Shuhei Yoshida: Only Four Out of Ten PlayStation Games Make Money, but Sony Will Always Support Talent

by on July 4, 2014 4:49 PM 154

Sony Computer Entertainment has been known to publish quite a few games that haven’t exactly been financial breakthroughs, yet they don’t seem to be about to give up on that kind of experience, as explained by Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida during his panel at Gamelab in Barcelona a few days ago.

When you look at what we do, managing studios and managing funds, that’s essentially what we do: to look for talent and support talent, because at the end of the day it’s the people that create amazing things, and it’s the creative team that makes breakthroughs.

It’s a hit-driven business. We look at our financial results of the titles, and probably three or four out of ten make money, and maybe one or two make all the money to cover the cost of the others titles. So we have to be able to maintain that hit ratio at a certain level to be able to continue in the business, so we always try to find out and support and help grow the talent. That’s the most important work that I believe myself and some of my management team at worldwide studios are doing.

There are lots of opportunities. There are so many projects that we want to do, and especially there are so many different techs, platforms and or devices that we can release games, but we have finite resources and budget, we have to make selection choices.

One of the things we always come back to when we’re looking at five potential projects is that we choose the team we believe in when we start working with a new team. That’s really really important.

Personally, I’m quite happy to see that Sony is willing keep supporting talented developers whether their games are financial hits or not, especially considering that titles that may not seem like enormous moneymakers at first sight can actually turn out to be runaway hits.

If I was a shareholder, maybe I’d have a different opinion on this. Thank Goodness I’m not.

    Well said Shu!

It’s too bad that this article will soon be overflown with fanboy nonsense.

If Destiny2021, Sexy Mcgee or any other known trolls show up, just ignore it guys. They’ll get bored and move on if you don’t give them an audience.

  • Wargreymon559 .

That’s why I will always Support Sony. They take risks unlike 2 other certain companies. That play it safe.

    #PS4LIFE

    • theodor70941

Sony and Nintendo takes risks, M$ is the company that doesn’t take any risks.

      • Wargreymon559 .

        It’s Rare for Ninty.

      • Redinferno124

Kinect was a gamble that didn’t pay off like they expected so I wouldn’t say that.

        • Sucka Free

Maybe, but they don’t take any chances with the games. It’s pretty much just MP shooters with the occasional racer thrown in

          • Jeff Maxwell

that’s why Kinect is not useful for games well, you’ve seen gamer with the room hes hand gesturing away opening closing content, its getting there and something like Kinect is the start of that techonology BUT at the it is not useful for gaming its more useful for other applications atm but that not to say when screens get cheaper and cheaper like 65-100inch screens mass consumer level like £1000 this tech may be better cus 4k -8k sceens your getting mouses with 1200dpi just to traverse a 4K screen youll have to have 2400-4000 to traverse an 8K at the same speed so the camera tech needs to follow. so future is there it depends on who gets it right markets it right and expands on it right… and MS always screw up there on the ball they just cant market to save there lives. its a shame there awesome just always behind

          • Shawn

maybe thats why one is in finacial trouble and the others aint?

          • Sucka Free

No, that is actually Sony’s saving grace. It is the primay reason that the brand outperforms it’s competitors, even the ones that enjoy massive profits from other products. I know you want to think that the Playstation is one of the reasons that Sony is struggling, just the opposite

        • Jeff Maxwell

what MS didn’t realise with Kinect the uses for it are FAR FAR more reaching than games, its bin used for cheap medical monitors saving £1000’s through hacked software then MS started giving them proper SDK’s it is AMAZING hardware, its just WASTED on gaming. there so stupid I dunno how they missed it I personally think the Kinect bundle game from a business guy he saw 360 sales, and Kinect sales and put 2+2 together and came out with 10. it was a pathetic move driven by a business guy and that sit

          • Redinferno124

Now that you put it that way, what were they thinking?

          • Jeff Maxwell

its business ppl al the time, its something they don’t know, I read an article on FF15, this puts it into perspective, they were years into development the guy making it had multiple meetings trying to save it and the business guys were saying it would look better on the smartphone!!! and he was fighting for it and realised devs were starting to make microtransaction for building into the mobile game then on one of the last meeting they were gonna build another game so he said hed make any costumes or whatever for purchasing through microstransactions of the mobile game anything they wanted as long a they kept FF15 alive for the consoles and that and that’s why its still coming. Whether its true or not I dunno but I can imagine Japanaese ppl are passionate ppl and will go for it withoutj any compromise… hmm makes me thing why they allowed infamous drive club order etc to allow for more time cus they wont compromise on quality… maybe I will keep my PS4 and see what happens, I can afford just about but id like to see what happens. but yah that’s what happened to FF15 apparently

          • Redinferno124
          • Jeff Maxwell

it was a story like that yeah, its business ppl thinking of margins, no expensive gfx no ai no physics really charge $10 for it + dlc for higher earner… but that then detsorys the FF brand FF16 no one will buy

          • Redinferno124

Yep, It’s BS, but it’s all business in the end.

