Naughty Dog Working Hard to Push The Last of Us on PS4 Past 60 FPS and to Solve Performance Bugs

We’re little over a month from the release of The Last of Us Remastered on PS4, and the team at Naughty Dog is currently hard at work to improve performance and squash the last bugs slowing down the game, as mentioned by the resident star coder Corrinne Yu over Twitter.

We are coding hard over the weekends with our Naughty Dog graphics team to push The Last of Us past 60 fps.

Lead programmer Christian Gyrling is also working hard to squash the last performance bugs that are slowing the game down.

After 4 days of digging around in CPU/GPU traces I finally figured out what was slowing us down. On to the next perf bug! #TheLastOfUs#PS4

As an added bonus, Yu also shared more on the overtime she has to do to create the spectacular Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End trailer that impressed many at E3.

To graphics code head, face, Drake’s shirt for Uncharted 4 PS4 trailer, I slept over night at ND office many times. Such is reality.

Too often we forget that the gaming industry is a quite demanding working environment, and that the men and women at work on the games we love often spend nights and weekends at their desk to polish their code like a diamond. Maybe we should keep that in mind when we’re tempted to go out of our way to be nasty with our criticism of their work, which is something that I’m seeing way more than I’d like to, nowadays.

Long working hours often driven mostly by passion should definitely command a lot more respect than they do in certain internet-anonimity-driven environments.

Why would they work to set the game past 60fps if HDMI support 60 fps?

    • ragingmerifes

To give room for framerate locking, so it won’t suffer from drops and stuff. If you ask me, locked 30 is better than unlocked 60, so they should try their best to get locked 60. It’s great.

      • Giuseppe Nelva

        what he/she said.

        • Vious

      • HustyparmenCZ

famous xbot argument 🙂 but no, 60fps is always better than 30fps, nice try tho

        • Vious

unlocked 60 with lots of frame drops gives way for screen tearing and stutter. locked 30fps gives a much smoother gameplay than a 60fps that stutters and have screen tearing

          • Porcu Peth

i still prefer 60, even with drops.

          • BlackestNight63

Anything above 30 is always good, but a locked frame rate is definitely necessary.

          • Porcu Peth

            nah, i’m fine with unlocked.

          • Vious

oh, ok then, that’s what you prefer.

          • Neko Working

            why not locked 45fps ?

        • ragingmerifes

          “If you ask me”
          My opinion, not a fact.

    • Jacks Hit

I guess they want solid 60 fps, with no dips, if remaster gets 8vs8 mode with maps balanced to 8vs8 I’ll get PS4 in a heartbeat.

      • Craig Sloan

The maps are too small for 8v8 at most you’d get 6v6.

        • Blackmaile

An extension would of been nice on these maps it can happen and the multiplayer has proved popular enough to develop on & make alot of money with DLC

      • Giuseppe Nelva

They already said the number of players isn’t gonna change.

        • Blackmaile

Thats a damn shame. I thought 6 v 6 would of evolved the gameplay, No mention of a bonus survival mode either doubt that will ever happen. 🙁

      • Alkaporty

They already said they tried multiple number of players for the MP, and to keep to slow pace of the game 4vs4 was perfect and it was not a console limitation issue, but more of a gameplay one.

The problem isn’t the maps either, they just don’t want the pace of the gameplay altered.

    • Nicholas Perry

Performance Overhead for stability. They want to maintain 60FPS at all times without any drops. No crap perceptual 60FPS here like in CoD or unlocked unstable 60FPS like in Tomb Raider, Killzone 4 and other games.

      • They Call Me Senpai

You could lock the frame rate in Shadow Fall, though, the feature was patched in.

        • Nicholas Perry

You are very correct. But I was mostly referring to the unlocked mode is all 🙂

    • HDMI 1.3 is capable of 60Hz @ 1080p and 120Hz @ 720p. HDMI 1.4 has the bandwidth to handle 120Hz @ 1080p.

  • Our games are art

Thank you for all the hard work I’m preordering and I dont even own a ps4. Yet.. hail naughty gods!

  • superkarma

Very happy to hear this. This will definitely be a day 1 buy for me. I’ve already sold my PS3 copy, now I’m just waiting to get the PS4 copy 🙂

  • tylerc23

Yeah, people really got knock it off when they just go and bash games. They forget that there are a lot of people involved that put an extreme amount of time and effort into it and they gave up that time to work on the video game that they are bashing and could have used that time to see their families which a lot of them, when they are making a really big game, don’t really get to see a lot because of all the hours at work.

