Video game artists don’t just have to work on the titles they are involved in professionally, but they also continuously hone and polish their skills with personal projects, that often end up being extremely interesting concepts or even amazing fan art.
Today we’ll feature two very different artists with something in common. They both work at Naughty Dog and they both create amazing pieces of art both professionally and on their own time.
The first is Lead Character Artist Frank Tzeng, who worked on The Last of Us. Below you can see a gallery of his artwork, most of which done for the sake of personal improvement, including some really great fan art, and even a few bonus pieces made for Killzone: Shadow Fall.
His Kempachi Zaraki from Bleach and the Sci-fi redesign of Street Fighter’s Vega are nothing short of awesome, even if every single piece is a feast for the eyes.
The second is Eytan Zana, who worked on Uncharted 3 and The last of Us, and who dabbles in a whole different genre. His 2D paintings mostly show small characters surrounding by environments featuring a beautiful atmosphere.
There are also some bonus illustrations made for Magic: The Gathering cards and The Last of Us.
Keep in mind that you shouldn’t look for hints on Naughty Dog’s upcoming and unannounced games in their artwork. Artists that want to keep their jobs normally don’t “leak” any of that on their personal portfolios.