No doubt that Sony and MS are no different, but there are signs of change, at least as far as the PS and Xbox brands are concerned. Phil and Shu are no doubt just PR guys with fancy titles, but at least they’ve been more open lately.

          • Jeff Maxwell

well sony has alwys bin a gamer brand cus they’ve bin in it longer, MS not so much but with Phils leadershpif he really is an avid gamer that’s good cus you wouldn’t ask a gamer to run a corporation, and you wouldn’t ask a business guy to run something he hasn’t got a clue about

          • Redinferno124

Very true, although Tretton did a pretty good job despite making it pretty clear he was a business guy.

To be honest, I don’t think the blame lies solely on Mattrick’s shoulders even if MS have sort of spun it that way, but I think he came off as an example of how bad things can get when you aren’t crystal clear what the hell your device does day one. It wasn’t so much that their original goal was terrible, it was more that their reasoning and execution didn’t make any sense.

          • Redinferno124

You can get an Xbox One too you know. You don’t have to get a PS4. This game is multiplatform anyway.

          • Michael Norris

Kinect does not belong in gaming. As a device that can save lives I am all for it.

        • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Abgreed. In fact Kinect is as useful as the Sega 32x. Both have very few good games. The only difference is that Sega 32x only had one really awesome game “Knuckles Chaotix”. Regardless though I could care less about the Kinect.

        • Prime157

Kinect was a pushed gaming peripheral that had other GREAT uses. However, those GREAT uses became hacked and violated because of MICROSOFT’S view of control (or better known as DRM with games). Yes, lack of DRM would have helped the Kinect, especially in indie music [videos].

      • Jeff Maxwell

lets see how much money MS funnels into R+D that either does or doesn’t make it to light. They funnel far more money into innovative new things than anyone some of it is to advanced for the time but they are really innovative and will create the tech of the future, the main problem with them is there horrible at marketing it. They should be on dragons den, there the entrepreneur and need a dragon to make it into a business

        • theodor70941

How do yo know that other companies don’t put more money on R&D? Companies never release numbers on how much they invest behind closed doors. Btw I never said a thing about how much any company invests behind the scenes, but what I did say was that the products that they do release aren’t that big risks takers. Plus they use Windows in Xbox… Meaning that all Windows viruses will work and might damage the Xbox if you connect it to the internet…

          • Jeff Maxwell

smart phones, apple make there own CPU well licenses the ARM instruction sets etc which is pretty impressive but its kinda like a console where they have complete control add in a GPU cus they cant build there own and they got there base computing experience , they’ve stuck with 1156×640 display for so long its ridiculous. you know the retina display was good at the time but it only applies if the PPI = 300 or more and most display now and way above that so its not good. there constantly playing catchup and it pathetuic, next phone im getting is a alumia 930, wifia/b/g/n/ac gloanass the Russian stuff 2GB ram snapdragon 800 m 1080p display 2420 amp battery and everuyting else its going to be awesome…. what iPhone got, first time maybe a bigger display size AND resolution memeory, a bit faster cpu/gpu and that it pretty uncomplleiong tbh

          • theodor70941

And that has anything to do whit the conversation because?

        • Redinferno124

That’s funny that you mention how horrible they are at marketing that stuff. Could have sworn Sony had a similar problem last gen.

          • Jeff Maxwell

MS are rubbish, they’ve bought nokias phone division, they’ve solidified surface as the tablets now they want rename both to bring it under 1 roof… 4ucks sake just leave it alone you don’t need it surface for tablets is good, you don’t nokia by MS as a 4ucking phone leave it as nokia or surface phone….. see what what I mean good ideas when ya drunk but turn to rubbish. why buil;d years of a brand to nuke it its rediculous

          • Redinferno124

Yeah I’ll be honest, I thought the surface was cool, but purchasing Nokia was a bit of an eyebrow raiser, and not in a good way.

          • Jeff Maxwell

the nokia Lumia 2520 RT tablet was really good it had everything, style functionality screen specs. think its just the MS stigma ppl cant buy into

          • Redinferno124

I think it was a bit of stigma on Nokia’s part too. Their current prez at the time didn’t exactly do them any favors when he took over if I recall.

          • Jeff Maxwell

elop hmm he was a bit dodgy BUT he did lead nokia in the right direction… into MS pocket lol nah im joking but there a phone this month that ive bin waiting for the Lumia 930 ill link

            http://www.nokia.com/global/products/phone/lumia930/specifications/

its got pretty much everything could have a bigger battery but I think should be ok

          • Redinferno124

            This month you say?

