New PS4 and PS3 Models Revealed by Certification Request Filed by Sony

The PS4 has just been launched a few months ago, but Sony might already be planning to launch a new model of its new console. The manufacturer filed for the registration of two new “Computer Entertainment Systems” with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of the Republic of Indonesia.

The filing, listed on the official website of the Directorate of General Resources and Equipment of Post and Information Technology, bears the model number CUH-1106A. This seems to indicate an evolution of the console, but not a radical redesign like the passage from the PS3 slim to the super slim, for instance, which is normally indicated by an incremental change of the first number of the code (the slim was launched with the model number CECH-2001A, while the super slim started with CECH-4001A).

Currently the Asian version of the PS4 has the code CUH-1006A. The incremental change of the second digit to CUH-1106A seems to indicate an evolution akin to the passage from the first model of the PS3 slim equipped with a 65nm RSX graphics chip (CECH-2001A) to the second model eqiopped with a 40nm one (CECH-2101A).

The number also seems to exclude a simple evolution in the size of the hard disk, as that would be indicated by the change of the letter at the end of the code (CUH-1006A would become CUH-1006B).

In addition to this Sony also filed for the certification of a second system with the code CECH-4306CH, which seems to be a similar evolution of the PS3 super slim model. This comes just days after the PS3 super slim was discovered to be sold out at many major retailers online, indicating an interruption or at least a slow down in shipments and sparking rumors of a possible new SKU to be announced at E3.

Of course this should be considered a rumor until Sony makes an official announcement, but in this case the numbers normally don’t lie. We’ll have to stand by and see if anything about this will surface at E3 in just a couple weeks, and if the new models will result in any new feature or possible drops in price.

China doesn’t need a censored game console..

    • Giuseppe Nelva

China is just the place where the consoles are manufactured.

      • Raven Nafariea

He never makes much sense. =P

  • Izhan Shafiq

FYI super slims started with CECH-400X

    • Giuseppe Nelva

      Good catch, changed that

  • Raven Nafariea

I am not really sure what more Sony could do to improve the look or design of the PS4. I love how it looks; it is so sleek and sexy looking. Making it smaller I think would take a lot away from that look.

    • Oxybelis

      They won’t. Yet.

These new models are built to be compatible with same chassis. They just modified motherboards and some chips.

      • Giuseppe Nelva

Bingo. Most probably a cost reduction (at least for Sony) and possibly less heat/power consumption for us if they change the manufacturing process of the chips.

        • Jecht_Sin

Yup. That’s “PC technology” after all. The chips are supposed to get smaller and cheaper. Not to mention that the GDDR5 memory is getting cheaper as well. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a $50 price drop for the PS4 as soon as the supply passes by far the demand. Or, who knows? A 1TB model at the same cost soon.

          • The Real Rick Grimes

Or if MS keeps dropping the price on their sorry ass system. lol

          • i heard they were giving away the Xbox One for free on amazon and no one still wanted it.

          • Dimitri Theodosakis

For Rumor PS4 New Model My bet 1TB Hard Drive PS4 Priced 499.99, For Rumor PS3 New Model My bet 1TB Hard Drive PS3 Priced 269.99&500GB Hard Drive PS3 Priced 209.99&80GB Flash PS3 Priced: 149.99

          • Mr_JtowN

Why would they drive the price up a $100 for a PS4 with a 1TB HDD when I can get a 1TB for less than $50? They mine as well bundle the PS camera in there while they’re at it.

          • CJ99

Considering microsoft already announced a $100 XB1 price drop by selling kinect separate this makes the most sense.

    • Boerewors

Well they could start with replacing the 500gb HDD with at least a 1tb one. And for the new ps3 I expect it to be in the same style as the ps4, but even smaller.

