PS Vita Might Get a Price Drop, According to “Road to Greatness” Contest Rules

When reading through Sony’s rules for their “Road to Greatness” sweepstakes, an interesting tidbit makes itself known: according to one particular section it seems the handheld might be getting a price drop:

PS VitaThe ARV (average retail price) states that the PS Vita is $179.99, which is strange since the official price in the Sony store hasn’t changed from $199.99. It might be a price drop planned for the near future but so far, no additional information has been revealed.

    That would be awesome!

I’m assuming this is for PS Vita 2000? Was the thing released on west yet?

    • Anime10121

Yep bout a week or two ago. It’s that Borderlands 2 bundle that’s been selling pretty well 🙂

    • Allisa James

Yep Anime10121 pretty much nailed it. And that would be awesome (as well as a memory card price drop).

  • They Call Me Senpai

The memory cards are the main issue, but if people can buy the system cheaper, then it’s still a win.

Speaking of the Vita, I don’t see why Sony doesn’t go around finding third party games to port to it. Sony could have taken a game like Bound by Flame, ported it to the Vita and cut a deal with the developers (and parent company) for a percentage of the profits.

That way, the Vita would have a steady stream of AAA games and more people would go out and buy one.

    • Nicholas Perry

Sony doesn’t know what to do. The Vita simply isn’t powerful enough for full scale games like that without a bunch of trickery and cut-downs.

Managing native resolution and a stable framerate that doesn’t drop below 30FPS is already enough of a challenge that few seem to succeed with.

But yeah the memory cards are ridiculous. This isn’t 2004 anymore, when a 1GB MS Pro Duo was 130$+ And that wasn’t even a close proprietary format specifically for the PSP.

      • They Call Me Senpai

The studio that ported over Injustice managed to get it working by removing some minor objects in the background and dropping the resolution, so I figure Sony could do the same. Even Borderlands runs pretty well and that’s far bigger and more hectic than a 2.5d fighting game.

Borderlands is watered down alot. They could not even accomplish the 4 player they promised lol. Back grounds missing.

    Good eyes

      Thanks! 🙂

  • E3 is just around the corner…

  • Johnnie

I’m betting that SKU would be the slim.

  • Homer Ruglia Beoulve

People, this is what we call “gaining grounds to compete with a rival”. Sony, you have tons of catching up to do and do it step by step. Don’t rush things.

  • joel

lol 20 dollars is not going to do anything.

Sony themselves killed the vita, by over hyping the hardware.

Many more reasons also like the placement of the analog stick, tend to make my hand cramp up.

Those memory card rip off prices. Talk about limiting consumer.

  • Mus1ckFPS

i asked a friend why he didnt have a PS Vita and he said the main reason was because it required him to buy an overpriced memory card

  • neko working

i bet they will release vita 3000 soon.

  • Orichalon Hades

Say what you will about the Vita, but im enjoying it immensely at this point.
All demz JRPG’s, Toukiden, SS:D, Warrior Orochi, and not too mention there’s a lot of game getting localized for Vita such as SAO, Akiba’s Trip 2, ToH R, and many others.

(now if only they can reduce the price on the Memory Card or let us use non-proprietary cards, that would be perfect)

    • Rahxephon91

What are all these jrpgs for the Vita? The most highly respected one is a PS2 port. Then there’s stuff like Ys and……..

I’m not sure what all this talk about the Vita and jrpgs is about. I guess if you like cheap fair like what NIS puts out, but if you want more then that you’re out of luck.

      • Dangonronpa 😀

        • MrFinalgamer

          That’s a visual novel =P

      • MrFinalgamer

I’m sorry, how are the games that NIS put out cheap? Have you seen the sprite work on those games? OH THEY’RE IN 2D, SO OBVIOUSLY IT’S CHEAP! FFS, and most of the RPGs on the Vita are very action oriented, to the point of being part of the hunting genre (although the story in both SS, and FW seems good enough to consider it an RPG IMO).

        • Rahxephon91

Having a good story dosen’t make you an rpg….Those are hunting games made in the wake of MH, not jrpgs.

NIS sprite work is nothing great and they are just cheap otaku pandering animu crap that I don’t want to play.

          What else is there?

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1-These games are shit on the PS3. Otaku pandering loli crap. I wouldn’t want to play them on the PS3.

Persona 4 Golden-Yes a good game, but a port of a game I played years ago on the PS2.

Final Fantasy X-X2 HD-Yes great games that I already have the PS3 version. Nice to take them on the go I guess.

          Mind Zero-Looks like cheap crap.

Conception II-A Terrible Persona wanabe with pervy otaku crap.

Demon Gaze-A cheap looking and pervy laden dungeon crawler. Don’t know much about it honestly, but it looks bad and was trashed in reviews.

Ys: Memories of Celceta-Yeah a good game.

Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention-Yeah, no.

Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited-I don’t want to play crappy animu srpgs.

Muramasa Rebirth-Is this an rpg? It’s good, but I wouldn’t say it’s an rpg. Same with Dragon’s crown.

Valhalla Knights 3-This series has always been crap, but apprantly this is the worse one. But it’s ok! We added extreme fanservice to compensate. Pass.

And that’s it. That’s a pretty terrible list. Sure Tales of Hearts and that other Sony Bloodlines something jrpg are coming, but there’s nothing impressive about this list of jrpgs. The 3DS is far far better in offering quailty jrpgs then the Vita. So I’m not sure where the Vita got this notion of having tons of jrpgs. Half of them look like crap and the good ones are ports.

          • Nailed it. Though, Disgaea 3 is better than you might think. Dragon’s Crown lacks the story depth to be considered an RPG in my opinion.

  • Duke

I am still waiting for that PS Vita Digimon game, that looked awesome. I just hope it comes to the western regions too though.

  • Necro

You dont need to drop the price of the Vita. DROP THE PRICE OF THE MEMORY CARDS. Those prices are unacceptable. For the same type of card, you can get a standard SD for half the price and even less some times. Drop the price. Bring them down to the price of the normal SD

  • Nordu

What the vita really needs is a Monster Hunter game.

    • Josh Melton

Yup, that and deliver on their promise of Vita being able to run PS1 and PS2 catalog. Not sure how Sony drop the ball ):

  • MrFinalgamer

Nice, one of my many predictions for the Vita might be happening. Hopefully the release of the 64gb card, along side a price reduction of them comes along too…And InFamous Vita, and Final Fantasy Type-0!

  • CervantesPR

Thie vita us such an awsome handheld, very underated handheld. Cant wait for freedom wars

  • Digimon Cyber Sleuth will sell systems, mark my words!!

  • PhantomVash808

Sweet good thing I was waiting for E3 for Sony to announce a better bundle. Now I will be able to get it for $20 cheaper.

  • Josh Melton

That is a joke, and should not even be considered a price drop.

  • gimmegimmekevin

At this point I think a Vita Go model that is like $150, much smaller screen to cut costs like 3.8-4 inches and an microSD slot would help turn around things, especially if bundle with Minecraft whenever that hits.

    • chimpmeister

Doubtful, the PSP Go was a failure, so the slim Vita is all you’re going to see for the foreseeable future. People don’t want smaller screens, they want larger ones on mobike devices (just look at cellphone trends). I love the Go, own 4 of them, but even I know it didn’t succeed.

  • gimmegimmekevin

Anyone else notice the fact that the camera is priced $10 higher in this doc too?

I bet most of the people on here trashing the Vita have probably never played it. If you’re thinking about getting one, I say go for it. Those complaining about the prices of the memory cards are either cheap or broke and have no business owning a Vita.