          • Jeff Maxwell

yeah apparantley its coming into UK this month, im on O2 apparently it has only black and green models for o2 BUT the back plate is interchangeable I think so should be able to put white or orange on if ya want. ill show you a pre order ithink

            https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/prepaysims/nokia/lumia-930-black/

tariffs to be decided yet apparently but theres lots of other phone companies selling it with multiple colour options even though colour options atm are black, white, green, orange

          • Redinferno124

Interesting, will keep an eye out.

          • Jeff Maxwell

the iPhone 6, laughable, its going have to pull out something special to meet an s6 cus that should be moving to 1440p, but the biggest change is iPhone 6…. if that moves to a dodgy sub 1080p display like 1860x 920 or someat the ENTIRE OS has to change or itll look rubbish cus do you realise why iPhone GPU outperform galaxy GPU;s? Galaxy GPU are running 1920×1080… iPhone is running 1156×640… of course it going to destroy and I be you they’ll put it undr true 1080p to try get the performance advantage. there amazing magician at marketing that’s it

          • Redinferno124

Yeah, listen I need to run. Nice chatting :)

          • Jeff Maxwell

yah ok remember Lumia 930 for life :D

      • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Nintendo also owns Monolithsoft a company once owned by Namco. Monolithsoft created the Xenosaga Trilogy for PS2 one of the best PS2 RPG series, then again the same creator Tetsuya Takahashi also made “Xenogears” for the PS1 back when he worked at SQUARESoft. Yeah Squaresoft I mentioned it. Remember that badass company well guess what Nintendo owns Monolithsoft which houses former Squaresoft employees.

If you haven’t played Xenogears you’re really missing out, and if you haven’t played the Xenosaga Trilogy you’re missing out on some awesome RPG’s.
As for Sony I’ll support them and Nintendo the most specifically cause I like them both a lot.

      • NeoTechni

Nintendo takes no risks, hence why they slap the Mario name on a thousand games

      • HelghastUser

Frankly, If last gen is taken notice MS doesn’t need to take huge risks to profit on their exclusives. Unlike PS, Xbox owners actually supported their few exclusives…

        • phar0ahad3

Thats not the truth microsoft just appealed to the perfect fanbase people who werent even gamers so they had no expectations and wre fine with tons of sequels but this generation its not working and microsoft really needed to wow people and they couldnt so thats why the playstation is doing so good

      • phar0ahad3

i didnt know putting out mario every year was a risk lmao

        • theodor70941

Hmm……………….. Only Mario, stop being a hater. Fire Emblem, Zelda, Xenoblade, Art Academy, Art Academy: SketchPad, Bayonetta 2, Devil’s Third, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Dr. Luigi, Game & Wario, Hyrule Warriors, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse…

          • phar0ahad3

Exactly established franchises meaning there taking 0 risks sony makes new blockbuster franchises every gen with the ps1 it was crash ,spyro and final fantasy . with the ps2 it was kingdom hearts, jak and daxter and ratchet and clank and gta and god of war, with the ps3 it was uncharted ,tlou ,killzone, infamous, little big planet, resistance and now this gen well all have to wait and see but for now i can say bloodbourne will be huge for me atleast and the order 1886 will become one and i think sony will really suprise us all this gen

          • theodor70941

Why are you defending Sony? I did say that both Sony and Nintendo takes risks. Also, a LOT of those games are not established franchises.

          • phar0ahad3

are you even reading what im typing ? every game you named is a sequel meaning people know about them if i have and ice cream shop and keep selling vanilla ,chocolate and strawberry i am not taking any risks but sony doesnt have any of those every generation they change the flavors do you understand now ?

          • theodor70941

Are you stupid or something? Devil’s Third, Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem are NOT sequels, do some research before you say something… You’re just embarrassing yourself.

          • phar0ahad3

There are other fire emblem games and Hyrule warriors is just a mix of dynasty warriors and zelda its probably one of the blandest ideas to date and devils third is literally laughable not only is it not innovative at all it looks like a game that was just rushed into production because people were saying the wiiu is too kiddy do you understand why none of these are innovating anything right ?

    • They Call Me Senpai

Microsoft takes risks and while it’s rare, so does Nintendo.

      • MisterHoot

        >Rare
        Pls don’t remind me ;_;

      • MisterHoot

Jokes aside, i was happy to see that even microsoft dipped it’s toe in the risk pond this e3. A lot of unexpected stuff from them at the start of this gen. I think in the long run, having more unique IPs all around is positive for everyone, because devs get motivated in stimulating competitive envrionments to also make new stuff

        • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Microsoft should do everyone a favor and sell Rare to Nintendo.

