PS4 Exclusive Bloodborne Will Let You Play a Female; Customization Similar to Demon’s Souls

With all the hubbub about the inclusion (or lack of thereof) of female characters in video games, looks like we won’t have to worry about that in the upcoming PS4 exclusive Bloodborne, as mentioned by Game Director Hidetaka Miyazaki in an interview on Dengeki Online:

You can also select a female character as the heroine, and there’s facial customization. Personally, I think not only with RPGs, but even with Tactical RPGs, character customization is one of the most fun aspects.

Miyazaki-san also explained that facial customization will be similar to what we saw in Demon’s Souls. Some additional elements are being considered, but he isn’t ready to talk about those yet.

So there you have it, straight from the lion’s mouth: if you want to play a fearsome dark lady in Bloodborne, you’ll be able to. And considering that customization in Demon’s Souls was pretty detailed, you’ll probably be able to make her look very close to whatever you like.

Don’t know why but I always like being a girl in video games.

    • Howaboutno

Same. I’m not trasngendered or anything but I’ve always gravitated towards female gender options when I’ve been given the option.

If anything, it just makes a change

How is it that Ubisoft has a 9000+ army of programmers but can’t do female models?

    • Stranger On The Road

the way I understand it, it has nothing to do with the programmers (developer*) but with the writers. The story was written to require a male protagonist, it would have had to be heavily modified to allow a female protagonist as well.

      * programmers (AKA code monkeys) are different from developer who do more than write code.

      • Sticky Notes

That makes no sense for multiplayer. Same with FC4. The team said they were going to let you play as a female contractor for coop but had to cancel because it was “too hard.”

        • Stranger On The Road

From what I understand of the game’s mechanism -as they were explained in an interview with Eurogamer- you play your single player game. But there are elements of the game that might require multiple characters. For those you use the same protagonist from the single player game to play the multiplayer game.

So it is not really a multiplayer game, but a game where different player can use the very same protagonist (customisable, but the same) to help each other out. After which they can continue their single player game.

Edit: the above is based on my understanding of AC Unity.

  • Stranger On The Road

Well good to know, I’m of the opinion that unless the story or gameworld require it then the player should be able to change the gender of the protagonist. The story and dialogue can be written in a way that ‘she’ or ‘he’ won’t be used anywhere*.

But there are other stories where the gender is required, such as Heavy Rain’s character Ethan who was the ‘father’ of the kidnapped child. So unless the gender is required to be fixed, the game should allow the player to change the gender of the protagonist.

    * admittedly, this could lead to some strange dialogue 🙂

    • Orichalon Hades

there are instances where the gender you choose change the way the other npc call your character you know. ME and DA comes to mind.

Yay…i wanna play a GTA game where instead of playing a guy frakkin ladies, i wanna play a lady frakkin guys! C’mon rockstar give me that game! /SARCASM

      • Stranger On The Road

if that is what you are into then contact the developer. If they won’t make it then I’m sure an indie developer would fill the gap for you.

      • Howaboutno

… I don’t understand why the sarcasm is needed?

  • The Oathbreaker

This should make the cry babies happy to read which were moaning over no females in Unity.

    • Virdin Barzey

Isn’t the lead producer of AC Unity a female named Jade Raymond? These people complaining about Ubisoft are beyond cry babies. Get a grip people.

  • Mr_JtowN

This is going to be a pretty interesting game to play.

  • Luís Teixeira

My expectations for the game are now gone. Customization? Really? =/

    • Neco The Sergal

Heaven forbid an RPG that has character customization….. /s

Really? =/ I don’t hear any whiners over Skyrim having character customization, or Demon’s Souls, or Dark Souls 1 or 2…. no offense, your expectations must be shat to be so flawed and nonsensical.