    • GodGamerDerp

Industry devs are some of the hardest working people in technology, often sleeping under their desks and working 18 hour days during crunch times. It’s disgusting that hard working devs are labeled “lazy” by certain upset fanboys.

      • Mikail

or becoming a troll if the games was delayed.

  • HustyparmenCZ

ok but how much they earn? 5000 – 10 000 bucks per month? Not a bad job if u ask me

    • Giuseppe Nelva

Your idea of the average game industry paycheck is an extremely gross overestimation.

      • HustyparmenCZ
        • Giuseppe Nelva

aside that those numbers are pretty arbitrary, I know many that earn less than that (a lot less), can you tell me in what realm of math 38,000/12 equals 5000?

          • Delsin Rowe

the land of the dead 😀

          • Rower

Why would the dead need to perform calculations?

          • Delsin Rowe

            they don’t. it was a sarcasm 😀

Add some quotations next time ; )

What? $38K/year in USA for a developer? It seems to me quite low.

Coding on the weekends? ND slow and steady wins the race.

Corrinne Yu is such a babe. I am a total Corrinne fanboy.

      She totally is indeed.

    • Giuseppe Nelva

More importantly, she’s such a great coder.

Let’s keep focused on what’s relevant.

Babe whose great in codding yeahhhh, i want to be codedd by her LOl 😀

        Well said.

  • MTM2

If there’s any developer that can do it, it’s Naughty Dog. It’s spooky how much they manage to pull out of hardware, TLOU on PS3 looks better than most ‘next-gen’ games.

    • BLOB

      100% agree with you.

  • Mr_JtowN

If they can lock it at 60FPS, I might buy this game to see it’s performance and because it’s such an amazing story.

  • Cassive

      • awesome_farts

Gimme 60 fps or give me death!

      • your game experience can dramatically change at 60fps compared to 30fps

    • awesome_farts

      ☝☝^ true story

  • Jordan

unbelievable. The Naughty Gods are still at it.

  • Craig Sloan

July 30th U.K release date, well I’ll just have to buy it again and beat it the 4th time now. Oh and put another few hundred hours into the online MP.

  • Liquid_Smooth_Buttery_30FPS

Wonder what the downgrade trade off will be. Probably more N64 fog and DOF to blur textures like Infamous and Killzone.

Still, The last of us is the Citizen Kane of gaming after all. Both ran at 24FPS when they first came out.

  • They Call Me Senpai

If Naughty Dog says they can do it, then I’m not going to doubt them.

  • Dennis

The Last of Us remastered running at 120fps and gap will only get bigger. Haha!

    • GodGamerDerp

      They never said 120 fps.

    • mike

IT has been said before, but let me just clear it up for you. If a game runs at 60 frames per second without dips…it means it has the capability of running higher and losing frames along the way but never losing enough to drop below 60 fps. That is why they are going past 60: they want to make sure it is a smooth 60fps. There is no point in running a game at 120fps… you give up way too much processing time for a infinitesimal gain in noticeable smoothness.

  • Carl

If Naughty Dog can port a game engine designed for PS3’s SPUs over to PS4 and running at 60 fps with no stuttering, that will be awesome.

  • RealityCheck2013

I am sure it will look & run LOVELY on the PS4 😛 (the PS3 version was perfect)

  • Guiseppe Mario Mazzola

I never got a chance to play this game.My ps3 broke right after i was going to make the buy for ps3.But now that this is going to ps4.IDK maybe i would pick up a ps4.But that’s like a good amount of cash.Like the system is 399.99 then tax then the game is 59.99.Tax would be 65 buck’s.Man thats like maybe just around 500 buck’s.IDK that’s bill’s and student loans from school right there.

  • PrinceHeir

    Stable 60FPS please!!!

  • The tweet about that U4 E3 trailer is worrying, the scene is supposedly taken from one of the game’s chapters, and not made specifically for E3! Anyway, we’ll see when the game launches 🙂

    • Giuseppe Nelva

There isn’t much worrying about it. They had to finish the level in time to put it in the trailer, and the game is about a year away. No surprise that they had to do crunch time.

      • I hope so, and I can imagine when that scene goes a bit further the number and name of the chapter will be shown. A quick mockup here by me lol

    • MTM2

      why is that worrying?

    • Matt Doria

I remember reading that their goal was to surpass what was shown at E3. They never said it was a part of the game, they only stated that it was in-engine. I wouldn’t be surprised if it does find its way into the main game, though.

  • Eden’s Cross

No one’s asking you guys to push past 60fps Naughty Dog, just lock it. Please.