          • BlackestNight63

RARE still isn’t what it used to be, but Nintendo would do much more good with those IPs than MS has.

          • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Yeah especially how they easily pissed off a lot of Conker fans.

          • MisterHoot

Even if they sold Rare, it wouldn’t make much of a difference. A lot of people who made Rare good back in the day have stopped working there a long time ago. The “Rare” we know today is just similar in name to the Rare of the N64 era.

If anything, Microsoft should sell the Rare IPs to nintendo, but we know they’ll never ever do that

        • They Call Me Senpai

Yeah, I have a feeling that we’re gonna see a lot more imaginative IP this gen.

    • Failz

There wont be any support if they cant support themselves. One reason Nintendo sold Rare was due to there profits. Rare spends so much on making games and there some of the greatest games we will ever play but when they only release 1 game every 2 years and don’t sell that great made them sell them. Shenmue was an amazing game with so much money put into it yet sent Sega broke. TLOU might be in the same boat. Sony needs to manage there bank better rather then keep giving. Sounds good now but where Nintendo and MS are thinking the long term.

    • Virdin Barzey

That’s why I will always Support the Game Industry and not any one company. These companies will tell you anything that only the foolish and gullible will eat it up. One moment they say one thing only to say the opposite the next time. They love the short memory of a lot of dopey gamers.

Competition only is what keeps them honest and give us the best products. Its the way business works though many on these threads are very ignorant to that simple fact. Without it these companies are not concerned about you the gamer and have already proved it ten times over.

    • TraceSkipper

I buy Sony exclusives first … always. But I also buy multiplatform games as well which also includes indies. So far
      Knack
Killzone Shadow Fall (season pass edition)
      Second Son

      Also
      Wolfenstein
      Thief
      Guacamelee
      Striker (playstation plus)
      Blue Estate
      Trine 2 (playstation plus)
      Dead Nation Apocalypse Edition
      Fez
      PizelJunk Shooter Ultimate (playstation plus)
      Entwined

      Preordered
      Sniper Elite III
      The Last of Us
      Alien Isolation

And i plan on buying another 10 titles at least this year.

    • PachterStation

Keep taking the tablets, matey. Most of Sony’s games fall well short of quality.

  • Markus M

It’s sad people can’t stop complaining.

    • Redinferno124

It’s in our nature unfortunately. Gaming is a hobby isn’t cheep and
often forces us to choose one thing and forgo another. If everyone could
afford more than one platform at a time, no one would be arguing like
      this.

It all stems from not being able to play one game cause you have a different system.

      For
example, I would like to play Sunset Overdrive, but cannot because it’s
only for X1 and I own a PS4, but the opposite is true also where say
someone wants to play Uncharted 4, but can’t because they own an X1 not a
PS4. It’s not always about not liking a game so that’s the reason you
bash it, too often it’s because they don’t have to means to play it at
that time. Same for games only on Wii U, you either have it or you do
      without.

      • Jeff Maxwell

it is true especially if you can afford 2 consoels, can you afford 2 console exclusives if they came out at the same time, youd be spending loads of money

  • Nicholas

Good to know, glad they take risks with some of these games

  • Negi Springfield

This is why I like SONY , They take risks and give us games that`s creative , fresh and innovating.. Games like Teraway , Journey , Little Big Planet and several others… I also like their approach with Indies , They made me discover and play , Games like Transistor , Which I`ve said many times is a great game.

  • Jeff Maxwell

4/10 make money while the others may not… well we already know one game chewed up $100million for 3 attempts and got canned, you cant be complacent about that type of loss, sure others may make up money over time but they got be careful what they invest in, more of those investments and its going to be detrimental to the sony publishing model and could be a killer blow. Part of me thinks all the remakes/enhancements are for that reason to help to recover previous losses at minimal expense, sure it can be good TLOU obviously I never played but ppl willing to see better res gfx will pay same as Tomb Raider I cant believe that cus in that game lara looked amazing but the rest looked like trash. its pointless remake purely driven to make money. I played on PC with TressFX 1 (consoles used TressFX 2 much improved and solved a lot of the problems from tress fx 1 which is why it ran better) but while lara looked amazing, the rest looked far to static in comparison. Console ppl call PC guys gfx whores, most couldn’t wait to climb onto the PS4 upgraded edition haha makes me laugh

    • Redinferno124

While I agree with you on somethings, it’s wrong to treat people like second class garbage just because they don’t own a PC. Dynasty2021 does this so often that it paints PC gamers in a bad light.

In the end though, this is Playstation and I’m sure it will be around as long as there’s an Xbox brand and Nintendo brand. Whether people want Sony itself to go bankrupt is irrelevant.