      • Raven Nafariea

Seems like replacing the HD with a 1tb would just make the price go up. Since there is the option to replace the HD already I would think it be better to keep it the way it is so the price will stay low and that way it will give you the option where instead of sinking extra money in a more expensive system to opt to take that money and spend it on a HD of your choice. Not all HD’s are the same. When I got my PS4 I immediately bought a 1tb Hybrid Solid State Drive and it greatly sped up my PS4 way more then if Sony would had just added a standard 1tb HD.

    • IncognitosX

I personally don’t like the fact that the back of the unit is angled. When I first set it up in my media cabinet I found it difficult to blindly plug in wires. I agree with you on the size. If you have a component system all the pieces are typically the same size, any smaller and it would look out of place. It could stand to be a bit more quiet though but to be fair I don’t find it to be a big issue. One thing is for sure, I will be jealous of the new system just because it’s new.

    • albatrosMyster

They could ship it with a revised ds4 controller (better battery) and the console itself could be less noisy when under heavy load.

      • Raven Nafariea

Weird, I never had any problems with the battery life in my controllers. I know some people have though, I am always for longer batter life that is for sure!

    • Dario Antonio Puello Lugo

More cheap plastic like “Super Slim” PS3?

      • Amido

Super, uber, hyper, ps3 ultra slim with nano lasers of blu ray

    • ipot_04

I think it’s too soon for a slim version.

      • Raven Nafariea

Same here, I would think they would pull out the slim versions whenever the popularity takes a dip. Probably in the next two to three years I would think.

        • Furkan

This isn’t that big of a change, it is an internal change like when the original PS3 got rid of flash card slots and backwards compatability, still looked the same. I think they are just improving the internals a bit, maybe a bigger hard drive and some new colors.

      • Karl

Its not a slim, and they are not changing the look of it except for the fact of an antenna that will come with better Wi-Fi receiving technology in order to get faster speeds on the internet. This was mainly because of the excessive speed recommended for the PlayStation Now which you needed 3GB/s of speed, and that was the least you needed for. I think it was 5GB/s, but I’m not sure. Though that is really fast internet that you need and more money per month just for the internet service.

    • tylerc23

I can’t either. I think that whatever they do, not this time around but when the PS4 starts getting his Slim predecessors, the design will have influences of the Original but it may have an improved design. Just like the fat PS3 to the PS3 Slim. To me the PS3 Slim is the true PS3, don’t know why but I do. Maybe that will be the case for the next PS4, which I will also purchase.

      • Raven Nafariea

I still have my Fat PS3 from when it first came out. I never had any problems with it and it has been quiet as a kitten. I did replace the HD in it several years ago but it has stood the test of time. I just can’t bare to part with it.

My mom has the slim version and it is pretty loud when she plays it. I almost bought a slim one just for the look but I am glad I didn’t now. It might just be hers though because I have another Fat PS3 I bought a few years later and that thing sounds like a jet engine starting up when you play on it. I put it down in my dining room just to use it for Netflix while I eat but sometimes you can not even hear the show I am watching it is so loud. lol

        • Gamist

Um… do you live at PlayStation? :p

          • Raven Nafariea

Haha, no but I guess it seams like it. lol I have three PS3’s my mom has two of them. I have a PS4 and my mom has one as well. She has a Wii, I have a Wii, and a Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and Game Cube. Then we each have a gaming PC. I might have left something out but I am not sure. lol

          • Gamist
        • chrisredfield31

it’s just the system. I have a slim (the one w/ an auto load) from 2011 and it’s still quiet.

        • Tony Viet Hoang

You might want to open up the loud PS3 and clean the inside. Especially the fan since it might be very dirty/dusty and it’s putting a load on the fan. I have the 80gb(upgraded to 320gb) version since day 1 with it’s PS1 and PS2 backward compatibility. I still have the fat PS2 also.

    • Nick Gonzalez

      Different colors?

      • Raven Nafariea

That would be awesome! Id like a white one or pink myself. =)

        • Nick Gonzalez

I’ll take a blue one to go with my blue DS4:)

          • Raven Nafariea

Nice, blue would rock also! I would probably totally buy a new one if it came in different colors. haha

    • Saxhleel
      • Raven Nafariea

        Just sexy <3

      • Karl

HAHAHAHA!!! Were did you manage to find this?

