s a cool guy.

    • Dennis Crosby

      He means Phil Spencer

      • Gamist

I thought he meant Phil Cerny. xD

      • Craig Sloan

Yeah lol, Thanks for not being an ass.

    • dranzer1

      Phil spencer you mean?

  • They Call Me Senpai

One does not simply dislike Shuhei Yoshida. You can try, but like drunk sex with a bar-hag, you’ll hate yourself for it in the morning.

  • Dennis Crosby

At the end of the day the big 3 need each other to succeed which makes them work hard for there fanbase. The only try winner of a console generation is gamers

    • Xtreme Derp

Competition will exist whether ms is in the market or not, no need for false parity.

    • born_naughty

No they don’t. We need the competition for them to make better products and be more competitive in pricing and such. They don’t need it at all.

  • dranzer1

    :/ I still don’t like his tactics.

    • Sucka Free

      What a surprise!

    • They Call Me Senpai

You mean actually listening to the consumers? Yeah, I hate when people listen to my feedback and learn from it.

    • superkarma

What don’t you like about his tactics? I mean, specifically. I’m curious.

    • superkarma

Psssst…I’m still waiting to hear about those specific tactics you don’t like. Surely you weren’t talking outta your ass just for the sake of being a fanboy, right? Surely I’m wrong about that.

    • Raven Nafariea

      I still don’t like your tactics either…

  • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

What was the Nintendo game he complimented? Yoshida could have at least told us that!

    • JustGaming

I’m sure I read somewhere that it was Super Mario 3D World, and rightly so.

      • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Indeed my friend. I’m almost done playing through that game I just have a few more levels to go and BANG!

        • JustGaming

I hammered it, want to go back to it though. There is no such thing as too much fun :)

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

cool! Question uh how hard the last few levels because I’m on the boss blitz level in world flower and have all the green stars up to that point and I want to prepare myself for the worst since I heard champions road is extremely hard? And yeah there’s never too much fun or too little when it comes to Nintendo.

          • JustGaming

Champions Road will test your patience, it certainly tested mine. And amen to that, it certainly deserves a second run :)

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

awesome! I love a challenge especially when it comes from Nintendo. no challenge is impossible for me. I can’t wait for what I see in the end after I get everything. Its not required to collect all the stamps right?

          • JustGaming

            …… Couldn’t possibly say ;)

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

            Right ;)