  • RyTeOuS

“Maybe we should keep that in mind when we’re tempted to go out of our way to be nasty with our criticism of their work, which is something that I’m seeing way more than I’d like to, nowadays.”

I agree, and I have seen that especially on the case of The Order 1886, that game looks spectacular, but the criticism over a small percentage of gameplay seen so far is so much unwarranted that I feel for the R@D team.

  • Kamille

this is why I’m starting to regret my job as programmer. I’m not graphic programmer, more around Database/Web/Api on MVC5/C#/Sql/Html/Java/Css. In programming you might have the clearest idea of what you want to make with flowcharts and lots of documentation but there’s always something wrong that takes more time to fix than the entire planning and coding itself and 24 hours in a day are not enough.

And then, programming is this huge vast universe with different languages and styles like lambda expression, low level and stuff that even if you’re a genius you still don’t know most of it, so to work on something like this you need passion. You need to love it and I don’t. I just like working as a team and go out drinking when we finish a job together.

    • Stranger On The Road

genius programmer = a programmer willing to work 80 hours for a 40 hours pay 🙂

    • Jecht_Sin

Switch to system administration. Once you put up the servers they run by themselves, No need for much intervention apart from the routine tasks. Well, on Unix servers system administration. On Windows system administration enjoy the nightmare. lol

  • Axe99

Top last couple of paragraphs there, there’s a sub-group of the gamer population that come across as entitled, self-centred, narrow-minded ungrateful idiots. I guess given that we’ve got that in the broader population, it’s only to be expected, but it’s still sad – it didn’t used to be this bad back in the old days.

    • mamoru

Sure they were. You just didn’t have internet forums for people to vent on. People have always been dicks, the good old days is an illusion.

      • Axe99

There were still idiots, of course, but gaming was less mainstream then, and people were generally more appreciative of the work of devs, with the gaming community holding a smaller proportion of idiots than it does now. Might have also helped that most devs were individuals or small groups of people, so easier to relate to.

  • bob

They should really put framerates on the back of the boxes this gen.

  • Aria68

Im assuming that the overtime work from her side, didn’t exactly come for free.

  • miyamoto

his is Naughty Dog in the eyes of Hiroshi Yamauchi of Nintendo:

“Yamauchi realized the importance of the software that ran on the game systems and made sure the system was easy to program. Yamauchi believed that technicians did not create excellent games, but artists did.”

  • ipot_04

a stable 60fps would be good that’s why their going past 60fps.

  • Jecht_Sin

“Long working hours often driven mostly by passion should definitely command a lot more respect than they do in certain internet-anonimity-driven environments.”

I totally agree with this. One thing though.. If the average working time is 60hours/week, the studios should hire 50% more people. In EU it is even mandatory, there are laws against too much overtime. Which must be an exception and not the rule anyway. It would be interesting to know what’s the situation in the Scottish Rockstar North.

  • name_00

Does this mean it could work with Project Morpheus? I was thinking maybe that’s why they would work so hard to get above 60 fps. I don’t know how high they are targeting though.

    • ISISSecretAgent

they work hard to get it above 60fps so they can lock the game at 60fps. thats how locking framerates works, it needs to average 60FPS across the board in any situation

  • PachterStation

Still don’t see see how it can justify a £50 price tag.

    • MTM2

What if you’re new to Playstation and never bought it first time around?

You seems to be thinking this game is only being sold to existing TLOU-buyers…

Well done for upvoting your own comment and hiding your comment history though, smooth.

      • JustGaming

This flagrant self-upvoting needs to stop.

      • PachterStation

Still doesn’t justify a £50 price tag, whether you’ve played it on the PS3 or not. Would you pay £50 for it? Why not £30? Why not £20? Surely, games like this should be knocked out at a realistic price. But that’s never going to happen because there’s enough people out there who’re are willing to pay top whack.

    • superkarma

So don’t buy it? After all, no one is forcing you to.

      • PachterStation

I’ll be buying it, but not at £50.

        • Paradox

          Wow dude.. Troll much?

    • Jecht_Sin

Pachter sees far too many things wrong anyhow.. ^_^

      • PachterStation

Far too many things are wrong in gaming. Wrongs need to be turned into rights.

    • ImonadrugcalledCharlieSheen

But we can all see why you’re such an idiot.

  • DarthDiggler

Too often we forget that the gaming industry is a quite demanding

I think you meant to say too often gamers have little to no consideration to how much work goes into games.

    • Zack Wooten

I show my appreciation every time I give them $60 for a game. So calm down with your high and mightyness. The lady has a job that she gets paid to do. For $60, I expect the level of game they put out or better.