    • XbotsAreCorporateScumbags

I totally agree.. I don’t see how they can even make it smaller and you’re right, It would change the design.

IMO all the original models of playstation look better than their updated skus with the only exception being the PS3 Slim (not superslim).

    • Tony Viet Hoang

Don’t the Far East countries’ systems have different model numbers anyway versus the U.S models?

    • Karl

Oh, they are not. They want to improve the memory space of the PS4 because so many people have already filled up the 500GB space, plus an improvement to the Wi-Fi tech that the previous PS4 systems had in order to help boost the speed of their lagging service of PlayStation Now. In which this new Wi-Fi tech will certainly improve our overall internet speed then just that service. 🙂 And if I believe that Sony stays with their $399 price for there better system, which I think will most likely happen then they will certainly make the Xbox One lose more many sales.

  • THU31

Maybe this one will be quiet.

    • tylerc23

      Mine is extremely quiet

    • MTM2

You think the PS4 is loud?

Try using a ‘fat’ 360. It’s like a jet has flown through your window. Amazed those things still managed to overheat.

      • SZaidH

True that ! When i inserted GTA V into my 360 , it roared like a Harley Davidson .

      • THU31

I know it is loud, I heard two different PS4s, and they were both loud. I had a Falcon Xbox 360 and it was also loud. The 360 Slim is quiet, and XBO is pretty much inaudible.
And I am not a fanboy, because I do not have any of the new consoles, as there is nothing to play on them at the moment. When there is, I will get both.

      • Karl

I don’t get it either because I have heard it and its really quiet though many people have complained that the PS4 is loud some even posted it on youtube. I just think that their just exaggerating to much and expect for their accommodations to be fulfilled.

    • lol another stealth xbox fail troll lol. Yeah my PS4 is as quiet as it can be. no problems with the fan, samething with the PS3 never had one problem with the fan being too loud or anything.

  • RealityCheck2013

I would buy both 😛 Even tho i don’t need both because i got both of them(the hmm older PS4(older already?!) 😀 & the PS3 slim that is i got)

  • JustGaming

They will not release an ‘improved’ slim PS4 any time soon, I will bet my bottom dollar on that. It would piss off a lot of early adopters, and that is surely something they can do without.

Unless they are planning to reduce manufacturing costs in preparation of a price drop…….

  • Mellow_Butch

They might add some feet so they don’t wobble, but we’ll see. I might have to pick up another one for my room.

  • Mellow_Butch

They could sneek a titan in there? lol… The PS3 update is the most interesting though, I think it will get 8 gigs a RAM just to better support PS Now.

  • Delsin Rowe

if that pic is true, then i have to save my money
looks like i’m going to buy another ps4.

    • Rickowned

      I know right?

      • Delsin Rowe

        Of course. it’s so lovely
maybe i’ll buy this one for myself, then give the other to my girlfriend, or my brother 😀

    • tylerc23

That is exactly what I said lol

      • Delsin Rowe

really ? i didnt see that. lol

  • SZaidH

    B-B-But i just bought a PS4 :S . My goodness i should i have waited !

  • Carl

I ‘d like to see a new PS4 with better thermals (for example, 90W of power to just watch a Blu-Ray disk movie is too much), but I doubt it, it ‘d need a new production line. Well, let’s see what thi is all about. E3 is upon us.

  • Orichalon Hades

huh, i wonder now if i should buy a PS4 this Christmas or just wait for the new model to be released.

  • someguy

looks like im buying a ps4 for my little brother by christmas

  • NoNeedToArgue

1TB PS4 is my guess. Either replaces $399 model or is $449

  • Christian Dixon

I don’t understand why people think the current design of the PS4 is perfect and can’t evolve. That’s just denial of reality. These new models this early are likely models with larger storage options.

