April NPD Results for Microsoft: Leads Software Sales in U.S., Xbox One Sales Outpace Xbox 360

by on May 15, 2014 7:00 PM 40

Microsoft released their NPD results for April, which reveals some good news for the company concerning software sales, as well as where the Xbox One stands compared to the Xbox 360.

Microsoft continues to lead in cumulative generation eight software sales for both systems with 2.6 million games sold, holding eight out of the top ten spots for generation eight and generation seven console game lists in the U.S. Those games were: Titanfall (Xbox One/360), Kinect Sports Rivals (Xbox One), Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox 360), NBA 2K14 (Xbox 360), Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox 360), Minecraft (Xbox 360) and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (Xbox 360).

Xbox One sold 447,000 games in April and Xbox 360 sold 2.2 million, totaling 53 percent of the total software market share.

As for hardware sales, the Xbox One has also sold 115,000 units in April, which is over 76 percent more units than the 360 in the same time period.

    awesome!!…..good job Ms!!!

The Xbox brand is doing well

    • Jordan

      Lol. If you say so.

      • Dan

Well stated rebuttal, did you write that on paper first so your well thought out point and counter point could have the best delivery? Or perhaps you did some market analysis and laid out gains and losses in terms of gross rev net rev and net profit. Touché well done friend.

On topic: I keep hearing people (Sony fanboys) say with all this hate online NO one will buy the X1 and yet it’s still selling well especially considering a lower price slightly (don’t be fools you know it’s true) more powerful system is available. So perhaps all the haters don’t realize MS aka the scary bad mean headed wolf brings things to the table.

Oh wait that’s right, PS+ is the reason PS 4 owners aren’t buying games. Good luck with that. I don’t know anyone who spent that kind of dough for small downloadable games.

        • V For Vincennes

Yeah, because the supposed system mover, the lord and savior of the Xbox One is really impressive in the technical department. What is the One bringing to the table?

          • Dan

It’s funny you say that because what it proves is that the next gen is not about cutting edge graphics, it’s about cutting edge gameplay. And so far THATS what the X1 is bringing to the table. Though so is Killzone 5 and infamous 3…oh wait.

          • V For Vincennes

Cutting edge gameplay doesn’t mean squat to me when its being completely obliterated by embarrassing technical flaws. And with all due respect, spare me your rhetoric concerning the PS4. I don’t own one, and don’t care about its titles. I know firsthand about the One, and all that it screws the pooch at.

          • Dan

I’ve only played to level 55 on TF, and I’ve had no issue getting there (technically speaking), is it perfect no, nothing is friend, but the X1 is great and offers its owners plenty. I’m sorry if you’ve had trouble but most that have played it love it.

          • V For Vincennes

My apologies. Sometimes my aggressive enthusiasm can get the best of me.

Functionally, is the One better than it was six months ago? Absolutely. Should it have had to spend those six months playing catch up with features just to bring it on par with the 360? Likely not.

But I digress. Its just easy to become frustrated as of late.

          • Dan

For sure man. Let’s hope the speed of improvements accelerates and we see some awesome improvements, E3 will set the tone for the rest of the year

          • You are flat out wrong

The f*ck’s cutting edge about Tituhfuhh and Ryse?

        • Jordan

Explain to me how Ps+ is the reason why it’s consumers aren’t buying games?? Your logic seems flawed from the very beginning. There are many variables like F2P titles, indie titles, discounted digital titles or how about the obvious lack of big game releases apart from MLB: The Show on PS4. There is still support for Ps3 games as well. What you seem to not understand is NPD does not count digital based sales. And from my understanding, Infamous SS outsold Titanfall(X1) for the month of april while the Ps4 is pulling ahead with a lead over 3 million units globally.

Can you seriously explain to me how the Xbox One isn’t doing a piss poor job? Their last attempt to majority affect console sales by dropping the kinect, the price, paywall, and copying the PS+ model in only 6 months of it’s launch is a sight for desperation.

Your first redundant paragraph was amusing.

        • superkarma

It’s not selling well at all. It’s actually selling very poorly, at the moment. Why do you think Microsoft was forced to do such radical changes these past few days? Just for the hell of it? You think if it was selling well, they would completely abandon the Kinect, remove the paywalls, and change their Games with Gold policies to reflect the PS+ model? You can’t honestly be that delusional.

In 4 months, from January to April, the X1 sold just over 1 million units. Now that NPD numbers reveal it only sold another 115,000 units in the US (Xbox’s strongest market) in April, it’s safe to assume the other 12 regions didn’t sell all that much…so from April to May it’s maybe 200-300k more units? That’s anywhere from 1.2-1.5 million units in 5 months. That’s just awful, especially when compared to PS4′s roughly 1 million sales each month.

PS+ is the reason PS4 owners aren’t buying games? What? Not even sure what you were attempting to say with that, but I’m sure it was equally as idiotic as your previous claims.

          • Jordan

I’m sure he’ll add, well the playstation 4 was 100 dollars cheaper: Well the Xbox one has Titanfall/Forza bundles running for $450(that’s $10 cheaper than Ps4 and 1 retail game). If the console is $399 I doubt it will ever have a bundled game at least for right now. Whereas Ps4 could always bundle Killzone Or even Infamous in the near future.
The Ps4 is released in 40 more countries: Yes but these countries make up a very small percentage of overall sales. Even if the Xbox One was released i would bet it would continue to get outsold by the Ps4. The only influence it would have is the price. For example, In Canada the Ps4 is $450 and the Xbox One is $399.
Or he’s just trolling. I don’t know. I don’t care. I doubt he even owns an Xbox.