      • Jeff Maxwell

im not treating them like garbage its just funny how whenever a PC guy get involved in an argument about gfx its oh go away go away, yet sony owners bash ANYTHING on the x1, if games were just fun to play there fun to play fortunately like a lot of ppl say the fanboys on either side really are a massive minority, I don’t even think 1% of the player base really cares. its mainly about what there friends are playing what there getting etc that’s where the drive is not about gfx cus they don’t care that much. think im going to keep the ps4 I bought and get infamous and KZ tomorrow

BTW just bought Metro 2033 Redux CD key for £16.99 nearly 50% reduction over X1,PS4+ PC disc price… as the mcdonalds saying goes… im loving it :D

        • Redinferno124

Not you personally, I actually understand the points you try to make, I’m talking about those who constantly put down people like myself who want nothing to do with this crap, yet get dragged into it and I admit that I get carried away sometimes. I love my PS3 and PS4 and while I wish I had more to play right now, so does everyone else, Xbox included.

Started playing dragon’s dogma dark arisen for the first time cause I was bored.

Also it’s not all PS fans bashing Xbox, those are fanboys in general.

          • Jeff Maxwell

I havnt owned a console in 20 years but bashed the ps4 a lot tbh, dunno why I got involved in this console war ive never bothered before it might have something to do with me wanting to irritate my mate at work that loves playstations lol so yah but thinking of having a go of infamous…. are the controls hard like thumbtsticks compared to a mouse for targeting?

          • Redinferno124

I’m not sure what you mean? It plays like a third person action game. I’ve never used a mouse for a game yet so I’m the wrong guy to ask.

As far as visuals are concerned, If a game has a good solid foundation with its art style, that means more to me than how many wrinkles a mans face has.

Witcher 3 may not look as good as the PC version, but that’s not why I wanted it. I want it because it looks like a dark story in a large world.

          • Jeff Maxwell

well mouse is far better cus you track your hand properly like in fighting you can punch where your looking at but trying control what your looking at with only your thumb is unnatural and takes time to learn

    • Jecht_Sin

The remasters (different from remakes) are there simply because there is a market for them and they are highly profitable. Some remasters also have an high demand.

The reason can be many. Some people never bought the original game, maybe because they didn’t own the console it was running on. Some sold the old console so to play it again they must buy the port. Others again don’t mind to pay again and just want to build up their new gen library. And as ridiculous as it may seem, some buy them because they get a brand new trophy set to fill. There are people who bought all 3 versions of Demon’s Souls only for that reason.

In any case it isn’t only about graphics. According to vgchartz Tomb Raider: DE didn’t reach 1/2 million copies on PS4 (still twice the PC retail sales, though). FF X/X-2 HD sold about a million and KH HD 1.5 Remix even more than that, 1.2 million.

      • Jeff Maxwell

ah ive bin kinda looking for you. You know that PS4 I bought I think I might end up keeping it the more its there the more I want to open so thinking of getting infamous + KZ tomorrow for like £40 and play on it. but to the other thing remasters are always good for high profile anything… I think any game dwarfs in comparison to Star Wars remastered but there is demand for it…. never know I might try TLOU remastered when I can get it for cheap but its defineatly not a day 1 bnio where near

        • Redinferno124

Yeah as I said, TLOU remaster makes sense seeing as there are a lot of PS4 owners who still haven’t played the game. Too many, it is an old game, but at the same time, it’s also a new game for a lot of people.

          • Jecht_Sin

Yup, that indeed. I wouldn’t be surprised to see GTA5 selling at least 4 million all together the first week, though!

          • Jeff Maxwell

should i open that QC sticker?

          • Jeff Maxwell

comwon would like to know there is enough games to play omn th Playstion fail in its first year to make em say yes I will play ya? so what is it?

          • Jecht_Sin

Sorry. You’re starting to make no sense again. My automatic drunk translator is broken, End of the discussion with you for tonight!!

          • Jeff Maxwell

well got the ps4 working… you cant get much digitally can ya its a bit rubbish but trying d/l war thunder, I signedup for 3 months of psn haha I am now a peasant :(

          • Jecht_Sin

It isn’t worth to buy digital for console. Unless you make an US PSN ID using a fake address from some tax free State (just look up for an hotel in Montana or Oregon). you add the same (or another) US address in Amazon and buy the PSN cards from Amazon US. Then use the codes in the US PSN Store. It’s harder to write it down than to do it.

I mean, the pound is now £1 for $1.716. A $60 game will cost you £35.

          • Jeff Maxwell

oh wish id of read this first haha. cant you buy ps4 game code from US and use it on the eurpean store?