  • paul mackay

Try changing the ps4 controllers instead I love my ps4 but the controllers are a joke mine was knackered within a month

    • superkarma

Try taking care of your belongings and you won’t have issues.

  • Rickowned

To me this looks more like some small minor updates and such just like the 5million and one versions of PS3 there were.

    Launch of PS3

Tiny HDD, No wireless internet, crap controller, huge power hungry heat machine, backwards compatibility

Then the next model look exactly the same but added wireless

after that I think is when they took out backwards compatibility

then the slim came along then the super slim

But at the same time as those were going on there was a number of different models for each one

  • Raoh shiro

They need to update there internal specs for 4k playback like, Sata 3, Wireless N ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and HDMI 2.0

Sata 3 and the new Wireless protocol would provide the bandwidth needed to stream 4k efficiently! They would do it if they want an advantage over other media set top boxes.

    • How many people do you know that have or can afford a 4k tv?

      • Rickowned

all those PC master race people seem to have 4k monitors… all 100,000 out of a few billion people

      • Raoh shiro

Get with the times, don’t be stuck in 95′!

  • Iain Chambers

Im guessing manufacturing cost savings so price drop to counter the Xbone with out connect Would be a slap in the face if Microsoft had to both drop the price and ditch kenect to keep up

  • TristanPR77

    This could mean

New models for the the China market

New models to present a new price $349 at E3 and completely kill Microsoft

    • tylerc23

I agree and said $350 as well

    • sdf

Th-That got me wet a little.

    • HomoGenic

they’re already completely killing microsoft’s console. the fact that people are able to buy an xbox one for $400, 6 months after its release by the way, just means they can pay the same price for the less powerful console instead of $100 more. they removed the insult, but we’re still left with injury. even if the xbox one was $299.99, why wouldn’t you just pay $100 more for the more powerful console that you’ll have for years?

after hearing sony is losing more money than they expected, i’m thinking they won’t reduce the ps4 price to $350, but if they do, then i’m glad i waited to buy one. then again, sony doesn’t have to do much to stay ahead, so who knows. E3 can’t come soon enough.

  • ISISSecretAgent

when they make a slimmer, power efficient ps4 ill swap my original for it

  • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

So based off this (besides establishing the possibly change in size and whatnot) the Blu Ray capacity allowed may increase from 50 GB to 100GB or even more for PS4 since games will be getting larger from this point forward. IF this is the case as it sounds, it makes me wonder why Nintendo couldn’t do a similar move by making a new SDK that allows them to use a larger version of their current 25 GB proprietary Optical Disc for Wii U and increase it to 50 or more (again, IF I’m interpreting the rumored and still unproven filing correctly)?

  • Jonathan Crout

wth ps4 is barely yearo ld new model god darn it i hope not especially if it reduces heat and is quiter cuz i jsut purchased extened protection plan from sony so im stuck with it cant flip in for upgrade model

  • tylerc23

I think we will see a (and I’m serious) Mega Slim PS3 with PS4 references like Gloss and Matte Black, also a light strip.
Also just a, I don’t want to say lower-end because it won’t be, but like a PS4 that will be $299-$350 that maybe has 350-400GB. Whatever they do to this new model PS4 it won’t affect the power or anything like that.

    • Josh Melton

Not sure? believe I could be wrong think Sony is losing money” on PS4 don’t expect them to price drop their current-gen console this year ):

      • nathan

there making a profit on ps4 around $15 if i remember right.

  • Raoh shiro

I’d buy it again if they simply added Wireless N ac and or HDMI 2.0, I wouldn’t to use another set top box for a good while!

If I’m not mistaken, didn’t SONY release a 4k media player that looks very similar to the PS4? Maybe they will update the specs to coincide with that?

  • chrisredfield31

45nm PS3 and dual band wireless PS4 along with some structural improvements of course

  • Guest

    Hahaha, $0N¥ going desperate.