          • superkarma

Exactly. I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what his argument will be, actually. Like you said, those other regions aren’t exactly well known for being Xbox loyalists. The Playstation brand is much, much more popular overseas than the Xbox brand. The fact is, Microsoft launched in 13 countries, yes…but you better believe those were its strongest 13 countries. Microsoft would not have launched first in regions it didn’t forecast high sales from.

Not to mention, how many price drops did the X1 get from retailers these past few months? It seemed like every other week a handful of retailers were doing price drops and bundles, some even cheaper than the PS4. But yet, the X1 still only sold roughly 1.2-1.5 million in 5 months.

We all know X1 will rebound. The PS3 launch was awful, but it still managed to rebound and do great down the road. The X1 will be the same. But for fanboys to simply refuse facts and deny that the X1 is currently struggling and doing very poorly…that’s just sad.

          • Jordan

            Yup, i agree.
The Xbox ONE imo will never sell overall more units than the Ps4, but it will do well enough for whatever it needs to accomplish. Sony learned from their mistakes last generation. Microsoft has spent more than a decade learning from theirs. Everything they have done has been one mess after another.

    • Xtreme Derp

The Xbox brand is not doing well.

      • Vious

        How so?
To me making more than 50% of the console market $ for the past 5 years IS doing well.
For a brand to be profitable for 6 years is pretty good.
If you’re going to bring up the loss for original Xbox go right ahead like you always do. Then you’re going to show how the Playstation brand is “profitable” because of the ps1 like you always do….
But the Xbox wasn’t even on the scene yet. If you should should take it where the Xbox one came in and calculate from there, how does the Playstation brand hold up?

  • Jamal

Good news, I enjoy this game very much

  • Jimmy DoneGood

Absolutely incredible for Xbox 360. 9 out of 10 best seller. Most people I know are happy with 360 but will move to X1 when the time is right. Sony themselves are in trouble financially. Don’t know what will happen to them.

    • They Call Me Senpai

Nothing will happen to them, even with their financial trouble they’re still doing a better job than Microsoft. But keep trolling, it just shows how pathetic you are.

      • Dario Antonio Puello Lugo

The ps4 is selling so well but still the games division reported losses in the whole fiscal year.
        http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-05-14-sonys-game-division-reports-full-year-loss

        • superkarma

Are you an investor? Why do you care about the company’s profit/loss?

          • Dario Antonio Puello Lugo

            because profit/loss can impacts the future of the ps4.and NO i m not a investor,only a gamer :D

          • superkarma

Well, Sony didn’t post a profit for almost 5 years straight…but still:

            - Launched a new console that blew away its competition by a big margin
            - Put out excellent exclusives on the PS3 throughout those no-profit years
            - Managed to overtake Microsoft in its own home market

…and the list goes on. If Sony managed to survive almost 5 years of no profit and still do all those things in the gaming industry, they will have absolutely no problem now…when they are absolutely dominating the market/industry.

          • L__S

Sony has this high loss because of their restructuring.

          • Vious

            No.

          • superkarma

Yes. Anyone with common sense in business knows that’s why they have a high loss this year/quarter.

          • Vious

So they were also restructuring last year too and the year before that also right? They’ve been restructuring for about 5 years now I guess. Good to know. Maybe business common sense isn’t that common after all.

          • superkarma

Notice how I said “this year/quarter”. I thought that pretty much implied I was talking about THIS year/quarter. Maybe common sense isn’t that common for you, after all.

As for the nearly 5 years of no profit, that’s due to unpopular Sony products in already declining industries. Hence, why Sony finally wised up and sold off those bad divisions.

          • Vious

Wasn’t looking at that. At work so didn’t read fully. But can you point out how is it that the restructuring THIS year caused that loss even after all the sell off…or that’s what you’re making reference to as restructuring?

          • superkarma

Because those divisions still lost money. The biggest being the PC division, which they finally sold. Sony is a huge company. They are in way too many markets for todays world. Back in the day, it worked in their favor, because it was a different time and those industries were booming.

PC sales are down (especially Sony branded PC’s), physical media sales are down, TV sales are down, camera sales are down, etc. Sony has far too many divisions than it needs. Not only do the low sales affect their losses (obviously) but so does the R&D costs for the products they release in those divisions. Not to mention, the actual costs of restructuring the company itself.

That’s more or less why Sony has been in such trouble these past years. Idiotic trolling and nonsense aside, Sony was/is simply in too many industries than it should be. Even though they are reporting losses, they will not be going anywhere any time soon. They will continue selling off the bad divisions and keep the ones that work in their favor. Just as it should be.

Derp Console launches are not cheap….

          • Dario Antonio Puello Lugo

I know that launching a new console is expensive, but Xbox one expend a lot more and dont report loss. That something weird.

          • Jordan

Xbox is listed under their devices division. I don’t think they have an individual “xbox” division. I could be wrong.

    • Michael Norris

Geez you guys are like roaches you squash one and 50 more takes its place.

    • Xtreme Derp

Oh look, another constantly wrong fanboy lining up for a big plate of crow when Sony doesn’t go bankrupt. It’s sad that Microsoft fanboy shills are so desperate that their only hope is for Playstation to disappear completely instead of continuing to dominate Xbox in sales. Keep crying and shilling while everyone else ignores you and keeps buying PS4s.

PS4 will have the graphics advantage the entire gen. PS4 hardware and software will outsell Xbox globally the entire gen. PS4 will have more dev support and more 1st party games the entire gen. Sony still has a large number of 1st party studios and they’re all working on PS4 games. PS4 will make a net profit, Sony won’t go bankrupt.,