        • Jecht_Sin

What? DId you buy the PS4?! If so The Last of Us is a must buy for you, then. Not because of the graphics, because it’s universally recognized as a great game. And the Full HD graphics sure doesn’t hurt. Then if it will bore you, sorry. I don’t know what to say. :p

          • Jeff Maxwell

yeah that’s what I was saying its sitting to the left right now winking at me.. not cus I want to play just cus its something new lol still got the manufacturer sticker of QC on it so I know its sealed. feel ike I can go buy infamous a KZ at a used game ship tomorrow for £40 I can afford it ithink. hmmm its so hard of a decision

          • Jecht_Sin

So you have got a new toy and you’re wasting your time in here? Just open it up and download the F2P games! Get used to the UI. Set up your PSN ID and subscribe to PS+ so you start getting free games. What the heck, man?

  • Alexander

They should really change the price of mediocre or lower rated games like Murdered SS to something other then 60€ on digital so that they would get more sales just look how that game did it was below-average and at the same price as games like wolfenstein so it didn’t sell at all!

    • Redinferno124

Yeah this is my only problem with the current system, although if they did do as you say, then it would be already obvious that the game isn’t all its cracked up to be, and people wouldn’t buy it anyway.

      • Alexander

I think that in this day and age people look up reviews and things like that before purchasing so they already know the game is bad and if you lower the price then people will be like; “this game is pretty bad but it’s only 30€ or whatever” and then there’s a bigger chance they will purchase it

    • Giuseppe Nelva

Gotta keep in mind that Murdered SS’s pricing isn’t decided by Sony. It’s set independently by its publisher, which in this case is Square Enix.

      • Jeff Maxwell

do ya reckon that was the killer blow and why airtight games has closed cus the publisher was expecting to much?

        • Giuseppe Nelva

No idea really. I try not to speculate on why studios close. It’s sad enough as it is.

          • Jeff Maxwell

right have you noticed the trend… games and especially AAA games go up in price studios close if they don’t do so well… same as rising food costs, business expenses, it hits the small studios the hardest, small businesses losing out by mass buying by supermarkets, butchers and farms are getting SQUEEZED for there margins… its ridiculous.. personally CoD advanced warfare seems really good at first glance its way apart from previous cod games but I think its the next gen of the same game all the time, obviously I cant say for sure cus I cant look forward in time but releases of solid performing games seem to be the best bets and risks will be getting few and far between :(

          • Redinferno124

^Exactly! That’s why as much as people seem to be sick of indi devs, we need new ideas otherwise there won’t be anymore AAA games. Publishers like EA and Ubisoft need to focus more on maintaining a consistent budget and focusing on quality more than just trying to have a hit every year.

I would add SE too, but I’m sick of rehashing that.

          • Jeff Maxwell

EA that’s laughable, the only thing they care about is $$$, same as ubisoft but they are more subtle about it… its a downward spiral. ill buy CDProjeckts game at full price cus there pushing the boundaries of PC gfx… not just cus of that but cus they aren’t scared of alienating the console crowd by a weaker experience, if publishers see that buyers aren’t put off maybe they’ll actuall pus the PC further until then there scared of lsing sales and money like everyother studio/publisher

          • Redinferno124

I don’t see them making any compromises with Witcher 3 beyond the usual effects and such. Will look impressive regardless. Buy it for what you got. My cousin just got an awesome PC he and can play almost anything at max and yet he wanted a PS4 for Batman. I just told him to stick with what he has now, he’s already set. Told him to buy a PS4 later next year if he wants.

          • Jeff Maxwell

no they wont they’ve already stipulated MS + sony havnt got enough money to ask for exclusive content lol. they own I think is GOG.com which is DRM free games so they are massively PC pro. ive got a 280x atm but apparently a 780ti at max details at 1080p and 8x MSAA runs about 40 fps atm, that’s crazy that FAR more powerful than what ive got. Witcher 3 releases in February so hopefully I want at least an Nvidia GPU equivalent to 3300 kepler cuda cores (or 2200 Maxwell cuda cores) or an AMD equalling 3500 SP’s then that’s gravy and why ive said the old gpu’s are last gen these new ones are next gen GPU’s if you call it that and will destroy hah :D

          • Redinferno124

I think I get where you were going, but all that just flew over my head.

          • Jeff Maxwell

            can you wtch this

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAgMBbtgqnk

its in engine and is what thre final product should look like with jumping and stuff,… the models are pretty much already there

          • Redinferno124

I don’t really care for exclusive content, but I do respect them for sticking to their guns.

Also, I was talking about how Witcher 3 will be the same game on both PC and PS4. I’m quite aware that the PC version will look way better.

I just really don’t care all that much, I just want the game.

        • Redinferno124

The game didn’t perform as expected and was probably a contributing factor in why they closed, simple as that.

      • Russell Gorall

Sounds like the PS Now argument, Sony and pubs have crazy pricing and it is just the publisher’s fault.