    • spartan warrio

    • superkarma

      Yup…they sure are desperate. /sarcasm

    • hey moron. didn’t Microsoft drop the price to $400? trying to match PlayStation? lol. talk about desperation, i think Microsoft should just give it away for free though that is still not enough for me to get one or anyone else LMAO. #NoOneWantsAXboxOne

    • YroBalboa

Are you butthurt, because you dont see the kinectles xbone somewere in the bestsellers / preorders?

    • Loghorn

The one who’s getting desperate is Microsoft.

  • joe

Probably just a 1tb hdd varient of the PS4

    • EdwardJamesKenwayACIV

      Most likely Joe

  • The Real Rick Grimes

A bit curious but it can’t be that big of a change unless it’s architecture change down the road.

  • themugen

I wish it were possible to choose what color that colored strip on the ps4 is when on, etc. I like white, but wish it would be blue or even red, purple, yellow, etc. That’d be cool, imo.

  • nathan

i wish they would do sorta like apple and every 3 years release a up graded ps4 better graphics card better processor and so on. older ps4’s can still play future games but the newer ps4’s have better quality graphic’s and ability’s. doing this will keep the market fresh.

    • Shawn Schaitel

and just like apple after a few generations of product the old hardware would not be compatible with the new software

    • leo

no this will be pulling a SEGA. So NO.

  • PachterStation

    It’s internal changes only.

  • dapaintrain

Its pretty normal they obviously want to make better looking consoles and if they can make the same console thinner and lighter then why not?.

Plus this is pretty normal it would take like 2 years to plan and release it after all so in 2 years we may see a thin ps4 its pretty normal

  • dapaintrain

More then likely Sony will introduce cheaper chips to do the same job and increase or offer a wider varrity of HDD sizes.

This gen 50gb is like 20gb last gen i mean i have a launch ps4 and i already have used just under 400gb

I thought about putting a 1tb in but i thnk ill wait until its full and place a 2tb or 3 tb if they are released and reasonably priced.

I put a 1tb in my ps3 best decision i made along with ps plus

  • Bruce Wayne

    Maybe a 1tb model

  • gimmegimmekevin

I’m hopeful for an even smaller PS3 model but I’d be fine with a $150 SuperSlim with 250GB HDD. Can’t wait for E3.

  • swinny

Well, here’s to hoping they don’t waste to much time at E3 on these new SKU’s, I want to see game after game after game after game……………..!!!

  • You are flat out wrong

LOL Xmongs thinking the PS4 is being “redesigned.” If anything it’s a new SKU with a larger hard drive and a modified motherboard to drive down production costs.

  • Kim Marius Falch

Can’t they just sell the motherboard alone? and we can switch out the old one ourselves? they can sell it with instructions and in case * fainted heart* pay the store to do it? i would pay 400$ for a motherboard alone with better chip.

  • Budgiecat

Oh cmon thats way too soon dood…

  • Almighty-Koz

kinda hoping this is a revision to the chips which lowers cost, and i know its wishful thinking but maybe they will anounce a 50$ price drop at E3 to keep it cheaper then the X1

  • Loghorn

This will be good news for people like me, as I have yet to buy either the PS3 or the PS4.

  • Zachary Goterch

I could possibly see Sony upgrading the network cards on both revisions, seeing that playing online on the very much congested 2.4 Ghz network, which is what most devices in use by the public can still only use, can really slow down playing speeds for some people. Also, while we can only hope for this, Sony could also be thinking about upgrading the RAM on the PS3, though it’s impossibly unlikely. It would be nice though.

I never liked the look of the ps4. It could use a redesign.

  • Reducing manufacturing process size is a great move, akin to what manufacturers always strive to do in both PC and console designs. They’ll never stick to the original process when they can make a system cheaper to manufacture, consume less power and emit less heat.

I do expect a slim version sometime in the future. The small system on chip designs are only going to get smaller, so the excesses of plastic should reduce with that.
