Micro Review: MLB 14: The Show – Extra Bases

It’s amazing how realistic beards drastically improve a ballgame. A while ago I reviewed MLB 14: The Show on the PS3 and gushed about how the franchise still managed to top itself every year.

The only differences between PS3 and PS4 versions are purely visual. A massive polygon count and over 100 new animations, The Show is already hands down one of the best looking games on the PS3, and the PS4 version does not disappoint at all. The improved visuals really make the presentation truly stand out, while the opening ceremonies that I normally skip look glorious with television broadcast quality.

All the pros, even with the higher polygon count (over a millions and change from 150K), still look a bit stiff and comically lifeless in cutscenes. I’ve joked about the intense character customization options that are available to you in order to make monstrously unique looking professional ball players. Take a look at what Cobra in The Road to the Show looks like early in his career. He sorta went through a metal phase.

The load times are still painfully long — not as long as the PS3 version, though still noticeable. Playing online still has issues with lag and slowdown at the most inopportune times. There’s nothing worse than having the game stutter as a pitch is being thrown.

Thankfully with the cross-save feature I was able to transfer my rookie phenom via the cloud. I brought over the unstoppable right fielder Cobra Jimenez to the next gen halfway through his rookie year with the last place Baltimore Orioles, before he became involved in a heavily one-sided trade to the Central Division leader, the Detroit Tigers.

Much like our thoughts on Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition, MLB 14: The Show is already an amazing game with even more attention to detail. If you have already own a PS4 and a fan of baseball then picking up this version is a no-brainer.

Since I’ve already reviewed MLB 14: The Show for the PS3, I decided to do something a bit differently this time around by using the PS4′s Share feature. I hereby present the professional slideshow of future Hall of Famer, Cobra Jimenez. Enjoy!

Wow, that video does look like it’s taken from an actual broadcast.