    • Jecht_Sin

I wish it was 60€. Digital it is 69.99€ for PS4. 49.99€ for PS3. That crap needs to stop.

  • Cassive

This is why I have a PS4, I feel like Nintendo are on the same wave too, Sony and Nintendo do their thing, Microsoft play it too safe and it isn’t working

  • They Call Me Senpai

Good to know that Sony makes talent a priority, most other publishers don’t do that.

  • MisterHoot

At least something not so silly that came out of Yoshida’s mouth this week, and reminds me why I liked him in the first place

  • Jewy McJew

Here is hoping that a digital future will bring more money to the developers / publishers! G-d knows the convenience has led me to buy all sorts of stuff I never would have if I had to get me ass to a mall.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

As gamers we all have a king and his name is gaming may he Forever Reign
    -Kevin Butler

  • ManagedCorn

They’re a big company, they can take the risks but this approach is not convincing to people who invest and expect profit from their investment.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

I think Sony should acquire From Software, but that’s just me.

    • EdwardJamesKenwayACIV

And have Dark Souls III exclusive to PS4? :D

      • Jeff Maxwell

can imagine the explosion now… Nagasaki got nothing on that :D

        • EdwardJamesKenwayACIV

          whose Nagasaki?

          • Jecht_Sin

            You’re kidding, right?

          • EdwardJamesKenwayACIV

idk who that is :P i;ve only started playing it :P

          • Jecht_Sin

Trust me, you don’t want to play that Nagasaki thing (not sure if I should laugh about this one).

Maybe Hiroshima gives you a hint?

          • EdwardJamesKenwayACIV

ah, the americans bombing japan. I thought you were saying, we meet a person in Dark Souls named Nagasaki :P

          • Jecht_Sin

Yup, that one. But it wasn’t me anyway, it was Jeff. :p

          • Jeff Maxwell

whose Nagasaki lmao no offense but so dumb, first nuke dropped there cus of weather conditions diverting from Hiroshima, theyd made sure they got it right the next time

          • Jecht_Sin

Not sure if I understood you correctly. But the Hiroshima bombing came first! :p

    • Jecht_Sin

Oh, trust me. It isn’t just you!! ^_^

Too late, though. It has been sold already.

  • EdwardJamesKenwayACIV

Anyone know how to kill that Hydra in the forest?

    • Jecht_Sin

Not sure anymore. High magic defense and fire weapons to attack? Just remember to not get too close, because you will fall down. AND DIE! :D

  • Craig Sloan

I’ll say it’s both good and bad. It’s good that they will support their studios, It’s good that we will see the games we love even if others don’t buy them in millions and it’s good for having a different variety of games instead of just the same genres that sell. It can bring fresh ideas and creativity and quality if no one feels rushed or pressured into having to make hit after hit or you’re gone. I’ll say it’s bad for Sony financially, it’s bad if one of their studios feel they can either become complacent knowing they won’t be let go or just make rehash games because it’s a known game series ( not mentioning games but it’s a FPS from Sony )

If there are really only 4/10 of their games that make them money that’s concerning.

    • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Regardless though PS4 has become the PS2 of this generation.

      • EdwardJamesKenwayACIV

Has it? then where is Jak IV?

        • Антон Иванов

Naughty Dog would be very stupid to waste such talented team on Jack or Crash. They are at the point of making the games that people will look back at in years to come and will take their place in gamers’ hearts just like Uncharted and The Last of Us

      • Craig Sloan

The hardware is doing phenomenal but it’s the software that makes you the most money over the generation. I hope people support Sony’s first party games. I’d take a good guess at which studios that Sony owns that make them the money.

    • They Call Me Senpai

Nothing wrong with Sony’s FPS’, they have a very dedicated and large following.

      • Craig Sloan

I guess it’s all relative, I wouldn’t personally say that about that certain game myself. I hope they do well all of their studios though even if they are not games I’d buy.

      • Russell Gorall

First party has traditionally done about ten percent of Sony’s sales.

        Uncharted 3 – 6 million sales

Last of Us – 4 million sales

God of War 3 – 4 million sales

While the studios have a dedicated following, I wouldn’t call that large.

  • Dennis Crosby

I’m sorry to say but you guys are pathetic. How does a article about Sony turns into BS in the comment section. Its sad to be honest but on to the article the main reason for the money lost on the games being made they cost to much. Alot of people can’t afford to buy $60 games that way the go to the games top, WalMart, pawnshops and buying used games instead of new were they actually make money. Prices of games have to go down to compete with used games physical and digital. $30-45 for a new game great price

    • They Call Me Senpai

Game sales are doing very well even with a $60 price tag and they’ll never be able to compete with used game sales even if the prices dropped. And 30-45 dollars for a new game? I think it’s time you came back to reality.

If you’re going to go and call others pathetic, you might want to actually want to know what you’re talking about before demonstrating that you’re the pathetic one.

      • Dennis Crosby

I am in reality why do you thinl 90% of Developers doors are closing. Its not because they are making crap games hell alot of studios are still open and they are making shit games. Its because no one is buying there games. Especially when they pull the winter rush like what’s coming up in October.. How many of those studio will break at least even this winter off there games maybe 3-4. If they cut the cost of those games by 25-50% everyone will make money. Gamer are more inclined to purchase 4 games for $120 instead of two

        • They Call Me Senpai

That’s a whole lot of words just to say nothing. You’re in over your head and the water will just continue to rise as long as you keep pretending like you know what you’re talking about.

Sony knows what they’re doing and that’s really all that matters at this juncture, so cease your attempts to pretend like you know better than them.

    • Not_true

Sony does in fact take a lot of creative risks with new IPs.

      • Dennis Crosby

Every console manufacture does. Those games just don’t sell well because even though gamers scream they want new games and IPs they don’t buy them. Look at games like Knack, Murder Soul Suspect. They were new IPs, brought something new to the table and i grantee they sold shitty and didn’t even break even on development cost. That’s another reason the price of game should be cut by at least 25%

  • heitiki

    gotta admire worldwide studios. <3

  • Jeff Maxwell

Ok I want a worldwide vote here ppl. Ive got PS4 staring me in the face cus I bought it whilst drunk thinking of buying infamous and KZ tomox ,need a poll……. 1 = Keep the console and buy the games… 2 = sell the console so the decision is upto you.. vote vuisuall my padawan leaners

    • Guest

      i don’t give a fuuuuuuuuuuuck

  • Porcu Peth

“and maybe one or two make all the money to cover the cost of the others titles”

That’s the key part here. I’m glad Sony is willing to do that. The really big games can cover the expenses of the more risky avenues, ensuring variety for everyone.

  • TheK5A

we need variety of games please >.> good ones ya i:m looking at you ** knack** and don’t spend 100mil on one game you can make 10 decent games with that much -.-

  • Synthetic Construct

To bad for all the money they spend on their own games and indie support, a squeaker with a PS4 will always only play Call of Dooty.

    • CervantesPR

      amen brother FUC* yearly franchises

  • JoJo_718

This is one of the reasons I fully support Sony’s first party titles, they have a lot of variety and even though many of their titles aren’t as successful as they should be (Puppeteer and Tearaway, you’ll never be forgotten), it doesn’t stops them from making more.

  • tubers

So what titles are those? I’m sure a lot of ND titles are a given..

    Recent ND games
    KZ
    Infamous
    ?

  • PlayMatt

    Sly Cooper and Puppeteer

  • Michael W

I always suspected not a lot of their games to make a large profit, but dam I thought they at least broke even or better. PS might not be backed into a corner with Indie games, but I can not see them taking a lot of risk on new AAA IP’s this generation.
Hope they keep making good games, can’t let those nice people working for Sony get layed off.

  • Carl

Thanks Sony for all the different experiences you have brought to Playstation. Games like Tearaway, Journey, Unfinished Swan, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian (hopefully… :)), Sly Cooper, Puppeteer, and so on, exist nowhere else. Thanks for not being just a Halo or Mario-only house.

  • Human@Play

I love and appreciate his honesty. Sure it may be a PR move to calm the masses but it helps put things in perspective for us as consumers. These guys are in the business of making money off our happiness and that makes them happy so I guess we all win when things go well.

  • PachterStation

It’s been a known fact for years that most games flop (rumour has it, 7 out of 10 games flop at retail). It’s a mix of cost and having the time to play bucket loads of games. The average guy in the street (most gamers), can’t afford to pay up to £60 for games, then are expected to shell out on DLC. Pricing has always been a MAJOR issue in gaming. There’s no reason whatsoever why all new releases are priced between £40 and £50, because they all cost a different amount of money to develop and publish (to name a few things). £20 games is something that’d be very popular, rather than wait years until games are released as budget games (a crap idea if you ask me). But Sony does churn out a lot of crap to average games, so I suppose 4 out of 10 games flopping, I suppose there’s some truth in it. Add games from Microsoft and Nintendo, plus other developers/publishers, it’s no wonder most games end up in the bargain bin.

  • Russell Gorall

I’d rather have media playback on my PS4 than a hundred dollar Android titles.

  • Why So Serious?

Without a doubt Sony has always kept their talented studios running even if their IP’s didn’t sell a gajillion copies. #SCE Life

  • Jimmy DoneGood

Sony is a failure of a company. Bring so much shame.
